The authors propose an information theoretic criterion, called spectral information divergence (SID) for spectral similarity and discriminability. It is derived from the concept of divergence arising in information theory and can be used to describe the statistics of a spectrum. Unlike spectral angle mapper (SAM) which extracts geometric features between two spectra, SID views each pixel spectrum as a random variable and then measures the discrepancy of probabilistic behaviors between two spectra. In order to evaluate SID, SAM is used for comparison via hyperspectral data. Experimental results show that SID can characterise spectral similarity and variability more effectively than SAM.

The transfer function of these filters is a parallel connection of several branches with transfer functions of the form G/sub l/(z/sup L/)F/sub l/(z), where the length of each F/sub l/(z) is L. It is shown that by properly selecting the F/sub l/(z)'s the overall impulse response can be divided into several blocks of L samples in such a manner that in each block the impulse response is a polynomial of a given degree. The degree is one less than the number of branches, whereas the overall length of the impulse response is N=ML, where M is the length of the G/sub l/(z)'s. Efficient implementation forms are proposed for the overall filter. Examples are included illustrating the efficiency of the proposed approach in implementing narrow-band linear-phase FIR filters.

A new application for RBF neural networks in nonlinear mixed pixel classification for hyperspectral imaging is presented. It is a three-layer neural network with the input layer specified by spectral signatures of a mixed pixel vector, the hidden layer used for nonlinear mixing functions and the output layer used to produce classification results of the mixed pixel vector. A noise estimation method in conjunction with noise subspace projection is developed to reliably estimate the member of mixing materials plus interference signatures that can be used as the number of hidden nodes as well as the member of input nodes. The least-mean-square learning algorithm is applied to adjust parameters used in the hidden layer and weights of the output layers adaptively and simultaneously so as to achieve best possible performance. The performance is evaluated through a series of experiments via AVIRIS data. A comparative analysis is also conducted among various methods.

We present a novel method for designing polynomial FIR predictors for fixed-point environments. Our method yields filters that perform exact prediction of polynomial signals even with short coefficient word lengths. Under ordinary coefficient truncation or rounding, the prediction capability degrades, or may be totally lost. With the proposed method, the filters are designed so that the predictive properties are exactly preserved in fixed-point implementations. The proposed filter design method is based on integer programming (IP) and can be directly applied to any fixed-point FIR design specifications which can be formulated in a form of linear constraints on the filter coefficients.

Orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) has been successfully applied to hyperspectral image processing. In order for OSP to be effective, the number of bands must be no less than that of signatures to be classified so that there are sufficient dimensions to accommodate individual signatures to discriminate one another via orthogonal projection. This intrinsic constraint is not an issue for hyperspectral images since they generally have hundreds of bands which are more than the number of signatures resident within images. It, however, may not be true for multispectral images where the number of signatures to be classified is greater than the number of bands such as 3-band SPOT images. This paper presents a generalization of OSP, called generalized OSP (GOSP) to relax this constraint in such a fashion that OSP can be extended to multispectral image processing in an unsupervised fashion. The idea of GOSP is to create new additional band images nonlinearly from original multispectral images so as to achieve sufficient dimensionality prior to OSP classification. It is then followed by an unsupervised OSP classifier, called automatic target detection and classification algorithm (ATDCA) for classification. The effectiveness of the proposed GOSP is evaluated by a 3-band SPOT and a 4-band Landsat MSS images. The experimental results has shown that GOSP significantly improves the classification performance of OSP. © 1998 SPIE.

Ultrasonic range sensors are used to obtain the information required for collision-free navigation of a mobile robot in a semi-structured or unstructured environment. A set of range readings from a ring of sonars are correlated to acquire a 2D map of the robot's environment. The map is continuously enhanced via novel matching and update algorithms as new data are collected while the robot is in motion. The algorithm utilizes confidence measures that are directly obtained from the sonar's resolution or accuracy. There are no additional modeling assumptions and the approach is robust. The algorithms are experimentally tested on the Nomad 200 mobile robot and Nomad's Cognos Software Development Package. © 1998 IEEE.

In this paper, we present the extension of solutions to the multiscale deconvolution problem which appears in sensor array applications. The sensor outputs are assumed to be generated as a convolution of the unknown source signal, the so-called wavelet, with various time-scaled versions of an unknown impulse response of the medium, namely reflectivity sequences. Methods to deconvolve these signals are available if the scaling effects, referred to as time-scale factors, are truly known. Here we show that time-scale factors between the system impulse responses can be obtained from the sensor array measurements by using the scale transform properties which yield "absolutely blind" multiscale deconvolution scheme.

When trying to record a foetal ECG (FECG), one of the main problems is the interference from the maternal ECG (MECG). Three algorithms for eliminating maternal ECG are compared. Two adaptive filtering techniques, LMS (least mean square) and RLS (recursive least squares), are compared to a new algorithm that uses the blind source separation (BSS) theorem to separate the FECG from signals that are recorded with a lot of MECG interference. Simulation studies were first performed. Two independent ECG signals (sources) were simulated; one was considered as the MECG while the other was the FECG. By mixing the two sources with various channels, the algorithms were checked and compared. The algorithms were tested on real data as well as that taken from DAISY (the DAtabase for the Identification of SYstems). Conclusions concerning the mixing system were drawn both from the real data and from the simulation experiments.

Errors caused by loss of coded data can seriously affect an H.263 decoded image sequence. Several scenarios may occur that include: (1) loss of macroblocks in I or P frames, and (2) loss of motion vectors of macroblocks in P frames. The missing macroblocks in I and P frames can be reasonably reconstructed by exploiting the correlation between adjacent macroblocks. Existing methods which reconstruct the motion vector of a macroblock rely on existing motion vectors of surrounding macroblocks, and the results are not always satisfactory. A novel reconstruction technique for restoration of macroblocks with missing motion vectors is proposed. This method exploits the image continuity inside and across the borders of the macroblocks. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the proposed algorithm is good, both subjectively and objectively.

We convert a constant modulus (CM) array into a robust smart antenna by modifying the error criterion to be a weighted sum of conventional CM array error and decision-directed equalization error. The new error criterion enables the CM array to (1) separate digital cochannel signals with multipath and inter-symbol interference and (2) track fading signals. The key contribution is that the modified error criterion adds phase sensitivity to the otherwise phase insensitive CM error criterion. We present computer simulations to show the signal tracking properties of the CM array using the modified error criterion in a fading environment.
