In recent years, tracking vehicle with overlapping and maneuvering disturbances has become a challenging task in visual tracking. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is proved to be effective in tracking vehicle under disturbances by probabilistically estimating the vehicle position. However the sampling based tracking algorithm is highly depending on the sampling efficiencies where adequate chain length is necessary to sustain the tracking accuracy. Therefore variance ratio (VR) based MCMC has been implemented in this study to adapt the chain length according to the disturbances encountered. Isomap manifold learning is further implemented to update the vehicle model and accurately track the vehicle with maneuvering disturbances. Multiple vehicle models with different viewing angles are represented by Isomap under low dimensional manifold. The suitable vehicle model will be selected according to the estimated vehicle position. Experimental results have shown that Isomap-VR-MCMC have better tracking performances compared to VR-MCMC with smaller RMSE value. © 2012 IEEE.

Nowadays, there is a must to operate the power system close to its security limit due to current economic growth and the difficulties to upgrade the existing grid infrastructure. With the sudden increment of demand, the voltage instability problem has become a main concern to the power system operator. Hence, methods for early warning of voltage instability are required to prevent the power system from a collapse. This paper describes the use of real-time voltage instability predictors for the load areas in the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) network based on measurement from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) placed at the boundary of the load center. The voltage instability predictor calculates the power margin and compares to the preset margin threshold. Finally, the stability of the system is based on the comparison between the margin and pre-set threshold.

Collaborative beamforming (CB) is introduced in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to improve the transmission power and the energy efficiency of the networks. Using a subset number of nodes from a network of sensors, they collectively transmit a common message with different proper weights to an intended location. Different geometrical location of the subset of nodes will produce different transmission gains. Due to erratic deployment of the sensor nodes in the networks, the assignment for the sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks is vital to achieve better array pattern synthesis. In this paper, a node selection method based on uniform circular array is presented. simulation and performance analysis are carried out to demonstrate the beam pattern performance of uniform circular in performing collaborative beamforming. © 2012 IEEE.

Wireless spectrum is considered a limited and valuable communications resource as it influences productivity, security and our daily lives. The usage of the wireless spectrum has been given much research focus due to its limited capacity. There is currently a large amount of white spaces and spectrum holes left unused. Therefore, researchers are motivated to invent methods to utilize the spectrum more efficiently and opportunistically. Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is a method which adapts its transmitting parameters according to the channel state and it is used in various modern wireless communications to maximize spectrum efficiency and minimize error rate. One of the driving strengths of AMC is the Signal-To-Noise Ratio (SNR) estimation and feedback channel for adaptation. Sudden time-varying channel degrading effects sometimes require the transmission link to react appropriately so it can minimize the Bit Error Rate (BER). Thus, the objective of this paper introduces an AMC scheme which utilizes a simple moments based SNR estimator and punctured convolutional coding for spectral and quality improvement for the wireless channel. © 2012 IEEE.

Obstetrics ultrasound scan has been a vital routine for a pregnant mother to get information on the foetus dating and growth. Foetus ultrasound image is normally not clear and contains unwanted noise. Furthermore, the displayed foetus scan on the monitor screen can be not in complete stationary because of the slight movement of the held ultrasound probe. Thus, a computerized method to do segmentation on the foetus image should be implemented. To obtain precise measurements, obstetrician needs to freeze the best possible scene throughout the scanning session. With the segmentation technique implemented, the point locations for measurement can be generated without the participation of the obstetrician. In this paper, the applied segmentation technique is variational level set algorithm. Based on the segmentation results, the level set contour evolved well on the ultrasound image although it is low in contrast and contains image noise.

Collaborative beamforming (CB) has been introduced in the context of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to enhance the communication range and energy efficiency of the networks. CB relies on a subset of nodes in the network which acts as a virtual antenna array to collectively transmit a common signal to an intended location. Due to random deployment of the sensor nodes in the networks, proper selection of participating nodes to perform distributed CB is vital to achieve better array pattern synthesis. Different topologies of the participating nodes will produce different impact on transmission gains. In this paper, a node selection method based on uniform circular array formation is presented. The analysis is carried out with the assumption that the sensor nodes are randomly distributed with uniform distribution. Statistical evaluation on the average beampattern is carried out to demonstrate the behavior and properties of the mainlobe, and sidelobe level (SLL) for the selected scheme.

The complexity and function of transportation are evolving following the advancements in technology. This phenomenon is correlated to the needs of transportation users and also the requirement to develop new and safer transportation which will ease the commuting process. Using communication technology, transportation systems gain an added advantage on top of its conventional purpose. The technology of communications and computing embedded into transportation branches into a field named Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). To enable such frameworks, the communication support infrastructure has to be well defined and planned systematically. The integration of communication into transportation systems and vehicles helps broadcast information to help the driver make informed decisions. Users of transportation can also benefit from the updated information regarding routes and options to travel. Besides that, the introduction of wireless sensors will help autonomous systems facilitate public transportation. This paper describes a framework to address the challenges in public transportation service in campus, more specifically, to improve the smoothness and reliability of service. The communication network can improve the overall efficiency and bring comfort to travelers.

Transportation has evolved to a topic which is highly regarded in multi aspects. Partly, the contribution to its increasing complexity and everlasting significance has some correlation to the continuous rising demands of public transportation. Transportation systems are now urged to break through the boundaries using communication technology. The integration of communication and computing in the realm of transportation is coined Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The reliability of transportation systems have yet to mature as there are still problems that require support or restructuring. The current new fleets of public transport lacks of proper communication assistance which could potentially identify traffic conditions instantly. The dynamic environments of transportation regions will always pose challenges to wireless communications. Accordingly, there is a need for reliable, uninterrupted and high speed communication systems for the application in ITS. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate a wireless communication protocol suitable for vehicular scenarios. The wireless communication scheme exhibits ad-hoc behavior and coupled with adaptive capabilities. Together, with multiple communication units, they are able to deliver reliable point-to-point wireless communication within a network. With good planning, the communication system can help with the improvements of the efficiency and safety public transportation systems.

Normalised cuts algorithm requires massive similarity measurement computation for image segmentation. Since a digital camera at present has the capability to produce high resolution image, it will be inevitably that resizing image into suitable resolution at which the algorithm can perform image segmentation with minimal burden. While retaining the important features in the images, natural images are likely to be restricted for resizing them into a particular smaller resolution. Dividing an image into equal size of regions (named as image cells) for the segmentation is proposed here to solve the problem of missing important features when the image resolution is overly reduced. Gradually, the locally segmented clusters from the image cells are taken for second stage segmentation to merge them up globally. In this paper, experimental results using the mentioned method are shown. Experiment shows that it is capable to produce reasonable segmented clusters based on the proposed approach.
