The explosive growth in cloud-based services, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence related services provisioning leads to the rapid growth of construction of large scale Internet data centers (IDCs). Modern IDCs are equipped with various sensors to monitor its healthy operation and maintenance states, such as temperature, thermal distribution, air flow, etc. However, fine-grained, single-node level and even mainboard level monitoring including server resource consumption and power consumption is still needed for more progressive resource multiplexing and job scheduling in IDCs. In this paper, we propose an edge computing platform for intelligent Internet data center operational monitoring, which integrates wireless sensors and on-board built-in sensors to sense and collect the data of data center operation and maintenance. The edge computing based solution reduces the latency for data transportation to central clouds and reduces the amount of data and enhances the real time resource capping decisions in data centers. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2019.

Bilinear convolutional neural networks (BCNN) model, the state-of-the-art in fine-grained image recognition, fails in distinguishing the categories with subtle visual differences. We design a novel BCNN model guided by user click data (C-BCNN) to improve the performance via capturing both the visual and semantical content in images. Specially, to deal with the heavy noise in large-scale click data, we propose a weakly supervised learning approach to learn the C-BCNN, namely W-C-BCNN. It can automatically weight the training images based on their reliability. Extensive experiments are conducted on the public Clickture-Dog dataset. It shows that: (1) integrating CNN with click feature largely improves the performance; (2) both the click data and visual consistency can help to model image reliability. Moreover, the method can be easily customized to medical image recognition. Our model performs much better than conventional BCNN models on both the Clickture-Dog and medical image dataset.

Public bicycle sharing services are becoming popular over the past decade. The behavior of using public bicycle system(PBS) produces numerous hire records involving citizens' movement. This paper presents a visual analytics system-Touching PBSData, to help both traffic administrators and ordinary citizens visually explore and understand PBS data on multi-touch devices. Tasks and design principles are put forward firstly. Four views are designed to show different aspects of the dataset, including the geographical distribution, the spatio-temporal pattern and personal relevant information. In order to enhance the flexibility and usability of system, the organization mode of views and rich user interaction suitable for multi-touch device are further studied. By adopting real PBS dataset, the results of case studies certify that our method is able to help analyzers to find stations' main function and citizens' travel habits. Moreover, the feedback from the participants with various backgrounds is very affirmative through the user study.

Bayesian Optimization (BO) is a powerful method for tackling expensive blackbox optimization problems. As a sequential model-based optimization strategy, BO iteratively explores promising solutions until a predetermined budget, either iterations or time, is exhausted. The decision on when to terminate BO significantly influences both the quality of solutions and its computational efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple, yet theoretically grounded, two-step method for automatically terminating BO. Our core concept is to proactively identify if the search is within a convex region by examining previously observed samples. BO is halted once the local regret within this convex region falls below a predetermined threshold. To enhance numerical stability, we propose an approximation method for calculating the termination indicator by solving a bilevel optimization problem. We conduct extensive empirical studies on diverse benchmark problems, including synthetic functions, reinforcement learning, and hyperparameter optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method saves up to ≈ 80% computational budget yet is with an order of magnitude smaller performance degradation, comparing against the other peer methods. In addition, our proposed termination method is robust in terms of the setting of its termination criterion.

Backup control barrier function (Backup CBF) is a tractable formulation that ensure the feasibility of CBF-based quadratic programming (QP) problems through implicitly defined control invariant set. Backup CBF is based on two fundamental ingredients: a known backup set and a fixed backup policy, and the implicitly defined control invariant set is evaluated through forward integration by backup policy in a finite horizon online. However, there is a lack of systematic methods for providing the backup set and backup policy for a system with input constraints, making it difficult to synthesize a backup CBF. In this paper, we propose a method for second-order systems to obtain backup policy and backup set practically, rather than empirical choice, by constructing a more conservative explicit CBF-QP with auxiliary velocity constraints integrated. The proposed method warms up a backup CBF by an explicit conservative CBF-QP under mild assumptions, while without excessive conservatism, allowing the tasks of safety and feasibility to be guaranteed theoretically. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in simulation. © 2024 IEEE.

simulation-based digital twins must provide accurate, robust and reliable digital representations of their physical counterparts. Quantifying the uncertainty in their predictions plays, therefore, a key role in making better-informed decisions that impact the actual system. The update of the simulation model based on data must be then carefully implemented. When applied to complex structures such as bridges, discrepancies between the computational model and the real system appear as model bias, which hinders the trustworthiness of the digital twin and increases its uncertainty. Classical Bayesian updating approaches aiming to infer the model parameters often fail at compensating for such model bias, leading to overconfident and unreliable predictions. In this paper, two alternative model bias identification approaches are evaluated in the context of their applicability to digital twins of bridges. A modularized version of Kennedy and O’Hagan’s approach and another one based on Orthogonal Gaussian Processes are compared with the classical Bayesian inference framework in a set of representative benchmarks. Additionally, two novel extensions are proposed for such models: the inclusion of noise-aware kernels and the introduction of additional variables not present in the computational model through the bias term. The integration of such approaches in the digital twin corrects the predictions, quantifies their uncertainty, estimates noise from unknown physical sources of error and provides further insight into the system by including additional pre-existing information without modifying the computational model. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Block level storage system has been widely used as it can provide users raw block device. On the basis of Orthrus system, this paper designs and implements a multiple volume servers block level storage system based on load-balanced strategy-Orthrus Plus. This system uses the dynamic load-balanced strategy based on genetic algorithm strategy to load balance the volume servers clusters and proposes an iSCSI pause and resume method to solve the breakpoint retransmission problem during load-balancing. At last, we design a hierarchical management mechanism based on volume life cycle at storage. Experiments show that the load balancing capability in Orthrus Plus is more accurate and efficient under the situation of larger amount of data, and the hierarchical storage strategy also increases the I/O throughout capacity. © 2013 SERSC.

The National Academies' 2007 report "Rising Above the Gathering Storm": Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future," was a response to a bipartisan request by Congress. It proposes a coordinated set of policy actions consisting of four recommendations and twenty specific actions to "enhance the science and technology (S&T) enterprise so that the United States can successfully compete, prosper, and be secure in the global community of the 21st century." Early chapters of the report describe the authors' perceptions of the structure and behavior of the S&T eco-system that led to the report's recommended set of policy actions. The S&T eco-system structure in the report includes global forces that affect U.S. employment;U.S. K-12 education, higher education, corporate research, and federal funding for physical sciences and engineering research;U.S. reactions to 9/11 including visa policies, export controls, and sensitive but unclassified information;as well as underlying U.S. attitudes that influence the behavior of these structures. This report has become the nucleation point for the broad debate on the future of US prosperity and its international policy ramifications. Formal simulation of the logic within the report can test the validity and efficacy of proposed measures. This paper utilizes the report to illustrate a method for assessing 1) the reality of the hypothesized problem, 2) proposed solutions, and 3) the most promising areas of future discourse. The conceptual model described herein attempts to simulate general tendency behaviors and is not intended to capture the complete science and technology ecosystem. Instead it is the authors' intent to describe the learning opportunity by first modeling the relevant "whole" system with a very broad brush, and then co-develop with other industry, academic, and government stakeholders, a causal structure which captures the relevant system in more detail. In this paper, a deep mixture algorithm is developed to support large-scale visual recognition (e.g., recognizing tens of thousands of object classes) by seamlessly combining a set of base deep CNNs (AlexNet) with diverse task spaces, e.g., such base deep CNNs (i.e., diverse experts) are trained to recognize different subsets of tens of thousands of object classes rather than the same set of object classes. Our experimental results have demonstrated that our deep mixture algorithm can achieve very competitive results on large-scale visual recognition.
