Automatically generated questions often suffer from problems such as unclear expression or factual inaccuracies, requiring a reliable and comprehensive evaluation of their quality. Human evaluation is widely used in the field of question generation (QG) and serves as the gold standard for automatic metrics. However, there is a lack of unified human evaluation criteria, which hampers consistent and reliable evaluations of both QG models and automatic metrics. To address this, we propose QGEval, a multi-dimensional Evaluation benchmark for Question Generation, which evaluates both generated questions and existing automatic metrics across 7 dimensions: fluency, clarity, conciseness, relevance, consistency, answerability, and answer consistency. We demonstrate the appropriateness of these dimensions by examining their correlations and distinctions. Through consistent evaluations of QG models and automatic metrics with QGEval, we find that 1) most QG models perform unsatisfactorily in terms of answerability and answer consistency, and 2) existing metrics fail to align well with human judgments when evaluating generated questions across the 7 dimensions. On the Effectiveness of Acoustic BPE in Decoder-Only TTS

Discretizing speech into tokens and generating them by a decoder-only model have been a promising direction for text-to-speech (TTS) and spoken language modeling (SLM). To shorten the sequence length of speech tokens, acoustic byte-pair encoding (BPE) has emerged in SLM that treats speech tokens from self-supervised semantic representations as characters to further compress the token sequence. But the gain in TTS has not been fully investigated, and the proper choice of acoustic BPE remains unclear. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive study on various settings of acoustic BPE to explore its effectiveness in decoder-only TTS models with semantic speech tokens. Experiments on LibriTTS verify that acoustic BPE uniformly increases the intelligibility and diversity of synthesized speech, while showing different features across BPE settings. Improved Bounds for Sampling Solutions of Random CNF Formulas

Let Φ be a random k-CNF formula on n variables and m clauses, where each clause is a disjunction of k literals chosen independently and uniformly. Our goal is to sample an approximately uniform solution of Φ (or equivalently, approximate the partition function of Φ). Let α = m/n be the density. The previous best algorithm runs in time npoly(k,α) for any α 2k/300 [Galanis, Goldberg, Guo, and Yang, SIAM J. Comput.'21]. Our result significantly improves both bounds by providing an almost-linear time sampler for any α 2k/3. The density α captures the average degree in the random formula. In the worst-case model with bounded maximum degree, current best efficient sampler works up to degree bound 2k/5 [He, Wang, and Yin, FOCS'22 and SODA'23], which is, for the first time, superseded by its average-case counterpart due to our 2k/3 bound. Our result is the first progress towards establishing the intuition that the solvability of the average-case model (random k-CNF formula with bounded average degree) is better than the worst-case model (standard k-CNF formula with bounded maximal degree) in terms of sampling solutions. Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation, pivotal for guiding users to their next interested locale, grapples with the persistent challenge of data sparsity. Whereas knowledge graphs (KGs) have emerged as a favored tool to mitigate the issue, existing KG-based methods tend to overlook two crucial elements: the intention steering users’ location choices and the high-order topological structure within the KG. In this paper, we craft an Intention-aware knowledge Graph (IKG) that harmonizes users’ visit histories, movement trajectories, and location categories to model user intentions. Building upon IKG, our novel Intention-aware knowledge Graph Network (IKGN) delves deeper into the POI recommendation by weighing and propagating node embeddings through an attention mechanism, capturing the unique locational intent of each user. A sequential model like GRU is then employed to ensure a comprehensive representation of users’ short- and long-term location preferences. An empirical study on two real-world datasets validates the effectiveness of our proposed IKGN, with it markedly outshining seven benchmark rival models in both Recall and NDCG metrics. False claims that have been previously fact-checked can still spread on social media. To mitigate their continual spread, detecting previously fact-checked claims is indispensable. Given a claim, existing works retrieve fact-checking articles (FC-articles) for detection and focus on reranking candidate articles in the typical two-stage retrieval framework. However, their performance may be limited as they ignore the following characteristics of FC-articles: (1) claims are often quoted to describe the checked events, providing lexical information besides semantics;and (2) sentence templates to introduce or debunk claims are common across articles, providing pattern information. In this paper, we propose a novel reranker, MTM (Memoryenhanced Transformers for Matching), to rank FC-articles using key sentences selected using event (lexical and semantic) and pattern information. For event information, we propose to finetune the Transformer with regression of ROUGE. For pattern information, we generate pattern vectors as a memory bank to match with the parts containing patterns. By fusing event and pattern information, we select key sentences to represent an article and then predict if the article fact-checks the given claim using the claim, key sentences, and patterns. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that MTM outperforms existing methods. Human evaluation proves that MTM can capture key sentences for explanations. The retinal nerve fiber layer defects (RNFLD) provide early objective evidence for many retinal abnormalities, especially early glaucoma. The recent success of deep learning has led to exciting prospects in automating the detection of RNFLD, but it is highly dependent on the availability of large-scale datasets carefully annotated by experienced ophthalmologists, which is both time-consuming and cost-prohibitive. Most previous works on RNFLD detection lack a unified annotation scheme. In addition, they fail to exploit the intrinsic morphological characteristics of retinal nerve fiber bundles (RNFB). This work presents an automatic RNFB tracing method that is applicable not only in automating the RNFLD annotation process, but also in performing a quasi-polar transformation on fundus images for subsequent RNFLD detection tasks. Also, our proposed method paves the way for alleviating the problem of inter-annotator variation incurred merely by different annotation habits among annotators and reducing the noise before the input stage. Experiments reveal that our proposed quasi-polar transformation provides a significant boost to the existing RNFLD detection method and surpasses the state-of-the-art F1 by 4.2%, and that our method also offers a more accurate and reasonable description of RNFLD detection results, which demonstrates the orientation of RNFLD rather than vague position indication.

Applying large language models (LLMs) to academic API usage shows promise in reducing researchers' efforts to seek academic information. However, current LLM methods for using APIs struggle with the complex API coupling commonly encountered in academic queries. To address this, we introduce SoAy, a solution-based LLM methodology for academic information seeking. SoAy enables LLMs to generate code for invoking APIs, guided by a pre-constructed API calling sequence referred to as a solution. This solution simplifies the model's understanding of complex API relationships, while the generated code enhances reasoning efficiency. LLMs are aligned with this solution-oriented, code-based reasoning method by automatically enumerating valid API coupling sequences and transforming them into queries and executable *** evaluate SoAy, we introduce SoAyBench, an evaluation benchmark accompanied by SoAyEval, built upon a cloned environment of APIs from AMiner. Experimental results demonstrate a 34.58-75.99% performance improvement compared to state-of-the-art LLM API-based baselines. Charge prediction aims to predict the final charge for a case according to its fact description and plays an important role in legal assistance systems. With deep learning based methods, prediction on high-frequency charges has achieved promising results but that on few-shot charges is still challenging. In this work, we propose a framework with multi-grained features and mutual information for few-shot charge prediction. Specifically, we extract coarse- and fine-grained features to enhance the model’s capability on representation, based on which the few-shot charges can be better distinguished. Furthermore, we propose a loss function based on mutual information. This loss function leverages the prior distribution of the charges to tune their weights, so the few-shot charges can contribute more on model optimization. Experimental results on several datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method. Besides, our method can work well on tiny datasets and has better efficiency in the training, which provides better applicability in real scenarios. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Learning from Semi-Factuals: A Debiased and Semantic-Aware Framework for Generalized Relation Discovery

We introduce a novel task, called Generalized Relation Discovery (GRD), for open-world relation extraction. GRD aims to identify unlabeled instances in existing pre-defined relations or discover novel relations by assigning instances to clusters as well as providing specific meanings for these clusters. The key challenges of GRD are how to mitigate the serious model biases caused by labeled pre-defined relations to learn effective relational representations and how to determine the specific semantics of novel relations during classifying or clustering unlabeled instances. We then propose a novel framework, SFGRD, for this task to solve the above issues by learning from semi-factuals in two stages. The first stage is semi-factual generation implemented by a tri-view debiased relation representation module, in which we take each original sentence as the main view and design two debiased views to generate semi-factual examples for this sentence. The second stage is semi-factual thinking executed by a dual-space tri-view collaborative relation learning module, where we design a cluster-semantic space and a class-index space to learn relational semantics and relation label indices, respectively. In addition, we devise alignment and selection strategies to integrate two spaces and establish a self-supervised learning loop for unlabeled data by doing semi-factual thinking across three views. Extensive experimental results show that SFGRD surpasses state-of-the-art models in terms of accuracy by 2.36% ∼5.78% and cosine similarity by 32.19%∼ 84.45% for relation label index and relation semantic quality, respectively. Diffusion models are powerful generative models, and this capability can also be applied to discrimination. The inner activations of a pre-trained diffusion model can serve as features for discriminative tasks, namely, diffusion feature. We discover that diffusion feature has been hindered by a hidden yet universal phenomenon that we call content shift. To be specific, there are content differences between features and the input image, such as the exact shape of a certain object. We locate the cause of content shift as one inherent characteristic of diffusion models, which suggests the broad existence of this phenomenon in diffusion feature. Further empirical study also indicates that its negative impact is not negligible even when content shift is not visually perceivable. Hence, we propose to suppress content shift to enhance the overall quality of diffusion features. Specifically, content shift is related to the information drift during the process of recovering an image from the noisy input, pointing out the possibility of turning off-the-shelf generation techniques into tools for content shift suppression. We further propose a practical guideline named GATE to efficiently evaluate the potential benefit of a technique and provide an implementation of our methodology. Despite the simplicity, the proposed approach has achieved superior results on various tasks and datasets, validating its potential as a generic booster for diffusion features.
