Quantitative Simulation Study of Metal Additive Manufacturing by Kinetic Monte Carlo

Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is a disruptive manufacturing technology that takes into account the needs of complex structural forming and high-performance component forming. At present, the understanding of metal additive manufacturing simulation methods is not thorough enough, which restricts the development of metal additive manufacturing. Present work discusses the evolution of KMC method simulation results for simulating metal additive manufacturing at different length ratios and different scanning speeds. The results reveal that as the scanning speed increases, the main grains in the simulation results are transformed from coarse columnar grains to crescent-shaped grains, which are in good agreement with the existing experimental results. Besides, as the ratio of unit physical length to unit simulation length increases, the ratio of unit physical time to unit simulation time gradually decreases.

In order to investigate the ability of different objective functions based on modal data for SDD problems, six objective functions are defined and a comparison study is presented in this paper. To make a fair comparison, a quantified index name damage vector consistency is defined to describe the consistency between the identified damage vector factor and the assume one. Simply-supported beam with 10 finite elements is simulated which provides modal data generation and damage cases simulation. The percentage of DVC equaling to 100% in the all 100 times is also calculated which shows the objective function based on MTMAC is the best one for SDD.

Flexural performance of reinforced concrete beams strengthened using near-surface-mounted carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer bars: Effects of bonding patterns

The near-surface-mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) technique is effective for enhancing the load carrying capacity of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams. However, this technique significantly reduces the deformability of strengthened RC beams. To overcome this, the present study combines the NSM strengthening method with the partial bonding technique: the strengthening FRP reinforcement is partially bonded onto the concrete substrate). Six full-scale 4.3 m long RC beams strengthened with NSM FRPs using various bonding patterns were tested. The results indicated that mechanical interlocking grooves slightly improve the load carrying capacity, but have a negligible effect on the deformability of the strengthened beams. A decrease in the bond length increased deformability by 27.2 %, with only a 7.6 % drop in load capacity compared to that of the beam with full bonding. An advanced finite element model was developed and validated to confirm an optimal bond length of 930 mm for maximum flexural performance.

High-efficiency algorithms for simulating metal failure effects under multiaxial repeated loadings

High-efficiency algorithms are proposed for numerically integrating elasto-plastic rate equations for the purpose of simulating metal failure effects under repeated loading conditions. Results are obtained with a newly established elasto-plasticity model which can automatically simulate both low and high cycle fatigue failure effects, with reference to neither damage-like variables nor ad hoc failure criteria. Novelties are incorporated in a few respects. First, multiaxial loading processes with arbitrarily changing principal stresses and axes can be treated in a broad sense beyond usually treated proportional loading cases. Second, by means of the commonly used J2-invariant of the deviatoric stress, multiaxial loading cases can be directly treated just as in the uniaxial loading case. Third, high cost in time consumption can be considerably reduced in evaluating both low and high cycle failure effects. Numerical examples are presented for simulating uniaxial and multiaxial fatigue failure effects and simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. Results show that the computation speed with the new algorithms exceeds 600 times faster than usual integration algorithms.

A new approach is proposed to characterize the work-hardening behavior of metals based on the stress-strain data from uniaxial extension *** this new approach,the yield strength as a function of the plastic work can be determined by directly fitting a wellchosen single-variable shape function to any given uniaxial data from the initial yielding up to the strength limit,in an explicit sense with no need to carry out the usual tedious trial-and-error procedures in treating nonlinear elastoplastic rate equations toward identifying numerous unknown *** examples show that the simulation results with the new approach are in accurate agreement with the test data.

With the vigorous development of building structures and important infrastructure, structural health monitoring is necessary. Because there is no need to establish structural finite element modeling and train for various structural conditions, the data-driven and unsupervised learning method is very popular. Principal component analysis is a powerful signal analysis tool, but its lack of physical significance and the loss of sensitive information have hindered its wider application. Therefore, the improved principal component analysis based narrowband filtering is proposed to extract mode shapes and construct the structural state vectors, so that the damage index is more sensitive to damage and robust to the environmental factors. After the vibration response of the long-term monitoring is analyzed by the principal component analysis, the Gaussian mixture model clustering analysis is used to classify the structural states. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the analysis of the simulation data of ASCE Benchmark structure and the measured data of steel beams in the lab. The results show that the structural state vector is sensitive to structural damage. The clustering analysis of Gaussian mixture model can distinguish the structural states. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.

Mechanical behaviour of bonded joints including viscoelasticity for the adhesive under triangular pulse loading and harmonic loading

The constitutive law of the interface is a prime issue when evaluating the strength of adhesively bonded joints. The polymer-based adhesives exhibit loading rate sensitivity and damping properties owing to their viscous nature, especially at high temperatures or under water. This paper aims to establish a shear-lag model to elucidate the mechanical behaviour of adhesively bonded joints under triangular pulse loading and harmonic loading. The extended shear-lag model is focused on improving the previous shear-lag models by including viscoelastic behaviour using the Kelvin model for the adhesive. Analytical expressions of the slip and interfacial shear stress distribution have been respectively presented for pull-push joint and pull-pull joint under triangular pulse loading. Compared with finite element simulation, the predictive model shows an excellent agreement with the FEA results. The damping properties including the storage modulus, loss modulus and loss factor for these two bonded joints subjected to harmonic loading are theoretically derived. Finally, results obtained from the predictive model are presented to illustrate how the bond length, loading rate and loading frequency affect the behaviour of such bonded joints.

Effect of filter material and porosity on the energy storage capacity characteristics of diesel particulate filter thermoelectric conversion mobile energy storage system

The thermal energy generated by the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is converted into electrical energy through the thermoelectric generator (TEG) and stored in a mobile battery power energy storage (MBPE) system. The filter material and porosity directly affect the regeneration temperature of the DPF, which in turn affects the thermoelectric conversion capability of the thermoelectric module (TEM). This study explores the energy storage capacity characteristics for the DPF-TEG of the MBPES system at a regeneration temperature of 923 K. The filter materials considered are cordierite, mullite and SiC with porosities of 0.4, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.65 and 0.7. The maximum output power and thermoelectric conversion efficiency are analyzed. The thermal input power for the SiC filter is approximately 2.4 times and 1.8 times than that of the cordierite filter and the mullite filter. As the porosity increases from 0.4 to 0.7, the output current for the DPF-TEG of the MBPES system with the 3 filter materials ranges from 0.66 A to 2.11 A. The output voltage changes from 50.62 V to 161.98 V. The maximum output power varies from 33.36 W to 341.59 W and the conversion efficiency rises from 0.88% to 2.72%.

Impact Damage Analysis of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Structure with Rib

Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is a widely used structural form in engineering. FRP ribs can absorb most of the impact energy to protect the structure from damage. The purpose of this study is to obtain the impact resistance of FRP ribs by test and simulation. Taking glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) oil sump as the object, the damage degree of structure under different impact angles, impact velocity, and impactor masses is compared and analyzed by material test, impact test, and simulation. It can be seen from the test results that the design of surface ribs has a great influence on the energy absorption effect of the shell. The constitutive parameters of the shell material are obtained by testing, and the failure mode of the ribs is analyzed by finite element simulation. The impact effects of flying stones with different incident angles, velocities, kinetic energy, and geometric dimensions on the shell are compared and analyzed. The results show that, at the same impact energy, the impact resistance characteristics change regularly under different working conditions. Under a certain incident angle, the damage effect caused by flying stones in a specific mass range is greater. Beyond a certain incident angle, the damage begins to occur, and the larger the incident angle is, the greater the damage effect is. Combined with the actual situation and road standards, the defense of medium quality flying stones is a major concern in the design of oil pan. The results are helpful for designing reasonable ribs to improve the reliability of FRP structures.

A compact double-layer wideband circularly polarized microstrip antenna with parasitic elements

In this article, a new broadband circularly polarized (CP) microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with a sequential phase (SP) square-loop feeding structure is proposed. The presented antenna is composed of a square-loop feeding structure, four L-shaped parasitic patches with L-shaped slots, four parasitic square patches, and a corner-truncated square patch. At first, a SP square-loop is designed as a feeding structure. Then, four L-shaped parasitic patches with L-shaped slots are utilized to generate one CP mode by a capacitive coupled way. At last, four parasitic square patches and a corner-truncated square patch are together placed above the SP feeding structure to broaden the circularly polarized bandwidth (CPBW). The presented antenna has a wide 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of 16.7% (5.4 GHz, 4.95-5.85 GHz), and a wide 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 25.5% (5.5 GHz, 4.8-6.2 GHz). The proposed antenna features compact structure and broad 3-AR bandwidth which could completely cover the WLAN (5.725-5.85GHz) band. Therefore, the proposed antenna is suitable for circular polarization applications in C band.
