In recent years, generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of large language models (LLM) have sparked the interest of society at large. The perceived capabilities of such systems have reignited discussions concerning the actual or potential threats posed by AI. According to Daniel Dennett, these systems make possible the creation of counterfeit people, who can pass as real in digital environments like social media. Dennett claims that by undermining trust in relationships, counterfeit people pose a threat to democracy and human freedom. While the idea of counterfeit people is worrisome in the context of digital manipulation, we claim that human digital twins have the potential to facilitate human rights violations that may pose even greater challenges. High-fidelity human digital twins necessitate encroaching into features that constitute a human's personhood, such as physical aspects and mental contents. In view of that, their creation raises pressing issues of consent and violations of privacy rights. As a result, because rights to privacy are rights of persons, such violations will simultaneously be human rights violations. Even with consent to use an individual's data, human digital twins may still cause issues of personhood. The rapid adoption of technologies that facilitate counterfeit people and human digital twins demands that ethical issues not be treated as aside concerns, but at the forefront of technology development. © 2023 IEEE.

This research presents modeling techniques of a stabilized remote controlled weapon system on the naval ship using multi-physics simulation. Multibody model, aero-hydro force interaction, and control interface are incorporated with each other. In order to verify the stabilization of orientation of remote controlled weapon system, the results from the dynamic model incorporated with MATLAB/Simulink are compared with the results from actual 6-DOF motion simulator. A shock absorber of the gun is essential of reducing the fire shock and dynamic model of shock absorber is characterized by the stiffness and damping constants. In order to obtain the actual damping and stiffness constants, a vibration experiment for the shock absorber of the gun is performed. In order to make the dynamic model of a naval ship enable to float on the sea, aero-hydro force elements are used. Also a wave force modeling technique is proposed in order to simulate wave motions in the sea. Copyright (c) 2010 by JSME.

The U.S. Coast Guard commissioned an evaluation of the appropriateness of adjusting the current limits of liability for oil spills from transportation-related onshore facilities, based on the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. Extensive data collection and analysis revealed that the type and quality of the data needed to support recommendations for setting limits of liability for oil spills from specific categories of facilities were either not available or not reliable. Therefore, no recommendation can be made regarding a change in the limits of liability. Further, the lack of accessible data cripples decision making in the entire subject of oil spills. Recommendations are made regarding the data acquisition process and the systems needed to support it.

Network simulation has gathered enormous interest lately as it is seen as the new approach to deal with complexity. The growth of social networks is widely known, and its scale and complexity define them as complex systems either for representation or analysis. Networks mean connection between individuals, organizations, etc. Complexity is inherent to this concept and, for its representation and analysis;we need a confident and precise methodology. Here is where simulation methods and techniques play a major role. Network topology and the dynamic behavior of nodes, their constant change, the influence that individual network components have, the weight assignment according to influence, dynamic changes of components, and the spreading and diffusion of information deserve a careful representation. simulation has become the necessary tool for representation and prediction of complex systems. It can provide with the means for covering all levels, general or strategic, to specific or operational, In this paper, we take a glance of some types of networks, their definition, use and structure. We analyze different types of simulations and ways we can represent these complex networks. We present a case study based on a University Enrollment Model and a hybrid simulation approach to deal with it.

Commonplace objects are being redesigned with digital functionality. Near invisible networks of radio frequency identification tags (RFID) are being deployed on almost every type of consumer product, and the "Ambient intelligence" promises to form a global network of physical objects as ubiquitous as the worldwide web itself. This diverse global network, "the internet of things" (IoT), provides digital connectivity on top of existing infrastructure and items. Nascent "smart object" developments like the presented "UCF Smart Mailbox," not only reformulate our relationship with the objects themselves, but they can also support social relationships that contribute to the sustainability of the society. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

A method is proposed to whiten 1-f-type background noise in electroencephalogram data by a nonlinear spectral transformation from the frequency domain to a newly-defined ∝-pitch domain. Based on the α-pitch spectra of steady-state visual evoked potentials, an algorithm called octave-averaged spectral rectification is applied which simultaneously attenuates 1-f noise while enhancing resonance peaks. This has important potential benefits for gamma-band brain-computer interfaces.

Promoting integrative medicine by computerization of traditional Chinese medicine for scientific research and clinical practice: The SuiteTCM Project

BACKGROUND： Chinese and contemporary Western medical practices evolved on different cultures and historical contexts and, therefore, their medical knowledge represents this cultural divergence. Computerization of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） is being used to promote the integrative medicine to manage, process and integrate the knowledge related to TCM anatomy, physiology, semiology, pathophysiology, and therapy. METHODS： We proposed the development of the SuiteTCM software, a collection of integrated computational models mainly derived from epidemiology and statistical sciences for computerization of Chinese medicine scientific research and clinical practice in all levels of prevention. The software includes components for data management （DataTCM）, simulation of cases （SimTCM）, analyses and validation of datasets （SciTCM）, clinical examination and pattern differentiation （DiagTCM, TongueTCM, and PulseTCM）, intervention selection （AcuTCM, HerbsTCM, and DietTCM）, management of medical records （ProntTCM）, epidemiologic investigation of sampled data （ResearchTCM）, and medical education, training, and assessment （StudentTCM）. DISCUSSION： The SuiteTCM project is expected to contribute to the ongoing development of integrative medicine and the applicability of TCM in worldwide scientific research and health care. The SuiteTCM 1.0 runs on Windows XP or later and is freely available for download as an executable application.

Virtual Humans (VHs) have been employed in multidisciplinary fields to advance interpersonal skills critical to many professional, including law enforcement agents, military personnel, managers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Law enforcement agencies in particular have faced a growing need to develop human to human interpersonal training to increase interviewing and interrogation skills. In this paper, we present a prototype VE that has been developed to provide law enforcement agents with effective interview and interrogation training and experiential learning. The virtual training environment will need to be tested and formally evaluated to verify the benefits compared to live exercises and traditional training techniques. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

This research describes the development of a real-time simulator of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) which is used to verify the driving controller of UGV in real-time simulation environment. The real-time simulator consists of real-time UGV dynamic model, driving controller, human interface for remote operation, and virtual environment model. Baseline software of the simulator was modeled using MATLAB/Simulink and converted using RT-LAB into real-time application software that can run in target computers. Real time dynamics of the UGV was model using Dymola which in turn generates Simulink S-function for the dynamic model. The driving control algorithm of UGV embedded in control board was first written using Simulink and then automatically translated into C code by Real Time Workshop (RTW) software. MultiGen Creator was used to generate 3D object and virtual environment and Vega Prime was used to render graphic objects and give special visualization effects. After the integration of real-time simulator components, hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) was performed and verified the driving controller of UGV. This paper introduces a developed hybrid power modeling and simulation tool for series hybrid electric military combat vehicles. A simulation tool for determining optimal hybrid power in hybrid components such as motor, engine, generator, and storages and for evaluating designed driving control strategy and energy management strategy is essential in designing a hybrid system. The developed tool is based on the MATLAB/Simulink with simple GUI interface. It supports various series hybrid structures of military vehicles, driving cycles, and driving control strategies. It supports two types of analysis methods: a forward facing method and a backward facing method. In this research, in order to determine the motor's power and spec, the developed tool is incorporated with the commercial multibody dynamics software, VirtualLab/Motion developed by LMS International. The objectives of the iterative works between design of optimal hybrid power systems and optimal driving control strategy include reducing the overall fuel consumption and optimizing the mobility performance to cost, mass and volume space claims of the vehicles' power systems, and enabling those vehicles with enhanced electrical power generation and storage capabilities useful for field operations, too. A 20ton 8x8 series hybrid electric vehicle is considered as design example. This paper shows the results of determined hybrid components' power and shows the SOC variation and fuel efficiency for various driving strategies. © Copyright 2011 IEEE - All Rights Reserved.
