In this paper, a role-based access control (KBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called multi-role based access control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. The object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data; 2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses; and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.

Automatic Lip-reading system is one of the different assistive technologies for hearing impaired or elderly people. We can imagine, for example, a dependent person ordering a machine with an easy lip movement or by a simple visemes (visual phoneme) pronunciation. The need for an automatic lip-reading system is ever increasing. The lip-reading system is decomposed in three subsystems, first we have the lip localization system, which localizes the lips in the digital input, then there is the feature extracting system, and finally we have the classification system, which maps feature vectors to visemes. The major difficulty of the lip-reading system is the extraction of the visual speech descriptors. In fact, to ensure this task it is necessary to carry out an automatic localization and tracking of the labial gestures. We present in this paper a new automatic approach for lip POI localization on a speaker's face based on the color information of mouth and a geometrical model of lips. This hybrid solution makes our method more tolerant to noise and artefacts in the image. The algorithm works in natural condition and experiments revealed that our lip POI localization approach for lip-reading purpose is possible using the proposed approach.

In recent year, lip-reading systems have received a great attention, since it plays an important role in human communication with computer especially for hearing impaired or elderly people. The need for an automatic lip-reading system is ever increasing. Today, extraction and reliable analysis of facial movements make up an important part in many multimedia systems such as videoconference, low communication systems, lip- reading systems. We can imagine, for example, a dependent person ordering a machine with an easy lip movement or by a simple syllable pronunciation. We present in this paper a new approach for lip localization and feature extraction in a speaker's face. The extracted visual information is then classified in order to recognize the uttered viseme (visual phoneme). To check our system performance we have developed our Automatic Lip Feature Extraction prototype (ALiFE). Experiments revealed that our system recognizes 70.95 % of French digits uttered under natural conditions.

An efficient access and indexing framework, called Affinity Hybrid Tree (AH-Tree), is proposed which combines feature and metric spaces in a novel way. The proposed framework helps to organize large image databases and support popular multimedia retrieval mechanisms like Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). It is efficient in terms of computational overhead and fairly accurate in producing query results close to human perception. AH-Tree, by being able to introduce the high level semantic image relationship as it is in its index structure, solves the problem of translating the content-similarity measurement into feature level equivalence which is both painstaking and error-prone. Algorithms for similarity (range and k-nearest neighbor) queries are implemented and extensive experiments are performed which produces encouraging results with low I/O and distance computations and high precision of query results. © 2007 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Motivated by humans' ability to lipread, the visual component is considered to yield information in the speech recognition system. The lip-reading is the perception of the speech purely based on observing the talker lip movements. The major difficulty of the lip- reading system is the extraction of the visual speech descriptors. In fact, to ensure this task it is necessary to carry out an automatic localization and tracking of the labial gestures. We present in this paper a new automatic approach for lip and point of interest localization on a speaker's face based both on the color information of mouth and a geometric model of lips. This hybrid solution makes our method more tolerant to noise and artifacts in the image. Experiments revealed that our lip POI localization approach for lip-reading purpose is promising. The presented results show that our system recognizes 94.64 % of French visemes.

Recently, network security has become an extremely vital issue that beckons the development of accurate and efficient solutions capable of effectively defending our network systems and the valuable information journeying through them. In this article, a distributed multiagent intrusion detection system (IDS) architecture is proposed, which attempts to provide an accurate and lightweight solution to network intrusion detection by tackling issues associated with the design of a distributed multiagent system, such as poor system scalability and the requirements of excessive processing power and memory storage. The proposed IDS architecture consists of (i) the Host layer with lightweight host agents that perform anomaly detection in network connections to their respective hosts, and (ii) the Classification layer whose main functions are to perform misuse detection for the host agents, detect distributed attacks, and disseminate network security status information to the whole network. The intrusion detection task is achieved through the employment of the lightweight Adaptive Sub-Eigenspace Modeling (ASEM)-based anomaly and misuse detection schemes. Promising experimental results indicate that ASEM-based schemes outperform the KNN and LOF algorithms, with high detection rates and low false alarm rates in the anomaly detection task, and outperform several well-known supervised classification methods such as C4.5 Decision Tree, SVM, NN, KNN, Logistic, and Decision Table (DT) in the misuse detection task. To assess the performance in a real-world scenario, the Relative Assumption Model, feature extraction techniques, and common network attack generation tools are employed to generate normal and anomalous traffic in a private LAN testbed. Furthermore, the scalability performance of the proposed IDS architecture is investigated through the simulation of the proposed agent communication scheme, and satisfactory linear relationships for both degradation of system response time

User feedback is widely deployed in recent multimedia research to refine retrieval performance. However, most of the existing online learning algorithms handle interactions of a single user, which may pose restrained performance due to the limited size of positive feedback. An alternative solution is to learn general user perceptions via collecting feedback from different users. The training process is initiated only when the number of feedbacks reaches a certain threshold. This could improve the performance but it becomes a manual process to decide the threshold and initiate the training process. To address this challenge, ire propose an advanced training method by adopting the association rule mining technique, which can effectively evaluate accumulated feedback and automatically invoke the training process. Training is performed per video rather than for all videos in the database, making the process more efficient and robust. In addition, it can further improve semantic modeling in the video database and continuously improve retrieval performance in the long run. As an example, the proposed method is applied to a mobile-based soccer video retrieval system and the experimental results are analyzed.

With the proliferation of multimedia data and ever growing requests for multimedia applications, new challenges emerged for efficient and effective managing and accessing large audio-visual collections. In this paper, we present a novel framework for video event detection, which plays an essential role in high-level video indexing and retrieval. Especially, since temporal information in a video sequence is critical in conveying video content, a hierarchical temporal association mining approach is developed to systematically capture the characteristic temporal patterns with respect to the events of interest. In this process, the unique challenges caused by the loose video structure and skewed data distribution issues are effectively tackled. In addition, an adaptive mechanism is proposed to determine the essential thresholds which are generally defined manually in the traditional association rule mining (ARM) approach. This framework thus largely relaxes the dependence on the domain knowledge and contributes to the ultimate goal of automatic video content analysis.

In this paper, a supervised multi-class classification approach called Adaptive Selection of information Components (ASIC) is presented. ASIC has the facilities to (i) handle both numerical and nominal features in a data set, (ii) pre-process the training data set to accentuate the spatial differences among the classes in the training data set to reduce further computational load requirements, and (iii) conduct supervised classification with the C-RSPM (Collateral Representative Subspace Projection Modeling) approach. Experimental results on a variety of data sets have shown that the proposed ASIC approach outperforms other well-known supervised classification methods such as C4.5, KNN, SVM, MLP, BN, RF, Logistic, and C-RSPM, with higher classification accuracy, lower training and classification times, and reduced memory storage and processing power requirements.

Improving the admission control process in wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN) based on the IEEE 802.16e standard can improve the QoS. Because IEEE 802.16e supports five classes of service as well as mobility, an admission control policy for non-preprovisioned service flow is proposed. This policy is compatible with the QoS parameters for each service class defined in the standard. As improvements, the guard channel scheme is used to give handover connections higher priority and a novel proportional bandwidth-borrowing scheme is added to prioritize the different service classes. The simulation results show the proposed admission control policy maximizes the bandwidth utilization and the use of the two schemes provides a reasonable priority order of new originated connections and handover connections of different service classes. The connection-blocking and connection-dropping probabilities were reduced to the extent that they can be ignored
