As a challenging task in the structural health monitoring (SHM) field, structural damage detection, one of most important issues of the SHM system, is mathematically converted into a constrained optimization problem, which is then hopefully solved by a swarm intelligence (SI) based algorithm proposed in this paper. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally evaluated by the measured data of four damage patterns of a building model of 3-storey steel frame structure made in laboratory. Some illustrated results show that the proposed method is very suitable for the structural multi-damage identification, which also show that the SI-based algorithm for structural damage detection can provide an effective and robust tool in the SHM field. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The fitting curve given by least square method is applied in numerical analyzing. The results from semi-unrestrained and completely restricted modeling show convex deformation and damage on oblique section clearly. Advanced virtual experiment illustrates the differences between loading with displacement and pressure, due to the phenomenon that pressing by force will cause deformation on top surface but displacing load wouldn't. The fitting idea by orthogonal base function will provide a widely road for studying the constitute law of concrete material. Otherwise, the progress of solving nonlinear function is discussed for designing new numerical analyzing tool, and the frame of programming based on nonlinear method is obtained.

A fitting curve of stress-strain relation given is applied in numerical analyzing based on Legendre orthogonal polynomial and least square method. The nonlinear constitutive model is employed to examine the shape of an arch dam. For the asymmetries and high water pressure, the safety of High Arch Dam is one of key issues in the design and construction of High Arch Dam. The simulation results show that the basic mechanical performance index is symmetrical distribution. The dam mainly bears pressure and no obvious tensile stress exists in the dam when water level is normal. Material yields in dam heel when 1.4 times overloading is considered. It can be concluded that the dam is reliable and the safety margin is satisfactory.

In order to simulate the elastic-plastic behavior of concrete better, an effective curve fitting method is employed to find the constitutive function based on Legendre orthogonal polynomial and least square method. And a new numerical analysis program using arch-length method to deal with nonlinear problem is designed. The most important consequence is that not only the fitting function, but also its derivative function and its definite integral are recursive. The fitting curve given by new method is applied in numerical analyzing. Cube model is examined under uniaxial compressing with completely restricted boundary conditions. The results show convex deformation and the damage on oblique section clearly. Compared with those piecewise fitting functions, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial fitting function obtained can be introduced into the nonlinear harden-soften character of concrete constitute law more convenient because of its uniform function form and continuous derived feature. And the fitting idea by orthogonal base function will provide a widely road for studying the constitute law of concrete material.

Using arc-length method, the progress of solving nonlinear function is discussed for designing new numerical analyzing tool, and the frame of programming based on nonlinear method is compiled. The results from completely restricted modeling show convex deformation and the damage on oblique section. And with the concrete elastic-plastic constitutive used in numerical simulation including add uninstall, typical engineering examples inspect reliability of the elastic-plastic numerical analysis program. This provides the basis and guidance for the future of the specific program design.

Woven textile sandwich composite (WTSC) is a light-weight structural material. The manufacturing method of WTSC was introduced in the paper. To reveal the quasi-static and the dynamic crushing behavior of WTSC, out-of-plane compression tests were carried out. Low-velocity impact experiments were carried out to investigate the anti-crush ability of WTSC. The results of the quasi-static and dynamic compression tests show that the woven textile sandwich material has good energy absorption ability. From the difference of the peak loads, it is concluded that the woven textiles have strain rate sensitivity. The intact woven textile sandwich panel and the destroyed one have different anti-crush abilities. Different methods are used to enhance the anti-penetrating of the intact woven textile sandwich panels, for example, increasing the content of the glass fibers, enlarging the diameter of the glass fibers and enlarging the height of front faces and the whole panel. From the experiments, it is concluded that WTSC has light weight, great specific strength and good energy absorption ability. WTSC is a promising light-weight structural material for vehicle bodies. © 2012 IEEE.

Automotive weight reduction is a challenging task due to many performance targets that must be satisfied simultaneously, in particular in terms of static and dynamic properties direct relating to strength, stiffness and NVH characteristics of vehicles. Compared to all-steel vehicle frame, multi-material substitutions are adopted in each structural component for higher product performance and a lightweight electric vehicle frame in this paper. The SHELL63 element is selected to construct finite element (FE) model of vehicle frame based on the FEA software ANSYS. Under full bending loading and torsional loading respectively, static analysis of frame is performed, and the strength and stiffness are evaluated as well. The Block Lanczos is adopted for dynamic analysis of vehicle frame. Their first eight modal properties are obtained and far away exciting frequency range of rough road. The multi-material vehicle frame has been designed to be made of mild steel, aluminum and magnesium alloys. Its static and dynamic properties show that the strength, stiffness and NVH characteristics are better than ones from all-steel vehicle frame with weight reduction of 31.7%. These procedures will help to design a lightweight and thus to provide technical support for reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

An eigenspace projection clustering method for structural damage detection

An eigenspace projection clustering method is proposed for structural damage detection by combining projection algorithm and fuzzy clustering technique. The integrated procedure includes data selection, data normalization, projection, damage feature extraction, and clustering algorithm to structural damage assessment. The frequency response functions (FRFs) of the healthy and the damaged structure are used as initial data, median values of the projections are considered as damage features, and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm are used to categorize these features. The performance of the proposed method has been validated using a three-story frame structure built and tested by Los Alamos National laboratory, USA. Two projection algorithms, namely principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), are compared for better extraction of damage features, further six kinds of distances adopted in FCM process are studied and discussed. The illustrated results reveal that the distance selection depends on the distribution of features. For the optimal choice of projections, it is recommended that the Cosine distance is used for the PCA while the Seuclidean distance and the Cityblock distance suitably used for the KPCA. The PCA method is recommended when a large amount of data need to be processed due to its higher correct decisions and less computational costs.

A new algorithm for nonlinear damage detection is proposed based on a model of autoregressive moving average with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARMA/GARCH) in this paper. First, the reference ARMA model is constructed with the acceleration responses measured in reference (healthy) state. One-step-ahead error predictions are then modeled as GARCH models. Secondly, the new nonlinear damage-sensitive feature (DSF) is defined as the GARCH model conditional standard deviation of ARMA model residual error in the reference and unknown states, respectively. The performance of the presented algorithm is evaluated and verified by the experimental data of a three-story building structure provided by Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL) USA. Finally, the new algorithm is compared with the traditional methods based on the standard deviation ratio of the residual error of ARMA model. The illustrated results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the extent of nonlinear damage with a higher accuracy, less computational cost and more robustness against operational and environmental variety. This makes the proposed algorithm applicable for structural health monitoring in situ.

To suggest designing instructions for integrated woven textile sandwich composites (IWTSCs), anti-crush properties of IWTSC and the corresponding ductile deformation mechanism were investigated. Quasi-static out-of-plane crushing and dynamic impact tests were carried out. Typical deformation curves with a relative stable deformation plateau were obtained from tests. Failure of IWTSC is ductile through coupled compression-shear deformation. An analytical plastic model was proposed to explain ductile mechanism of IWTSC qualitatively, including densification caused by interactions among inclined piles. Combining with qualitative analysis, comparisons between two kinds of IWTSC panels with piles of different density and thickness reveal the key to design a ductile IWTSC. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
