Lung cancer is the main cause of death in the world. It is diagnosed generally by analysing a tissue cluster formation called `nodule' inside the lung. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) plays an important role in medical field which helps radiologists to detect and localise lung nodule. The aim of this research is to develop an image segmentation algorithm for nodule detection in computed tomography (CT) image. Performance of the developed segmentation algorithm is analysed through testing on the lung CT image obtained from public online database, Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC). To segment the lung nodule, preprocessing techniques are applied on the CT image followed by segmentation approaches to segment the nodule inside the lung. In this research, median filter is applied to improve the quality and filter the background noise of the image. Segmentation technique which is level set method (LSM) is applied to segment the nodule. After that, feature extraction process is carried out to obtain the essential information of the segmented nodules for further analysis or classification purpose. Here, the features extracted including centroid, major and minor axis length and area of the nodule. Performance of the segmentation algorithms is analysed using 20 lung CT images from LIDC dataset. Lastly, classification step is done using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify the segmented nodule to different categories. From the analysis, LSM technique performs better in cases of bigger nodule compared to smaller size nodule. The result shows that the proposed segmentation method can effectively segment the lung nodule.

The metaheuristic genetic algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm which means that it will always evolve to get an optimum solution. Due to this intrinsic characteristic, the conventional genetic algorithm might be trapped at local optimum when dealing with a global optimization problem that consists of several maximum points. As such, this paper aims to explore the potential of improving the genetic algorithm by manipulating its operators. With different procedures in selection and replacement operators, the genetic algorithm is be able to compute more efficiently. This mechanism is introduced to prevent the proposed algorithm to be trapped at the local optimum point with shorter computation time. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is tested in optimizing a wireless sensor network (WSN) because the WSN will exhibit multiple peaks with different network configuration. The existence of multiple peaks will lead to additional difficulties for the conventional routing protocol algorithm in tracking the global optimum network configuration or known as global optima. The simulation results show the effect of proposed genetic algorithm with different combinations of operators.

This work aims to explore the potential to minimize traffic congestion using a non-deterministic algorithm. Conventionally, the deterministic algorithm such as fuzzy logic was proposed as the computational algorithm to compute the optimum traffic signal timing for minimizing vehicles in queue and travel delay. However, it is very difficult to define the suitable number of fuzzy rules that are able to cover the all possibilities of traffic flow changes since the natural traffic flow behavior is dynamic. Besides, the inherent deterministic behavior limits the algorithm to explore the solution space in searching for the optimum traffic solution. In other words, the deterministic algorithm will not provide other solution with the same input. Therefore, genetic algorithm, a non-deterministic algorithm, is proposed to optimize the traffic signalization. A benchmarked 3×3 grid traffic network is developed as the testbed to examine the robustness of the proposed GA. Each intersection is integrated with a GA based signal controller or known as agent to form a multi-agent system. Each agent has the autonomy in controlling their own traffic intersection and they will share their local traffic information to their downstream intersections. The performance of the proposed GA is compared with the conventional fuzzy logic. The simulation results show the proposed GA improves the performance about 6.6 % in minimizing vehicles in queue and travel delay as compared to the conventional fuzzy logic.

This paper presents a metaheuristic-based temperature controller for an exothermic batch process. Developing a suitable temperature controller for an exothermic process is a challenging task because large amount of heat is released rapidly during the process. The exothermic behavior will further increase the reaction rate and cause more heat to be liberated. As the result, the improper temperature control might cause the reaction becomes unstable and consequently poses safety concern to the plant personnel and equipment. The conventional non-metaheuristic-based controller, such as fuzzy logic requires empirical data or knowledge about the total amount heat released while developing its fuzzy rules and membership functions for precision control. However, the detailed kinetic model of the heat released is unable to be obtained since there are several unobservable parameters during the process, such as the energy held in the reactor and jacket walls. Therefore, particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is proposed as the controller to maintain the reactor temperature at the desired trajectory by manipulating the inlet jacket fluid temperature and flow rate. The simulation results show the proposed PSO produces better performances in terms of minimizing fluctuation in control actions and overshooting as compared with the conventional fuzzy logic controller.

Continuous increased of on-road vehicles has also increased the possibility of accidents, most o f it caused by human errors. Hence, a solution has been proposed, which is to make vehicles more intelligent through research on vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Currently, simulation on VANETs has been widely studied. It is known that networking and mobility component are required to fonn a VANET. In this paper, mobility component is focused and discussed. A few mobility simulators have been introduced with some citations of related works for each of the simulators. MATLAB and simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) are further used for VANET simulation respectively. At the same time, TraCMMatlab, an Application Programming Intel face (API) developed in MAIZAB that allows communication between any applications written in MATLAB and SUMO simulator is also discussed. © 2016 IEEE.

Flow in fractured porous media occurs in the earth’s subsurface, in biological tissues, and in man-made materials. Fractures have a dominating influence on flow processes, and the last decade has seen an extensive development of models and numerical methods that explicitly account for their presence. To support these developments, we present a portfolio of four benchmark cases for single-phase flow in three-dimensional fractured porous media. The cases are specifically designed to test the methods’ capabilities in handling various complexities common to the geometrical structures of fracture networks. Based on an open call for participation, results obtained with 17 numerical methods were collected. This paper presents the underlying mathematical model, an overview of the features of the participating numerical methods, and their performance in solving the benchmark cases. Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. Recently, surveillance on moving vehicles for traffic flow monitoring has emerging in rapid rate. A comprehensive traffic data, that is vehicle trajectory, is selected as reliable data for discovering the underlying pattern via trajectory mining. As the task of monitoring moving vehicles via vehicle trajectory dataset can be tedious, researchers are keen to provide solutions that reducing the tedious task performed by the traffic operators. One of the solutions is to group the vehicle trajectory data according to the shape of the patterns. This grouping task is called as clustering. Each of the clusters formed represents a pattern. In this paper, the analysis of the implemented clustering algorithm on the trajectory data with similarity function is presented. Discussion on the issues concerning the trajectory clustering is also presented. © 2016, UK simulation Society. All rights reserved.

Cell transmission model (CTM) is one of the most comprehensive, updatable and easy-to-implement models among the existing macroscopic traffic models that approximates the road conditions for immediate information uphold. For instance, it is believed that minimal interpretation from traffic modeling in crowd-sourced route navigation apps will support for user input information checking and verification based on the road conditions. This paper demonstrates the computation of discrete based hydrodynamic CTM in road disturbance and flow recovery to explain the credits and drawbacks of CTM through the model establishment in simulations. Different sample time attempted in the studies suggested a tradeoff between level of details and computational effort are also discussed in this paper.

The advancement of technology has always been driven to comprehend the need for the various aspects of life like productivity, efficiency and safety. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is introduced as a part of the global efforts and advanced application to fill the needs. It has been shown to be promising strategy as it could enhance the traffic efficiency and promote on-road traffic safety through the utilisation of both vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. This special kind of communication is known as Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) technology. Multihop ad hoc network paradigm is considered to be backbone for many VANET development. Besides, the researches on VANET are mostly inherited from the result of Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) related to multihop ad hoc transmission and routing protocol which have been modified and adjusted to acclimate to the feature of vehicular field. Due to rapid growth of VANET, IEEE standard committee (IEEE 802) has develop a standard defining functions and operation for VANET. This paper aims to accurately simulate the behaviour of VANET simulation with the key parameters of the standard developed by IEEE 802 committee. The performance of this standard is evaluated in the network simulation environment in Matlab with realistic vehicular mobility model.
