In this paper, the problem of color image segmentation is addressed as a pixel labeling problem. The observed color image is assumed to be the degraded version of the image labels. We have proposed a new Markov random field (MRF) model known as constrained MRF (CMRF) model to model the unknown image labels and Ohta (I 1 I 2 I 3 ) model is used as the color model. The unique feature of the proposed CMRF model is found to posses a unifying feature of modeling scene and texture images as well. The labels are estimated using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation criterion. A hybrid algorithm is proposed to obtain the MAP estimate and the performance of the algorithm is found to be better than that of using simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. The performance of the proposed model is compared with JSEG method and the proposed model is found to be better than JSEG method.

In the Shape from Focus (SFF) method, a sequence of images of a 3D object is captured for computing its depth profile. However, it is useful in several applications to also derive a high resolution focused image of the 3D object. Given the space-variantly blurred frames and the depth map, we propose a method to optimally estimate a high resolution image of the object within the SFF framework.

In this poster, we present an approach to contex-tualized semantic image annotation as an optimization problem. Ontologies are used to capture general and contextual knowledge of the domain considered, and a genetic algorithm is applied to realize the final annotation. Experiments with images from the beach vacation domain demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach and illustrate the added value of utilizing contextual information.

Steganographic fmgerprints are convened with the individuality of the steganographic methods. The basic goals of this article are: 1. To evaluate sequential and randomly embedded steganographic evidence within digital images. 2. To identify the "steganographic fmgerprint" of spatial domain based steganographic methods. Steganographic fmgerprinting is the next step towards forensic analysis, reachable only if one may localize steganographic content within an image. The presented detection method works equally well for sequential and random embedding. We will show that the new method may improve the message length estimation, detection accuracy and give an indication of the embedding method. In addition we will show the false alarm rate of 0.9 for the proposed method, while the false alarm rate for the commonly used technique RS Steganalysis is 2.4. ©2006 IEEE.

Nowadays, the huge non-indexing quantities of image archives (especially document images) require the development of intelligent tools for their retrieval with convenience comparable of the texts search engines. The proposed technique addresses the document retrieval problem by a word matching procedure. It performs matching directly in the images bypassing OCR and using word-images as queries. It is constituted of two different parts: The offline and the online operation. In the offline operation, the archive of document images is examined and the results are stored in a database. The online operation consists of the Web interface, the creation of the word's image and finally, the matching stage. The proposed matching process it can be described shortly as a two-threshold rating system. Finally, the proposed system has been build and it can be found in at the Web address: http://***/irs2.

A New Technique for Solving a Jigsaw Puzzle

A new technique for solving jigsaw puzzles is proposed, which takes advantage of both geometrical and color features. It is considered that an image is being divided into a number of pieces (sub-images). The proposed technique is based on extraction of a set of boundary characteristic points and on a Kohonen self-organized feature map (KSOFM) color reduction technique. For each characteristic point a set of color and geometrical features are extracted. The technique compares these sets of features and decides whether two sub-images match or not. When a matching pair has been found, a corrective procedure is applied in order for these sub-images to fit exactly. Next, the proposed technique creates a new sub-image, which consists of the two matched sub-images. The whole matching procedure is being repeated until only one sub-image remains or no more matching sub-images can be found.

A new method for hand gesture recognition is proposed which is based on an innovative self-growing and self-organized neural gas (SGONG) network. Initially, the region of the hand is detected by using a color segmentation technique that depends on a skin-color distribution map. Then, the SGONG network is applied on the segmented hand so as to approach its topology. Based on the output grid of neurons, palm geometric characteristics are obtained which in accordance with powerful finger features allow the identification of the raised fingers. Finally, the hand gesture recognition is accomplished through a probability-based classification method.

In this paper, we present a new reconstruction method with volumetric registration and semi-automatic segmentation in a multi-view 3D freehand ultrasound imaging system. The new volumetric registration approach is performed on binarized walls using non-linear least squares. It can provide accurate multi-view reconstructions despite significant rigid target motion between different acoustic window acquisitions. A hybrid adaptive gradient vector flow (GVF) geometric active contour (GAC) model is used for image sequence segmentation. It allows for relatively simple initialization of the deformable model, while avoiding edge leaking at poor edges and small boundary gaps. The algorithms were validated on four ultrasound phantom data sets (eight sequences of a total of 336 images) and two echocardiography data sets (four sequences for a total of 75 images). Quantitative evaluation shows that automatic segmentation is comparable with manual segmentation. Using breath-holding and cardiac gating, volume estimates from multiview reconstructions of the left-ventricle were found to be in better agreement with clinical estimates than volumes estimated from single view reconstructions.

We propose a new semi-automatic segmentation strategy on echocardiographic images, which combines a recently introduced gradient vector flow (GVF) fast geometric active contour (GAC) model and a modified level sets methods applied to echocardiographic data by Corsi et al.. We call it adaptive GVF GAC model. We note that echocardiographic images are characterized by high levels of speckle noise, weakly-defined boundaries and severe gaps. We show that the new method, adapted for single object segmentation, can provide significantly improved performance over a competing level set method, and that was in turn shown to perform better than the original gradient vector flow method. The new method modifies the advection term in the speed function adoptively by estimating how close the propagated curve is to the target boundaries. We show both synthetic and real, freehand ultrasound image and echocardiographic image examples to illustrate the robustness and accuracy of the new segmentation method

A new method for the reduction of the number of colors in a digital image is proposed. The new method is based on the developed of a new neural network classifier that combines the advantages of the Growing Neural Gas (GNG) and the Kohonen Self-Organized Feature Map (SOFM) neural networks. We call the new neural network: Self-Growing and Self-Organized Neural Gas (SGONG). Its main advantage is that it defines the number of the created neurons and their topology in an automatic way. As a consecutive, isolated color classes, which may correspond to significant image details, can be obtained. The SGONG is fed by the color components and additional spatial features. To speed up the entire algorithm and to reduce memory requirements, a fractal scanning sub-sampling technique is used. The method is applicable to any type of color images and it can accommodate any type of color space. © The Eurographics Association 2005.
