Encoding and decoding models are widely used in systems, cognitive, and computational neuroscience to make sense of brain-activity data. However, the interpretation of their results requires care. Decoding models can help reveal whether particular information is present in a brain region in a format the decoder can exploit. Encoding models make comprehensive predictions about representational spaces. In the context of sensory experiments, where stimuli are experimentally controlled, encoding models enable us to test and compare brain-computational theories. Encoding and decoding models typically include fitted linear-model components. Sometimes the weights of the fitted linear combinations are interpreted as reflecting, in an encoding model, the contribution of different sensory features to the representation or, in a decoding model, the contribution of different measured brain responses to a decoded feature. Such interpretations can be problematic when the predictor variables or their noise components are correlated and when priors (or penalties) are used to regularize the fit. Encoding and decoding models are evaluated in terms of their generalization performance. The correct interpretation depends on the level of generalization a model achieves (e.g. to new response measurements for the same stimuli, to new stimuli from the same population, or to stimuli from a different population). Significant decoding or encoding performance of a single model (at whatever level of generality) does not provide strong constraints for theory. Many models must be tested and inferentially compared for analyses to drive theoretical progress. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

An ad hoc network consisting of vehicles has emerged as an interesting but challenging domain where a lot of new application may find their place. Though research in this field is on since last two decades, large-scale practical implementation still require some time. When it comes to building a successful public bike share such as the NYC CitiBike system, there are many important questions to answer. There is no shortage of work being done on finding the most efficient way to redistribute bikes to stations. Equally important to how to distribute bikes is the question of when to redistribute bikes. Redistribute too infrequently and customers become frustrated, resulting in decreased revenue. Redistribute too frequently and the cost of redistribution becomes prohibitively high. In this piece of research, we attempt to find the optimal time to call for the redistribution of bikes to minimize cost and retain maximum membership.

During the development of the ComFLOW simulation method many challenges have to be tackled concerning the flow modelling and the numerical solution algorithm. Examples here of are wave propagation, absorbing boundary conditions, fluid-solid body interaction, turbulence modeling and numerical efficiency. Some of these challenges will be discussed in the paper, in particular the design of absorbing boundary conditions and the numerical coupling for fluid-solid body interaction. As a demonstration of the progress made, a number of simulation results for engineering applications from the offshore industry will be presented: a wave-making oscillating buoy, a free-fall life boat dropping into wavy water, and wave impact against a semi-submersible offshore platform. For those applications, MARIN has carried out several validation experiments.

The present paper follows up on Vázquez-Abad (2013), where we applied the ghost simulation model to a public transportation problem. The ghost simulation model replaces faster point processes (passenger arrivals) with a “fluid” model while retaining a discrete event simulation for the rest of the processes (bus dynamics). This is not an approximation, but an exact conditional expectation when the fast process is Poisson. It can be interpreted as a Filtered Monte Carlo method for fast simulation. In the current paper we develop the required theory to implement a mixed optimization procedure to find the optimal fleet size under a stationary probability constraint. It is a hybrid optimization because for each fleet size, the optimal headway is real-valued, while the fleet size is integer-valued. We exploit the structure of the problem to implement a stopped target tracking method combined with stochastic binary search.

Public bicycle sharing services are becoming popular over the past decade. The behavior of using public bicycle system(PBS) produces numerous hire records involving citizens' movement. This paper presents a visual analytics system-Touching PBSData, to help both traffic administrators and ordinary citizens visually explore and understand PBS data on multi-touch devices. Tasks and design principles are put forward firstly. Four views are designed to show different aspects of the dataset, including the geographical distribution, the spatio-temporal pattern and personal relevant information. In order to enhance the flexibility and usability of system, the organization mode of views and rich user interaction suitable for multi-touch device are further studied. By adopting real PBS dataset, the results of case studies certify that our method is able to help analyzers to find stations' main function and citizens' travel habits. Moreover, the feedback from the participants with various backgrounds is very affirmative through the user study.

Towards Realistic Face Photo-Sketch Synthesis via Composition-Aided GANs

Face photo-sketch synthesis aims at generating a facial sketch/photo conditioned on a given photo/sketch. It is of wide applications including digital entertainment and law enforcement. Precisely depicting face photos/sketches remains challenging due to the restrictions on structural realism and textural consistency. While existing methods achieve compelling results, they mostly yield blurred effects and great deformation over various facial components, leading to the unrealistic feeling of synthesized images. To tackle this challenge, in this work, we propose to use the facial composition information to help the synthesis of face sketch/photo. Specially, we propose a novel composition-aided generative adversarial network (CA-GAN) for face photo-sketch synthesis. In CA-GAN, we utilize paired inputs including a face photo/sketch and the corresponding pixel-wise face labels for generating a sketch/photo. In addition, to focus training on hard-generated components and delicate facial structures, we propose a compositional reconstruction loss. Finally, we use stacked CA-GANs (SCA-GAN) to further rectify defects and add compelling details. Experimental results show that our method is capable of generating both visually comfortable and identity-preserving face sketches/photos over a wide range of challenging data. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art quality, reducing best previous Fréchet Inception distance (FID) by a large margin. In this paper, we propose a general framework for constructing IGA-suitable planar B-spline parameterizations from given complex CAD boundaries consisting of a set of B-spline curves. Instead of forming the computational domain by a simple boundary, planar domains with high genus and more complex boundary curves are considered. Firstly, some pre-processing operations including Bézier extraction and subdivision are performed on each boundary curve in order to generate a high-quality planar parameterization;then a robust planar domain partition framework is proposed to construct high-quality patch-meshing results with few singularities from the discrete boundary formed by connecting the end points of the resulting boundary segments. After the topology information generation of quadrilateral decomposition, the optimal placement of interior Bézier curves corresponding to the interior edges of the quadrangulation is constructed by a global optimization method to achieve a patch-partition with high quality. Finally, after the imposition of C1/G1-continuity constraints on the interface of neighboring Bézier patches with respect to each quad in the quadrangulation, the high-quality Bézier patch parameterization is obtained by a C1constrained local optimization method to achieve uniform and orthogonal iso-parametric structures while keeping the continuity conditions between patches. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by several examples which are compared to results obtained by the skeleton-based parameterization approach. Complex system-level simulation can produce large amounts of data, of which only portions may be of interest. When experimenting with hybrid prototypes, consisting of physical and simulated components, data logs are generated and inspected in real-time. Storing full data logs would not only require much disk space, it would also require much effort to find special events and related system actions afterwards. Targeted on-line data extraction helps to instantly provide the data of interest. We present SystemXtract, a powerful specification language and tool for on-line data extraction, supporting origin-, value- and dynamic phase-based constrains on the data. The main contribution of this paper is to show how the language can be mapped to a graph-based processing architecture for executing data extraction as specified. Experiments show that the tool-induced overhead in computation time is insignificant and that the realtime execution of the hybrid prototype is not compromised, while the output is reduced to the interesting data.
