NEWFOCUS is an EU COST Action targeted at exploring radical solutions thatcould influence the design of future wireless networks. The project aims toaddress some of the challenges associated with optical wireless communication(OWC) and to establish it as a complementary technology to the radio frequency(RF)-based wireless systems in order to meet the demanding requirements of thefifth generation (5G) and the future sixth generation (6G) backhaul and accessnetworks. Only 6G will be able to widely serve the exponential growth inconnected devices (i.e., more than 500 billion) in 2030, real-time holographiccommunication, future virtual reality, etc. Space is emerging as the newfrontier in 5 and 6G and beyond communication networks, where it offershigh-speed wireless coverage to remote areas both in lands and sees. Thisactivity is supported by the recent development of low-altitude Earth orbitsatellite mega-constellations. The focus of this 2nd White Paper is on the useof OWC as an enabling technology for medium- and long-range links fordeployment in (i) smart-cities and intelligent transportation systems;(ii)first- and last-mile access and backhaul/fronthaul wireless networks;(iii)hybrid free-space optics/RF adaptive wireless connections;(iv)space-to-ground, inter-satellite, ground-to-air, and air-to-air communications;and (v) underwater communications. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Whilst techniques for narrative generation and agent behaviour have made significant progress in recent years, natural language processing remains a bottleneck hampering the scalability of Interactive Storytelling systems. This demonstrator introduces a novel interaction technique based solely on emotional speech recognition. It allows the user to use speech to interact with virtual actors without any constraints on style or expressivity, by mapping the recognised emotional categories to narrative situations and virtual characters feelings. In most Interactive Storytelling systems, user interaction is based on natural language communication with virtual agents, either through isolated utterances or through dialogue. Natural language communication is also an essential element of interactive narratives in which the user is supposed to impersonate one of the story's characters. Whilst techniques for narrative generation and agent behaviour have made significant progress in recent years, natural language processing remains a bottleneck hampering the scalability of Interactive Storytelling systems. In this paper, we introduce a novel interaction technique based solely on emotional speech recognition. It allows the user to take part in dialogue with virtual actors without any constraints on style or expressivity, by mapping the recognised emotional categories to narrative situations and virtual characters feelings. Our Interactive Storytelling system uses an emotional planner to drive characters' behaviours. The main feature of this approach is that characters' feelings are part of the planning domain and are at the heart of narrative representations. The emotional speech recogniser analyses the speech signal to produce a variety of features which can be used to define ad-hoc categories on which to train the system. The content of our interactive narrative is an adaptation of one chapter of the XIXth century classic novel, Madame Bovaiy, which is well suited to a formalisation in terms of characters' feelings. At various stages of the narrative, the user can address the main character or respond to her, impersonating her lover. The emotional category extracted from the user utterance can be analysed in terms of the current narrative context, which includes characters' beliefs, feelings and expectations, to produce a specific influence on the target character, which will become visible through a change in its behaviour, achieving a high level of realism for the interaction. Avatars are increasingly used to express our emotions in our online communications. Such avatars are used based on the assumption that avatar expressions are interpreted universally among all cultures. This paper investigated cross-cultural evaluations of avatar expressions designed by Japanese and Western designers. The goals of the study were: (1) to investigate cultural differences in avatar expression evaluation and apply findings from psychological studies of human facial expression recognition, (2) to identify expressions and design features that cause cultural differences in avatar facial expression interpretation. The results of our study confirmed that (1) there are cultural differences in interpreting avatars' facial expressions, and the psychological theory that suggests physical proximity affects facial expression recognition accuracy is also applicable to avatar facial expressions, (2) positive expressions have wider cultural variance in interpretation than negative ones, (3) use of gestures and gesture marks may sometimes cause counter-effects in recognizing avatar facial expressions. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.

Recognition of emotions from multimodal cues is of basic interest for the design of many adaptive interfaces in human-machine and human-robot interaction. It provides a means to incorporate non-verbal feedback in the interactional course. Humans express their emotional state rather unconsciously exploiting their different natural communication modalities. In this paper, we present a first study on multimodal recognition of emotions from auditive and visual cues for interaction interfaces. We recognize seven classes of basic emotions by means of visual analysis of talking faces. In parallel, the audio signal is analyzed on the basis of the intonation of the verbal articulation. We compare the performance of state of the art recognition systems on the DaFEx database for both complement modalities and discuss these results with regard to the theoretical background and possible fusion schemes in real-world multimodal interfaces.

In this paper we propose to use SecondLife® as an evaluation environment for multiagent systems that model social group dynamics and social interactions. To this end we developed a control interface for NPCs in SecondLife®that allows for running supervised or unsupervised long-term evaluations. Thus, this platform offers the possibility to move evaluation studies from the laboratory into a "natural" setting for the participants. First tests show the potential for this kind of evaluation. In this article, we propose an approach of nonverbal interaction with virtual agents to control agents' behavioral expressivity by extracting and combining acoustic and gestural features. The goal for this approach is twofold, (i) expressing individual features like situated arousal and personal style and (ii) transmitting this information in an immersive 3D environment by suitable means. Current research has identified the need to equip robots with perceptual capabilities that not only recognise objective entities such as visual or auditory objects but that are also capable of assessing the affective evaluations of the human communication partner in order to render the communication situation more natural and social. In equivalence to Watzlawick's statement that "one cannot not communicate" (1968) it has been found that also in human-robot interactions one cannot be not emotional. It is therefore crucial for a robot to understand these affective signals of its communication partner and react towards them. However, up to now, online emotion recognition in realtime, interactive systems has scarcely been attempted as apparently demands concerning robustness and time constraints are very high. In this paper we present an empathic anthropomorphic robot (torso) that mirrors the emotions happiness, fear and neutral as recognised from the speech signal by facial expressions.
