The volume of multimedia traffic over wireless networks has been steadily increasing over the past decade. Unlike web browsing applications, multimedia data needs to satisfy stringent delay requirements since late packets are as good as lost packets. In this paper, we present a framework for the nodes in 802.11 networks to estimate the distribution of uplink access delay in Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC mechanism using locally available information. The access delay for a packet is defined as the time between the packet arriving at the head of line of MAC queue, and its ACK being received. In our proposed framework, each node periodically records channel occupancy information to estimate the distribution of access delay. We use NS-2 simulations to verify the accuracy of our proposed approach.

This work is motivated by the desire to use image analysis methods to identify and characterize images of food items to aid in dietary assessment. This paper introduces three texture descriptors for texture classification that can be used to classify images of food. Two are based on the multifractal analysis, namely, entropy-based categorization and fractal dimension estimation (EFD), and a Gabor-based image decomposition and fractal dimension estimation (GFD). Our third texture descriptor is based on the spatial relationship of gradient orientations (GOSDM), by obtaining the occurrence rate of pairs of gradient orientations at different neighborhood scales. The proposed methods are evaluated in texture classification and food categorization tasks using the entire Brodatz database and a customized food dataset with a wide variety of textures. Results show that for food categorization our methods consistently outperform several widely used techniques for both texture and object categorization.

This paper introduces a fuzzy framework for the simultaneous segmentation and registration in addition to bias field correction of MRI datasets. The framework utilizes prior information which may be available about the tissues' mean intensities and tissues' distribution through the datasets. Moreover it works on the given, original image intensities without any logarithmic transformation and thus produces more accurate results and faster performance. The algorithm is evaluated using simulated and real brain MRI data. The results show that the algorithm has indeed improved the segmentation accuracy.

Prediction of the amino acids that have a catalytic effect on the enzymes is a major stage in appointing the activity of the enzymes and classification. The biological activity of a protein usually depends on the existence of a small number of amino acids. Recently, many algorithms have been proposed in the literature for finding these amino acids which are complex and time consuming. In this paper, we will introduce a new method for predicting the active sites that will use the spatial coordinates and the type of amino acids that contain the active sites. In order to increase the speed we use an approximate graph isomorphism algorithm. Furthermore, this algorithm allows us to find several active sites for a protein and order them according to a RMSD (Root Mean Square Deviation) number which has several applications in biology.

In traffic monitoring applications, traffic speed is an important parameter of traffic management. The method for traffic speed measurement using video based on Spatio-Temporal (ST) model and frequency domain analysis is proposed in this paper. This method is designed to be able to measure the traffic speed in every pattern of road. The novel of proposed method is unfolding the edge information on ST model and analyse them in frequency domain to determine traffic speed. The proposed method is evaluated by compare with actual speed. The traffic speed is measured accurately 97.1%.

In order to successfully locate and retrieve document images such as technical articles and newspapers, a text localization technique must be employed. The proposed method detects and extracts homogeneous text areas in document images indifferent to font types and size by using connected components analysis to detect blocks of foreground objects. Next, a descriptor that consists of a set of structural features is extracted from the merged blocks and used as input to a trained Support Vector Machines (SVM). Finally, the output of the SVM classifies the block as text or not.
