In externally prestressed structures, anchors and deviators are used to connect tendons to the main structure. Those reinforced concrete blocks are exposed to large stress concentration and in many cases need 3D non-linear computation to be assessed properly, especially when they are beyond the standard framework. This local stress computation remains a great challenge for externally prestressed bridge design or large span girders design and is often poorly evaluated. This paper presents the results of a nonlinear 3D analysis of an anchor block belonging to an 80 meters long externally prestressed box girder. This analysis has been done for an actual engineering study (Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris) to understand the concrete stress behaviour and cracking causes at the anchorage zone. Each reinforcing bar is modelled, plain concrete is described by the Rankine criterion, and finite elements are 10-nodes tetrahedrons. Then, a yield design computation is performed to assess the safety factor on the ultimate state loading. For the collapse load, an elastoplastic analysis is computed thanks to a static approach and a kinematic approach. This dual approach gives an error estimation in constitutive law. Eventually, stress flaws and rebars constrains are analysed in order to understand the general behaviour of the anchor. © 2022 IABSE Symposium Prague, 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures - Report. Background The Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (SRATI) in collaboration with the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) and the Society for simulation in Europe (SESAM) have identified a need for advanced airway management training aligned to international guidelines. The aims of this study are to describe the planning, development, conduction and implementation of a National Advanced Airway Management (NAAM) course in Romania; and, to evaluate the NAAM content, methodology, and achievement of learning objectives, as perceived by the residents. Methods The NAAM project followed a four-step approach: 1. Target needs analysis; 2. Train-the-Trainer (TTT); 3. Integration in residents’ training; 4. Evaluation by the participating residents. Between February 2023 and April 2024, 400 residents from five simulation centres attended the course, out of which 186 provided anonymous feedback on the course design and methodology, and reported pre- and post-course confidence scores. Results NAAM significantly improved residents’ self-perceived confidence in managing difficult airways (more than 1 point increase on a 5-point Likert scale, with Wilcoxon signed−rank test p < 0.001 for each self-assessed skill). Participants also reported high satisfaction scores with the eight skills stations and simulation sessions, with a median (inter-quartile range) of 5 (4–5) points for each session. Conclusion The NAAM programme has successfully enhanced the Romanian anaesthesiology training. It may serve as a model for implementing national SBET programmes in other European countries, addressing similar airway management and/or other gaps in anaesthesiology training. Hydrologists in developing countries face a major challenge due to the lack of ground data. This study evaluates the performance of the monthly Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) algorithm 3B43 V7 using 172 ground rainfall measurement stations (GRMS) over Morocco (1998–2018). The performance of the TRMM 3B43 V7 was assessed using four well-known metrics (KGE, R², PBIAS, and RSR). The evaluation was undertaken based on (1) a point-to-pixel scale, (2) sub-regions of Morocco, (3) climatic zones, and (4) different ranges of altitudes. Results indicate that the TRMM 3B43 V7 provides satisfactory attribution in most regions of Morocco, with an average R² higher than 0.54, except in the south areas, which have the lowest R² between 0.29 and 0.41. The best R² of 0.95 was observed in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. The other performance criteria (KGE: 0.93, RSR: 0.21, PBIAS: − 5.5) indicate that TRMM 3B43 V7 is consistent with in situ data but slightly underestimated. At the point-to-pixel scale, KGE and R² show that 61% and 52% of stations present satisfactory to good results, respectively. The PBIAS shows a large overestimation over most parts of Morocco, particularly the southern part. TRMM 3B43V7 performs better in the Mediterranean climate than in other climatic zones. TRMM 3B43 V7 harmonises GRMS slightly in low elevation zones, while average PBIAS show a global overestimation, increasing in high and low elevations. The results of this study confirm that TRMM 3B43 V7 provides a vital baseline tool to assist Moroccan Hydraulic Basin agencies. Prior to his current positions Dr. Chitre was a Principal Scientist in the Network Technology Division at COMSAT Laboratories. Dr. Chitre joined COMSAT Laboratories in 1980. He has made major contributions to the analysis and architecture of data communication ISDN and BISDN via satellite. Dr. Chitre directs and participates in the international and national standards activities in ISDN BISDN and data communication as they apply to satellite communication. He was Chairman of the Working Group on Protocols and Network Timing Function of the CCIR/CCITT Joint Ad Hoc Group on ISDN/Satellite Matters during 1990–1992. Currently he is the Chairman of the Working Group on New Technologies in the ITU Intersector Coordinating Group (ICG) on Satellite Matters. Dr. Chitre was a programme manager during 1990 and 1991 on a contract from INTELSAT on systems studies on satellite communications systems architectures for ISDN and broadband ISDN systems. Currently he is the technical manager of the DoD Contract on ATM via satellite demonstration and the programme manager for the INTELSAT contract on analysis and top-level specification of INTELSAT ISDN subnetworks and SDH compatible transport network. The role of satellite communications in networks that provide new services, such as frame relay and multimedia, is investigated. Both passive and active (on-board switching/processing) satellite systems are considered. Novel techniques are developed for each system to demonstrate, via detailed analysis and simulation, how the communications bandwidth agility of multipoint/broadcast satellite channels, and the on-board switching/processing, makes it feasible to provide these new services via hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks in a resource-efficient manner.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes. © 2023, CC BY.
