In order to ensure the optimal conditions for crops growing under greenhouse systems, it is usually essential to regulate the inside microclimate. In this paper, a new second-order fuzzy sliding-mode controller is implemented in real-time to control greenhouse system temperature. The obtained experimental results show a good operation of the whole system, where the proposed Fuzzy logic supervisor succeeds to provide fast and high performances. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an application of a pole placement technique related to the stability analysis for a linear constrained system. In this regard some of the main approaches that have been used in the last decades dealing with the pole placement will be engaged. Concepts and methods involved in this work include positive invariance as an efficient notion for the pole placement amelioration of a modern SISO system. The state feedback will enhance the stabily of the closed loop system under the notion of constrained control. For this aim, a greenhouse system, is engaged and a linear discrete time state space model, which fits properly the acquired data of the greenhouse, was identified by the mean of the subspace system identification (N4sid) algorithm. The obtained model will be used in order to develop and calculate the state feedback gain based on the so-called Sylvester algebric equation and one of the pole placement techniques algorithm to ameliorate the closedloop pole placement of the system with constraints on the control. © 2020 IEEE.

This study examines the automatization of irrigation tasks of solar photovoltaic water pumping systems (SPVWPS) in greenhouse applications. A prototype of an embedded control system has been developed for SPVWPS battery-coupled architectures. The new design aims at improving the safety of solar irrigation facility by avoiding the exhaustion of pumping resources (water and energy) while watering. The availabilities of pumping resources are introduced as new requisite inputs of a fuzzy logic-based control system (FLC) so that it can produce adequate and safe irrigation durations. The FLC design consists of two cascaded devices. The first device uses climate data to estimate durations for watering that satisfy crop needs. The second device uses actual resource levels to evaluate the pumping capacity of the SPVWPS regarding requested durations. Watering is performed whenever the pumping capacity of the system represents more than 25% of the total requirement. Test results from an experimental greenhouse prove the effectiveness of the decision-making mechanism that prevents scheduling unsuccessful watering tasks. © 2019 Chinese Automatic control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

Towards autonomous greenhouses solar-powered

Fuzzy logic controls have been used to develop intelligent control systems in greenhouses, leading to promote a comfortable microclimate for plant growth while saving energy and water resources. Solar energy is an effective solution to extend the use of these intelligent systems in isolated areas. In fact, this paper presents a practical solution based on the power-aware design for controlling the indoor environment of solar greenhouses. The system consists of feedback fuzzy logic controllers that log key field parameters using specific sensors and performs control actions for the environmental temperature, soil moisture, and relative humidity. With regard to the battery-coupled architecture of the solar system, the decision level is designed to consider the availability of operational resources before acting. Keeping in mind the constraint of low-cost, we propose a flexible design of an embedded system able to support remote management of the indoor environment key-parameters. The proposed control system was validated experimentally. The efficiency of the system was assessed by demonstrating significant energy and water savings as well as protection of solar system components from dry running issues

Technologies of irrigation systems are developed with a focus on intelligent water management, advanced features and remote control of solar photovoltaic watering systems (SPVWSs). The new generation of inexpensive microcontrollers comes with high level of computation capability and provides low-cost solutions. In this direction, this paper presents a new multithreading design and implementation of an embedded irrigation system running on solar power. The design combines the advanced concepts of concurrency programming, namely multithreading and virtual timers, with the embedded computing resources of smart devices. According to the design and test results through an experimental greenhouse, this device provides an accuracy real-time management of all activities of the SPVWS with eventually a low power consumption. © 2018 IEEE.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.
