The impact of biomass burning emissions in Southeast Asia on black carbon aerosols in southern China

Since 2013, China's air quality has significantly improved due to the reduction of anthropogenic emissions. The influence of long-distance transport of biomass burning emissions in Southeast Asia (BBSEA) on air quality in southern China (SC) would likely continue to increase, especially under the trend of global warming. We quantify the contribution of BBSEA to the surface and high-altitude BC concentrations in SC (two provincial capitals: Guangzhou (GZ), Guangdong, and Kunming (KM), Yunnan) in March-April 2014 and 2019 by using the GEOS-Chem global chemical transport model and its adjoint. For three severe pollution events in SC in 2014, the contributions of BBSEA to daily average BC concentrations in GZ are 0.08-0.19 μg m -3 (2%-5%) at the surface and 0.20-0.78 μg m -3 (59%-73%) at 700 hPa. In KM, the corresponding contributions are 0.27-0.54 μg m -3 (15%-33%) and 0.25-0.45 μg m -3 (28%-45%). The transport time of BBSEA to the surface of GZ (KM) is about 3-6 days (1-5 days). The shift in wind fields from southwest to west and stronger wind speeds in April likely shorten the transport time of BBSEA to SC. On March 27, 2019, the relative contributions of BBSEA to the surface BC concentrations increase by 10% in GZ and 14% in KM, compared to March 23, 2014. Our study would offer scientific support for understanding BC sources and potential improvement of air quality in SC.

In 2021, China adopted comprehensive “Groundwater Management Regulations” to address critical groundwater issues, building upon the foundation of a national groundwater monitoring network established by 2020. This commentary reviews the development of China's National Groundwater Monitoring Network, examines its current monitoring capacity, and highlights ongoing groundwater issues and related ecological and environmental challenges. The network now comprises over 20,000 monitoring wells across 10 major river basins in China. Despite this progress, three key challenges persist in advancing groundwater knowledge: (a) insufficient data from the Tibetan Plateau, a crucial headwater region for many of Asia's major rivers; (b) limited understanding of how groundwater systems affect ecohydrological processes and ecosystem services; and (c) the identification and mitigation of environmental geological hazards driven by groundwater changes. We advocate for the integration of the groundwater observational data with physics-based groundwater models, artificial intelligence, and deep learning techniques to deepen our understanding of these complex, largely hidden groundwater systems, providing critical insights for both scientific research and regulatory decision-making. China's National Groundwater Monitoring Network, established by 2020, comprises over 20,000 monitoring wells across 10 major river basins key challenges include limited understanding of alpine groundwater, unquantified ecological impacts, and unidentified and unmanaged geological hazards It is crucial to integrate national groundwater observations with both physics-based and AI-driven models to address these challenges effectively China's “Groundwater Management Regulations”, enacted in 2021, aim to address critical groundwater issues, supported by a national groundwater monitoring network established by 2020. But how effectively can this network reveal China's hidden groundwater, and what obstacles lie ahead?

Dynamic rupture directivity significantly impacts earthquake hazard and loss assessments; yet, it is often overlooked, leading to uncertainties. We developed high-resolution, broadband, deterministic scenarios for earthquake hazards and losses of the Zhujiangkou Fault (ZF) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of southern China. The calculations cover the entire physical process from fault dynamic rupture through strong ground motion propagation to quantitative loss estimations. We fully incorporate the real 3D physical fields, including fault structure, regional stress, friction conditions, inhomogeneous velocity, and topography. Results revealed higher earthquake hazards and losses triggered by the northwestern ZF segment, affecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Macao, and Guangzhou. The rupture directivity effect, driven by seismic wave interferences in forward propagation, leads to stark differences in hazards and losses across urban agglomerations, even under similar fault conditions. These findings help enhance the precision of earthquake risk assessments and provide practical approaches for disaster prevention.

ABSTRACTThe traditional steady-state method and transient method are unable to measure the permeability in the matrix micropores of low-permeability coal seam, particle coal cannot be used as the object of measuring the matrix permeability under the loading condition, and the conventional theoretical model to describe the gas flow characteristics is unreasonable in the matrix pores of low-permeability coal seam under the loading condition. In order to solve above problems,the unidirectional apparent diffusion model of gas was established, and the analytical solution of the model was derived. Then, according to the principle of mass conservation, the relationship between permeability and diffusion coefficient was derived. An experimental method (apparent diffusion coefficient permeability) and a unidirectional apparent diffusion coefficient-permeability model were established to describe the permeability in the matrix micropores of low-permeability coal seams. In order to verify the rationality of the model, the unidirectional desorption flow experiment of gas under triaxial stress was carried out with a standard cylindrical coal core of Φ50 mm × 100 mm. At the same time, the comparative experiment of radial desorption flow of the same kind of columnar coal was performed. Under the same conditions, the steady-state permeability experiment was conducted. The experimental results of unidirectional desorption flow show that the apparent diffusion coefficient-permeability has a negative exponential relationship with the increase of confining pressure. The analysis indicates that the increase of confining pressure leads to the closure of pores and fractures, which makes the pore radius decrease. Therefore, the pore size and structure directly affect the apparent diffusion coefficient permeability, which results in the decrease of apparent diffusion coefficient permeability. Membrane-based processes, such as reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF), are widely used for water purification and desalination due to their high energy efficiency and exceptional solute-water selectivity. Nevertheless, the fundamental, molecular-level mechanisms governing ion selectivity are still not fully understood. This study explores ion selectivity in polyamide desalination membranes, focusing on the partitioning and diffusion mechanisms of co-ions and counterions. Our experimental and molecular simulation results reveal that electrostatic interactions play a key role in impeding co-ion partitioning while enhancing their diffusion. The results further suggest that ion selectivity is predominantly controlled by the partitioning step, particularly the selective partitioning of co-ions. This finding highlights the importance of focusing on ion partitioning at the water-membrane interface to improve membrane ion-ion selectivity. In addition, our results point out to a trade-off between partitioning and diffusion, requiring careful tuning of these processes. Overall, this study provides the scientific foundation for molecular design of membranes with high ion-ion selectivity.

Since markov chain is widely used in various fields, the relevant literatures of markov chain theories are analyzed base on CiteSpace in this paper, adopting 10,000 literatures in CNKI and 10,000 literatures in WOS as datas. The relationship among markov chain, monte carlo integral and bayesian theory is analyzed primarily. What's more, the hidden markov model, markov random field, markov decision process and grey-markov model derived from markov chain are investigated emphatically. Ultimately, we reviews the development history of markov chain, makes a visual analysis of the authors, sorts out the research status of markov chain, and makes a comprehensive review of the application of markov chain.

Damping of Particle-Reinforced Composites Due to Interfacial Sliding

Mechanical damping of composites reinforced by randomly distributed particles due to interfacial sliding is analyzed. The matrix is elastically isotropic, and the particles are assumed rigid and of identical radii. An auxiliary problem is solved at first for the steady-state response of an infinite matrix containing a single inclusion to a harmonic external load. The result is then used to derive the explicit expression of the specific damping capability of the composite by using Mori-Tanaka＇s mean-field method. Numerical results are given and discussed in detail. It is concluded that the overall damping of the composite depends on several factors, including volume fraction of particles, Poisson＇s ratio of matrix and a dimensionless parameter that incorporates the combined effects of particle size, matrix stiffness, interracial viscosity and vibration frequency. The result is expected to be helpful in tailoring the damping performance of particle-reinforced composites.

Satellites of the Broucke-Hadjidemetriou-Hénon family of periodic unequal-mass three-body orbits

The Broucke-Hadjidemetriou-Hénon’s (BHH) orbits are a family of periodic orbits of the three-body system with the simplest topological free group word a, while the BHH satellites have free group words ak (k > 1), where k is the topological exponent. Janković and Dmitrašinović [Phy. Rev. Lett. 116, 064301 (2016)] reported 57 new BHH satellites with equal mass and found that at a fixed energy the relationship between the angular momentum (L) and the topologically rescaled period (T/k) is the same for both of the BHH orbits (k = 1) and the BHH satellites (k > 1). In this letter, we report 419,743 new BHH orbits (k = 1) and 179,253 new BHH satellites (k > 1) of the three-body system with unequal mass, which have never been reported, to the best of our knowledge. Among these newly-found 598,996 BBH orbits and satellites, about 33.5% (i.e., 200,686) are linearly stable and thus many among them might be observed in practice. Besides, we discover that, for the three-body system with unequal mass at a fixed energy, relationship between the angular momentum (L) and topologically rescaled period (T/k) of the BHH satellites (k > 1) is different from that of the BHH orbits (k = 1). Triple systems are common and key objects in astronomy. The three-body problem has received much more attention in recent years1–3. All observed periodic triple stars systems4–6 belong to the Broucke-Hadjidemetriou-Hénon’s (BHH) family7–9. The BHH orbits are a family of periodic orbits of the three-body system with the simplest topological free group word10 a, while Janković and Dmitrašinović 1 gained 58 equal-mass BHH satellite orbits which have free group words ak (k > 1), where k is the topological exponent. However, the BHH satellite orbits with equal mass is lack of realistic meaning because they do not exist in practice. Here we present 419743 new BHH orbits and 179253 new BHH satellites (k > 1) for three-body system with unequal mass. Especially, 48761 among the 179253 new BHH satellites are stable and have unequal masses. It suggests that these 48761 stable BHH satellites could be found by the observation. Besides, for the three-body system with equal mass at a fixed energy, it was demonstrated that the relationship between the angular momentum (L) and topological scaled period (T/k) of the BHH satellites is the same as that of the BHH orbits1. However, we found that this does not hold for the three-body system with unequal mass. Our findings have broad impact for the astrophysical scenario: they could inspire the theoretical and observational study of the triple system, the formation of triple stars11, the gravitational waves pattern12 and the gravitational waves observation13 of the triple system. © 2020, CC BY.
