Based on firefly algorithm (FA), a structural damage detection (SDD) and moving force identification (MFI) method is proposed in this paper. The basic principle of FA is introduced, some key parameters, such as light intensity, attractiveness, and rules of attraction are defined. The moving forcesinduced responses of damage structures are defined as a function of both damage factors and moving forces. By minimizing the difference between the real and calculated responses with given damage factors and moving forces, the identified problem is transformed into a constrained optimization problem and then it can be hopefully solved by the FA. In order to assess the accuracy and the feasibility of the proposed method, a three-span continuous beam subjected to moving forces is taken as an example for numerical simulations. The illustrated results show that the method can simultaneously identify the structural damages and moving forces with a good accuracy and better robustness to noise. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

A novel two-step intelligent algorithm is proposed for structural damage detection (SDD) by combining particle swarm optimization and Nelder-Mead (PSO-NM) algorithm, in which two steps are deployed for exploring a better balance between computational efficiency and accuracy. In the first step, a modal strain energy based index (MSEBI) is defined and used to precisely locate damages of structures. In the second step, structural damage extent is determined by PSO-NM algorithm. Some beam-like structures are adopted to assess its applicability. A parametric study and the effect of measurement noise on the method are also considered. The illustrated numerical simulation results show that the novel method can not only locate structural damage but also identify damage extent of beam-like structures with a good robustness to noises.

An integrated method is proposed for structural nonlinear damage detection based on time series analysis and the higher statistical moments of structural responses in this study. It combines the time series analysis, the higher statistical moments of AR model residual errors and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering techniques. A few comprehensive damage indexes are developed in the arithmetic and geometric mean of the higher statistical moments, and are classified by using the FCM clustering method to achieve nonlinear damage detection. A series of the measured response data, downloaded from the web site of the Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL) USA, from a three-storey building structure considering the environmental variety as well as different nonlinear damage cases, are analyzed and used to assess the performance of the new nonlinear damage detection method. The effectiveness and robustness of the new proposed method are finally analyzed and concluded.

The longitudinal ultrasonic guided waves in oblique defects pipes were investigated experimentally and numerically in the paper. A novel method of the defect detection for pipes is proposed based on the Duffing -Holmes chaotic oscillator. Five kinds of defects with inclined angle of 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees were discussed arid analyzed, respectively. Based on the experiment, the corresponding simulations were conducted by using finite element software [S-DYNA. Both experimental arid numerical results show that this proposed method could be used to inspect the weaker guided waves;and the reflection coefficient of echo increases with the decrease of the inclined angle. One of the main objectives of this study was to activate the pozzolanic activity of sludge, produced by municipal sewage treatment plants (MSTP), which makes it become an admixture to replace a part of cement in cement-based materials. Nowadays, a significant quantity of MSTP sludge is obtained in China, and the disposal of sludge presents a rising challenge for the environment, which is the reason why this paper examines the possibility of adding this waste product to cement-based materials. MSTP sludge was activated by thermal (Incineration) and mechanical (Grinding) treatment. Meanwhile, the changes in the crystalline structure of MSTP sludge incineration ash (MSA) were evaluated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and mortar strength tests were carried out on the mortars containing MSA to investigate the reactivity of the produced materials. The obtained results revealed that the optimal activation conditions of MSA were as follows: incinerated at 800 C for 2.5 hours followed by fast cooling in air and then ground until 60 minutes. Moreover, we have observed that MSA has an appreciable effect on the increase in compressive strength of the mortars and using of 20% MSA as a replacement of part of cement could be considered the optimum content. More importantly, the tests showed that extract toxicity of heavy metals in MSA were much lower than the national standard though some heavy metals existed in MSA. These results demonstrate the feasibility of recycling MSTP sludge has become an admixture in cement-based materials for construction engineering.

Adhesively bonded pipe are extensively used in pipe system and pipeline failure under torsional loading is one of the most common failure modes. Owing to the complication of theoretical analysis, development of numerical method for optimized design and stress analysis of a strong joint remains a pressing issue. In this paper, a realistic bilinear local bond-slip law is employed for analyzing the behavior of adhesively bonded pipe joints under torsion, based on a parameters study by ANSYS finite element software. Several parameters (i.e. the shear modulus of pipe coupler) are considered for assessing shear stress distribution in the adhesive and load-displacement relationship of the interface. Finally, the factors influencing the interfacial behavior is analyzed. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.

Vibration and noise are important engineering problem and many methods have been developed to control and/or absorb the *** to now,there are a number of strategies to control the response of a system such as passive control,active control,semi-active control and hybrid *** achieve perfect performance of target system,the structures or mechanical systems should be designed to suit for different types of loading such as particularly dynamic and transient loads,and to obtain high static stiffness resulting in a small static deflection and a small dynamic stiffness resulting in a low natural *** mainaim of this paper is to improve the nonlinear pendulum system with negative stiffness suspension element with external excitation,and to explore the bifurcation and chaos characteristics contained in the pendulum *** governing equations of pendulum are derived by Lagrange *** analyze the bifurcation of nonlinear response of pendulum system,the phase portrait and bifurcation diagram are obtained ***,the Floquet multipliers are obtained by solving the perturbation equation with original equation with numerical *** results show that the main responses of pendulum system are periodic,and through saddle node bifurcation the system come into chaotic *** parametric resonance may occur when the excitation frequency closed to the natural frequency at vertical direction of whole *** variation of stiffness and excitation frequency has a large influence on the performance of the pendulum,and the amplitude of excitation may deduce unbounded motion in the resonance region.

In this study, the Tabu search (TS) algorithm is introduced into the optimal sensor placement (OSP) problem in the field of the structural health monitoring and moving force identification. A TS-based OSP procedure is proposed and further evaluated by some numerical simulations on a 2D planar truss model. The mean values of off-diagonal elements in a modal assurance criterion (MAC) matrix are used as the optimization objective function. Based on the criteria of MAC, determinant of fisher matrix, matrix condition number, and the least mean square error, the TS-based OSP procedure is evaluated through comparing with ones due to both of the energy coefficient-effective independence (ECEFI) and the effective independence (EFI) algorithms. The results show that the proposed TS-based OSP procedure is feasible with a higher accuracy. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this study, a two step damage prognosis method is proposed for beam-like truss structures via combining modal curvature change (MCC) with modal strain energy change ratio (MSECR). Changes in the modal curvature and the elemental strain energy are selected as the indicator of damage prognosis. Different damage elements with different damage degrees are simulated. In the first step, the finite element method is used to model a beam-like truss structure and the displacement modes are got. The damage region is estimated by the MCC of top and bottom chords of a beam-like truss structure. In the second step, the elemental MSECR in the damage region is calculated and the maximum MSECR element is deemed as the damage element. The simulation results show that this method can accurately locate the damage in the beam-like truss structure. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
