Click-through rate (CTR) prediction, whose purpose is to predict the probability of a user clicking on an item, plays a pivotal role in recommender systems. Capturing users’ accurate preferences from their historical interactions (e.g., clicks) is an essential step for handling this task and has aroused wide concern in both academia and industry. However, most of the previous methods focus on the users with abundant clicks and ill-serve the users who rarely click or purchase items. Though the ratio of these long-tailed users may be small on popular platforms, such as Amazon and Taobao, they are the majority on the newborn e-commerce company like Lazada. To extract the interests of long-tailed users, several works attempt to integrate the side information, such as demographic features. Nevertheless, these features are usually not available and may even lead to privacy concerns. Therefore, how to utilize the noisy and limited clicks becomes the key *** this paper, we propose a novel model called Hierarchical Interest Modeling (HIM). It hierarchically utilizes long-tailed users’ limited behaviors and captures their preferences from both personalized and group-wise perspectives. HIM consists of two main components, including User Behavior Pyramid (UBP) and User Behavior Clustering (UBC). The UBP module utilizes additional negative feedback to reduce the noises in positive feedback, thus obtaining reliable user personalized representations. Then, the UBC module automatically discovers latent user groups with self-supervised reconstruction loss and learns another interest representation for each user in a group-wise aspect. Extensive experiments on both public and industrial datasets verify the superiority of HIM compared with the state-of-the-art baselines. Moreover, HIM has already been deployed on Lazada recommendation scenario and gains 3.38% on CTR prediction on average on the online A/B test. Our codes are available in https://***/xiaojin-nj/HIM.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a kind of imaging modality, which offers clearer images of soft tissues than computed tomography (CT). It is especially suitable for brain disease detection. It is beneficial to detect diseases automatically and accurately. We proposed a pathological brain detection method based on brain MR images and online sequential extreme learning machine. First, seven wavelet entropies (WE) were extracted from each brain MR image to form the feature vector. Then, an online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) was trained to differentiate pathological brains from the healthy controls. The experiment results over 132 brain MRIs showed that the proposed approach achieved a sensitivity of 93.51%, a specificity of 92.22%, and an overall accuracy of 93.33%, which suggested that our method is effective.

Performance appraisal has always been an important research topic in human resource management. A reasonable performance appraisal plan lays a solid foundation for the development of an enterprise. Especially as globalization and technology advance, in order to meet the fast-changing strategic goals and increasing cross-functional tasks, enterprises face new challenges in performance appraisal. How to improve employees’ ability to accept new knowledge efficiently and constantly has been an urgent problem for enterprises. In this paper, we propose an automatic method which generation multiple-choice questions by utilizing the relations between different terminology. Graphical model is used to extract core concept from different corpus while word embedding technology is used to indicate the relevant relations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed question generation method outperforms the traditional manual method in both efficiency and confusion.

Voice conversion (VC) aims to modify the speaker’s timbre while retaining speech content. Previous approaches have tokenized the outputs from self-supervised into semantic tokens, facilitating disentanglement of speech content information. Recently, in-context learning (ICL) has emerged in text-to-speech (TTS) systems for effectively modeling specific characteristics such as timbre through context conditioning. This paper proposes an ICL capability enhanced VC system (ICL-VC) employing a mask and reconstruction training strategy based on flow-matching generative models. Augmented with semantic tokens, our experiments on the LibriTTS dataset demonstrate that ICL-VC improves speaker similarity. Additionally, we find that k-means is a versatile tokenization method applicable to various pre-trained models. However, the ICL-VC system faces challenges in preserving the prosody of the source speech. To mitigate this issue, we propose incorporating prosody embeddings extracted from a pre-trained emotion recognition model into our system. Integration of prosody embeddings notably enhances the system’s capability to preserve source speech prosody, as validated on the Emotional Speech database.

Towards Open-World Recommendation: An Inductive Model-based Collaborative Filtering Approach

Recommendation models can effectively estimate underlying user interests and predict one's future behaviors by factorizing an observed user-item rating matrix into products of two sets of latent factors. However, the user-specific embedding factors can only be learned in a transductive way, making it difficult to handle new users on-the-fly. In this paper, we propose an inductive collaborative filtering framework that contains two representation models. The first model follows conventional matrix factorization which factorizes a group of key users' rating matrix to obtain meta latents. The second model resorts to attention-based structure learning that estimates hidden relations from query to key users and learns to leverage meta latents to inductively compute embeddings for query users via neural message passing. Our model enables inductive representation learning for users and meanwhile guarantees equivalent representation capacity as matrix factorization. Experiments demonstrate that our model achieves promising results for recommendation on few-shot users with limited training ratings and new unseen users which are commonly encountered in open-world recommender systems. Current smartphones generally cannot continuously authenticate users during runtime. This poses severe security and privacy threats: A malicious user can manipulate the phone if bypassing the screen lock. To solve this problem, our work adopts a continuous and passive authentication mechanism based on a user's touch operations on the touchscreen. Such a mechanism is suitable for smartphones, as it requires no extra hardware or intrusive user interface. We study how to model multiple types of touch data and perform continuous authentication accordingly. As a first attempt, we also investigate the fundamentals of touch operations as biometrics by justifying their distinctiveness and permanence. A one-month experiment is conducted involving over 30 users. Our experiment results verify that touch biometrics can serve as a promising method for continuous and passive authentication.

In web topic detection, detecting “hot” topics from enormous User-Generated Content (UGC) on web data poses two main difficulties that conventional approaches can barely handle: 1) poor feature representations from noisy images and short texts; and 2) uncertain roles of modalities where visual content is either highly or weakly relevant to textual cues due to less-constrained data. In this paper, following the detection by ranking approach, we address the problem by learning a robust shared representation from multiple, noisy and complementary features, and integrating both textual and visual graphs into a k-Nearest Neighbor Similarity Graph (k-N 2 SG). Then Non-negative Matrix Factorization using Random walk (NMFR) is introduced to generate topic candidates. An efficient fusion of multiple graphs is then done by a Latent Poisson Deconvolution (LPD) which consists of a poisson deconvolution with sparse basis similarities for each edge. Experiments show significantly improved accuracy of the proposed approach in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods on two public data sets.

A Universal data-Driven Spatial Interpolation Framework for the Measurements of Environmental Sites

The accurate spatial distribution of environmental pollutant metrics is crucial for evaluating human exposure and managing the environment. Spatial interpolation, which relies on the measurements of limited environmental sites, is often necessary. However, commonly used geostatistical methods often introduce significant prediction biases, leading to misleading assessments and decision-making processes. Reported machine learning studies usually required intensive spatial datasets and sites’ measurements, as well as special complex algorithm for target pollutant. In this study, we propose and validate a simple and universal data-driven spatial interpolation framework for environmental sites’ measurements. We employ a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) as the data-driven algorithm to leverage spatial dataset. We demonstrate the implementation and validation of the framework using two representative ambient pollutants, namely ozone and PM2.5. The results reveal a relative mean absolute error of only 9% for ozone and 13% for PM2.5. Compared to the traditional inverse distance weight method and ordinary kriging method, the proposed framework reduces errors by 70% and 79% respectively. Furthermore, the R-squared values between independent measurements from additional geographic locations and the corresponding predicted results using the proposed method reach 0.96 for ozone and 0.97 for PM2.5, showcasing its excellent and consistent performance. The unique input dataset and universal algorithm architecture illustrate the distinct advantages compared to previous machine learning studies. With the rapid increase of remote sensing and numerical modeling datasets in the environmental field, we anticipate that data-driven methods will replace traditional mathematical approaches. This study provides a simple yet universal interpolation framework and is expected to accelerate the adoption of these advancements. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Exploring open-vocabulary video action recognition is a promising venture, which aims to recognize previously unseen actions within any arbitrary set of categories. Existing methods typically adapt pretrained image-text models to the video domain, capitalizing on their inherent strengths in generalization. A common thread among such methods is the augmentation of visual embeddings with temporal information to improve the recognition of seen actions. Yet, they compromise with standard less-informative action descriptions, thus faltering when confronted with novel actions. Drawing inspiration from human cognitive processes, we argue that augmenting text embeddings with human prior knowledge is pivotal for open-vocabulary video action recognition. To realize this, we innovatively blend video models with Large Language Models (LLMs) to devise Action-conditioned Prompts. Specifically, we harness the knowledge in LLMs to produce a set of descriptive sentences that contain distinctive features for identifying given actions. Building upon this foundation, we further introduce a multi-modal action knowledge alignment mechanism to align concepts in video and textual knowledge encapsulated within the prompts. Extensive experiments on various video benchmarks, including zero-shot, few-shot, and base-to-novel generalization settings, demonstrate that our method not only sets new SOTA performance but also possesses excellent interpretability. © 2024 ACM.
