Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) twin systems will be a fundamental enabler of zero-touch network and service management (ZSM) for sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. A reliable XAI twin system for ZSM requires two composites: an extreme analytical ability for discretizing the physical behavior of the Internet of Everything (IoE) and rigorous methods for characterizing the reasoning of such behavior. In this paper, a novel neuro-symbolic explainable artificial intelligence twin framework is proposed to enable trustworthy ZSM for a wireless IoE. The physical space of the XAI twin executes a neural-network driven multivariate regression to capture the time-dependent wireless IoE environment while determining unconscious decisions of IoE service aggregation. Subsequently, the virtual space of the XAI twin constructs a directed acyclic graph (DAG)-based Bayesian network that can infer a symbolic reasoning score over unconscious decisions through a first-order probabilistic language model. Furthermore, a Bayesian multi-arm bandits-based learning problem is proposed for reducing the gap between the expected explained score and current obtained score of the proposed neuro-symbolic XAI twin. To address the challenges of extensible, modular, and stateless management functions in ZSM, the proposed neuro-symbolic XAI twin framework consists of two learning systems: 1) implicit learner that acts as an unconscious learner in physical space, and 2) explicit leaner that can exploit symbolic reasoning based on implicit learner decisions and prior evidence. Experimental results show that the proposed neuro-symbolic XAI twin can achieve around 96.26% accuracy while guaranteeing from 18% to 44% more trust score in terms of reasoning and closed-loop automation. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Optimizing control strategies for monkeypox through mathematical modeling

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease similar to smallpox, has emerged as a major global health concern following the COVID-19 pandemic. This study presents a novel mathematical model aimed at analyzing various epidemiological factors, particularly the less-explored transmission from humans to monkeys, where both species act as carriers. Our approach integrates comprehensive awareness campaigns, strict security measures, and targeted health interventions to limit transmission between hosts, with the goal of reducing human infections and eliminating the virus among animal populations. The model utilizes the continuous-time Pontryagin maximum principle to determine and apply optimal control strategies, with iterative simulations conducted in Matlab. Our results, derived from these simulations, show that implementing all proposed preventative strategies—such as public awareness efforts, isolation of infected monkeys, and vaccination—simultaneously is the most effective method to control the virus's spread. We observed a significant reduction in both human and animal infections when these strategies were combined. The study's conclusions provide important insights into the transmission dynamics of monkeypox, highlighting the critical role of multifaceted intervention strategies in controlling outbreaks. These findings are expected to support more effective public health management and contribute to the global effort to contain and ultimately eradicate monkeypox. © 2024 The Authors

The present study explores a simulation model combining system dynamics and discrete-event simulation for an electric vehicle charging system. For the representation of the charging demand the model employs data from an actual facility for vehicle charging. While being connected to the electrical grid, the system is augmented by a solar photovoltaic installation and stationary battery energy storage. Multiple simulation runs were performed to analyze the considered energy system over a 1-year period and compare relevant output parameters for different system configurations and system locations. Results show that a solar photovoltaic installation can be effectively integrated. For the degree of self-sufficiency, high values of 87% can be achieved with combined solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems.

Lower limb exoskeletons serve multiple purposes, like supporting and augmenting movement. Biomechanical models are practical tools to understand human movement, and motor control. This review explores the applications of biomechanical gait models in the development of lower-limb exoskeletons. Biomechanical models can be broadly categorized as conceptual and detailed models. Biomechanical models can be used for the design, control, and assessment of exoskeletons. Also, these models can be used to estimate unmeasurable or hard-to-measure variables, which is also useful within the aforementioned applications. The analysis of applications and research areas aims to inspire further advancements in this field and contribute to the development of more effective exoskeletons. We highlight validating simulation studies, improving the accuracy and fidelity of biomechanical models, and benefiting from exoskeletons to enhance or validate biomechanical models as future research areas related to biomechanical models. We also emphasize the exploration of model-based design and control approaches for exoskeletons targeting pathological gait, and utilizing biomechanical models for diverse design objectives of exoskeletons. Also, increasing the availability of open-source resources accelerates exoskeleton and biomechanical model advancement. Our review reveals existing needs and cracks new perspectives for the development of more usable and human-compatible exoskeletons based on biomechanical models. © 2023, CC BY.

The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as renewable energy sources, generators, consumers, and prosumers in the smart grid infrastructure, poses significant cybersecurity and trust challenges to the grid controller. Consequently, it is crucial to identify adversarial tactics and measure the strength of the attacker’s DER. To enable a trustworthy smart grid controller, this work investigates a trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) mechanism for proactive identification and explanation of the cyber risk caused by the control/status message of DERs. Thus, proposing and developing a trustworthy AI framework to facilitate the deployment of any AI algorithms for detecting potential cyber threats and analyzing root causes based on Shapley value interpretation while dynamically quantifying the risk of an attack based on Ward’s minimum variance formula. The experiment with a state-of-the-art dataset establishes the proposed framework as a trustworthy AI by fulfilling the capabilities of reliability, fairness, explainability, transparency, reproducibility, and accountability. Characterizing Zagreb Index Bounds in Trees with Specified Metric Dimension

Consider a simple graph G = (V, E), where V are the vertices and E are the edges. The first Zagreb index, M1(G) = Pv∈V ψG(v)2. The second Zagreb index, M2(G) = Puv∈E ψG(u)ψG(v). The metric dimension of a graph refers to the smallest subset of vertices in a resolving set such that the distances from these vertices to all others in the graph uniquely identify each vertex. In this paper, we characterize bounds for the Zagreb indices of trees, based on the order of the tree and its metric dimension. Furthermore, we identify the trees that achieve these extremal bounds, offering valuable insights into how the metric dimension influences the behavior of the Zagreb indices in tree structures. © 2024, CC BY.

Extremal Values of the Atom-Bond Connectivity Index for Trees with Given Roman Domination Numbers

Consider that G = (X, Y) is a simple, connected graph with X as the vertex set and Y as the edge set. The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index is a novel topological index that Estrada introduced in Estrada et al. (1998). It is defined as ABC(G) = xy∈XY (G)s ζx +ζxζζyy− 2 where ζx and ζx represent the degrees of the vertices x and y, respectively. In this work, we explore the behavior of the ABC index for tree graphs. We establish both lower and upper bounds for the ABC index, expressed in terms of the graph’s order and its Roman domination number. Additionally, we characterize the tree structures that correspond to these extremal values, offering a deeper understanding of how the Roman domination number (RDN) influences the ABC index in tree graphs. © 2024, CC BY.

Well-posedness analysis of the Cahn-Hilliard-Biot model

We investigate the well-posedness of the recently proposed Cahn-Hilliard-Biot model. The model is a three-way coupled PDE of elliptic-parabolic nature, with several nonlinearities and the fourth order term known to the Cahn-Hilliard system. We show existence of weak solutions to the variational form of the equations and uniqueness under certain conditions of the material parameters and secondary consolidation, adding regularizing effects. Existence is shown by discretizing in space and applying ODE-theory (the Peano-Cauchy theorem) to prove existence of the discrete system, followed by compactness arguments to retain solutions of the continuous system. In addition, the continuous dependence of solutions on the data is established, in particular implying uniqueness. Both results build strongly on the inherent gradient flow structure of the model. In smart and intelligent health care, smartphone sensor-based automatic recognition of human activities has evolved as an emerging field of research. In many application domains, deep learning (DL) strategies are more effective than conventional machine learning (ML) models, and human activity recognition (HAR) is no exception. In this paper, we propose a novel framework (CAEL-HAR), that combines CNN, Autoencoder and LSTM architectures for efficient smartphone-based HAR operation. There is a natural synergy between the modeling abilities of LSTMs, autoencoders, and CNNs. While AEs are used for dimensionality reduction and CNNs are the best at automating feature extraction, LSTMs excel at modeling time series. Taking advantage of their complementarity, the proposed methodology combines CNNs, AEs, and LSTMs into a single architecture. We evaluated the proposed architecture using the UCI, WISDM public benchmark datasets. The simulation and experimental results certify the merits of the proposed method and indicate that it outperforms computing time, F1-score, precision, accuracy, and recall in comparison to the current state-of-the-art methods.

This position paper summarizes the inputs of a group of experts from academia and industry presenting their view on chances and challenges of using ChatGPT within modeling and simulation education. The experts also address the need to evaluate continuous education as well as education of faculty members to address scholastic challenges and opportunities while meeting the expectation of industry. Generally, the use of ChatGPT is encouraged, but it needs to be embedded into an updated curriculum with more emphasis on validity constraints, systems thinking, and ethics.
