Various depth estimation models are now widely used on many mobile and IoT devices for image segmentation, bokeh effect rendering, object tracking and many other mobile tasks. Thus, it is very crucial to have efficient and accurate depth estimation models that can run fast on low-power mobile chipsets. In this Mobile AI challenge, the target was to develop deep learning-based single image depth estimation solutions that can show a real-time performance on IoT platforms and smartphones. For this, the participants used a large-scale RGB-to-depth dataset that was collected with the ZED stereo camera capable to generated depth maps for objects located at up to 50 m. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Raspberry Pi 4 platform, where the developed solutions were able to generate VGA resolution depth maps at up to 27 FPS while achieving high fidelity results. All models developed in the challenge are also compatible with any Android or Linux-based mobile devices, their detailed description is provided in this paper. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Band Sampling of Hyperspectral Anomaly Detection in Effective Anomaly Space

This article investigates four issues, background (BKG) suppression (BS), anomaly detectability, noise effect, and interband correlation reduction (IBCR), which have significant impacts on its performance. Despite that a recently developed effective anomaly space (EAS) was designed to use data sphering (DS) to remove the second-order data statistics characterized by BKG, enhance anomaly detectability, and reduce noise effect, it does not address the IBCR issue. To cope with this issue, this article introduces band sampling (BSam) into EAS to reduce IBCR and further suppress BKG more effectively. By implementing EAS in conjunction with BSam (EAS-BSam), these four issues can be resolved altogether for any arbitrary anomaly detector. It first modifies iterative spectral-spatial hyperspectral anomaly detection (ISSHAD) to develop a new variant of ISSHAD, called iterative spectral-spatial maximal map (ISSMax), and then generalizes ISSMax to EAS-ISSMax, which further enhances anomaly detectability and noise removal. Finally, EAS-BSam is implemented to reduce IBCR. As a result, combining EAS, BSam, and ISSMax yields four versions: EAS-BSam, EAS-ISSMax, BSam-SSMAX, and EAS-BSam-SSMax. Such integration presents a great challenge because all these four versions are derived from different aspects, iterative spectral-spatial feedback process, compressive sensing, and low-rank and sparse matrix decomposition. Experiments demonstrate that EAS-BSam and EAS-BSam-SSMax show their superiority to ISSHAD and many current existing hyperspectral anomaly detection (HAD) methods. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Iterative Gaussian-Laplacian Pyramid Network for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Gaussian pyramid (GP) is a commonly used image coding technique that encodes an image as a pyramid that is stacked by a set of images with Gaussian window-reduced sizes and multiple spatial resolutions. Associated with GP, a Laplacian pyramid (LP) can be also constructed to represent differential images between images in two consecutive layers of GP. Such resulting Gaussian-Laplacian pyramid (GLP) performs data compression in a lossless and lossy manner. A convolutional neural network (CNN) consists of a series of layers concatenated in a feedforward manner where each layer has a convolutional sublayer (CL) and a pooling sublayer (PL). Interestingly, each layer implemented by CL and PL in a CNN can be realized by a single layer in GP in the sense that CL and PL can be carried out by a low-pass Gaussian filter operated as a Gaussian kernel in a single layer of GP. This article develops a new approach to hyperspectral image classification (HSIC), called the GLP network (GLPN), which uses not only GP to realize CNN but also LP to capture differential information between two consecutive layers that CNN cannot. Furthermore, by incorporating an iterative process into GLPN, we can derive an iterative GLPN (IGLPN) that can be considered a companion of a recently developed iterative random training sampling CNN (IRTS-CNN) by replacing CNN with GLPN. Since GLPN can realize CNN in a better way, it is expected that IGLPN will perform better than IRTS-CNN and also significantly reduce computational efficiency compared to IRTS-CNN. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

multi-Granularity Prosodic Speech Synthesis with Grammar Information

Personalized speech synthesis involves learning an individual's unique speaking patterns from a reference audio to generate speech that mimics the speaker's habitual rhythm. However, the one-to-many mapping between text and speech, combined with the dynamic nature of personalized speech style characteristics in the reference audio, poses significant challenges for accurate personalized speech synthesis. In this paper, we propose a Grammar Infused multi-granularity Prosody Network (GMG ProsodyNet) for personalized speech synthesis. Specifically, 1) We model prosodic features hierarchically at the levels of utterance, content syntax, word, and phoneme. We utilize the utterance-level prosodic feature to guide the prediction of fine-grained prosodic features according to the hierarchical property of prosodic features. We introduce a context syntax encoder to improve the prediction accuracy of duration, pitch, and energy characteristics in the synthesized audio. The proposed word-level prosodic encoder can efficiently extract valuable pitch dynamic and speech continuity features from the word spectrum. For controlling subtle prosodic nuances, we employ phoneme-level prosodic modeling. 2) We extract syntax level prosodic features from the syntax graph constructed by Graph Neural Network (GNN) with word as node, exploiting grammatical dependencies between distant words. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed GMG ProsodyNet can effectively encode delicate and personalized prosodic features, leading to improved speech synthesis quality, fluency, and naturalness. © 2024, The Authors. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted semi-grant-free (SGF) transmission, which enables grant-based users to share their spectrum with grant-free (GF) users, becomes an effective solution to the challenge of massive connections. However, this improvement is limited as most of the existing schemes can only admit one GF user. In this paper, we propose a novel NOMA-assisted SGF transmission scheme to support the access of multiple GF users in unmanned aerial vehicle networks. Moreover, in order to further enhance the advantages of the multi-user SGF scheme, two SGF schemes with power matching are devised to further improve the performance by employing the benefits of distributed contention. For ease of performance evaluation, the theoretical expressions of achievable sum rate and average age of information of the three SGF schemes are derived by applying order statistics. We also investigate the high signal-to- noise approximation expressions of sum rate for these schemes to give more insight. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance improvement of three proposed SGF schemes and validate the correctness of the theoretical analysis expressions. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

This work explores avenues and target areas for optimizing FPGA-based control hardware for experiments conducted on superconducting quantum computing systems and serves as an introduction to some of the current research at the intersection of classical and quantum computing hardware. With the promise of building larger-scale error-corrected quantum computers based on superconducting qubit architecture, innovations to room-temperature control electronics are needed to bring these quantum realizations to fruition. The QICK (Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit) is one leading experimental FPGA-based implementations. However, its integration into other experimental quantum computing architectures, especially those using superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities, is largely unexplored. We identify some key target areas for optimizing control electronics for superconducting qubit architectures and provide some preliminary results to the resolution of a control pulse waveform. With optimizations targeted at 3D superconducting qubit setups, we hope to bring to light some of the requirements in classical computational methodologies to bring out the full potential of this quantum computing architecture, and to convey the excitement of progress in this research.

This study investigates the optimization of signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in superconducting quantum computing readout signals through adaptive filtering. Quantum computing technology has the potential to revolutionize various fields by delivering exponential speedup in solving certain computational problems. However, the technology's practical implementation is hindered by the difficulty of extracting clean, reliable signals during the readout phase, with various sources of noise presenting a significant barrier to clean signals. This noise, often present in readout profiles due to imperfect isolation, degrades the system's overall SNR, thus impeding the ability to extract the quantum state accurately. The research leverages the power of adaptive filtering to improve the SNR of quantum computing readout signals. Specifically, an adaptive filter is implemented in a PYNQ overlay on an FPGA, and eventually will be connected to a quantum computing system. The system models the noise with a Least Mean Squares (LMS) adaptive filter, and then subtracts the estimated noise from the received signal to improve the SNR. A Direct Memory Access (DMA) channel is used to handle the signal processing, delivering efficient, high-speed data transfer between the PYNQ system and the hardware. The study explores the benefits of this adaptive filtering technique, potentially providing a significant contribution to practical and fast quantum computing.

Visually impaired people face lots of challenges when doing daily tasks like grocery shopping. Hence, a grocery shopping navigation assistant that covers the shopping preparation, the route creation, the navigation through the store and the product identification has been designed. In this paper we present the design flow of a novel system using the Internet of Things (IoT) and computer Vision (CV) to assist people with visual impairment (PVI) for grocery shopping. The system starts with assisting the user creating his shopping list using the personal smart phone and Speech-to-Text (STT). Then, the system accesses the database of grocery store to optimizes the route for locating the items in the shopping list with minimal time and effort. Once the route is created and the user is in the store, the smart phone physical navigation system starts using landmarks-QR codes and using Text-to-Speech (TTS) for guidance. When the user is correctly placed, the product recognition starts and TTS is used to fetch the product. © 2022 IEEE.

Simulations are commonly used to develop and evaluate video encryption algorithms. Although these approaches are useful for demonstrating theoretical feasibility and algorithm performance, they neglect practical challenges and real-world communication conditions. This oversight creates a critical gap in evaluating their effectiveness and security in practical applications. In this paper, we describe a novel, to the best of our knowledge, video encryption scheme that employs a modified chaotic Colpitts oscillator, a customized Josephus problem, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) operations, and is implemented in visible light communication (VLC) environment. The modified Colpitts oscillator reveals significant phenomena, the most prominent for this study being chaos. The encryption scheme involves block scrambling and pixel-level permutation employing a customized Josephus problem and a column and row shifting technique. Diffusion is then achieved through a custom Josephus problem-oriented RNA operation combined with basic RNA operations and cipher block chaining (CBC). Based on the results, we found that the customized Josephus problem-based permutation performed more efficiently than traditional methods, whereas the column and row shifting permutation was more robust. By eliminating key sequence coding and item-to-item operations, the proposed RNA operation reduces computational overhead. This video encryption scheme is proven to be effective and resilient at securing video data transmitted over the VLC channel, and it constitutes a significant advancement in areas such as surveillance, medical imaging, and military communication requiring robust secured video data. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Photovoltaic (PV) system fault diagnosis is crucial because it helps PV system operators reduce energy and income losses. It also decreases the risk of fire and electric shock from PV system failures. Thus, the implementation of fault diagnosis tool is required. The most well-known techniques are machine learning models. Although these techniques provided well in terms of diagnosis and classification accuracy, they rely on manual feature extraction, which is time consuming, expensive, and requires diagnostic skill. Manual feature extraction is a problem that has to be addressed. This paper therefore presents a PV system fault diagnosis techniques that can automatically extract features from raw data in order to classify PV system faults. The implemented methods include long short-term memory (LSTM) bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks, which are deep learning based algorithms. Finally, the presented fault diagnosis approaches showed a good diagnosis performances when applied to an emulated GCPV system. © 2022 IEEE.
