Recent virtualization-driven CPU architectural extensions involve tagging the hardware-managed Translation Look aside Buffer (TLB) entries to avoid TLB flushes during context switches, thereby sharing the TLB among multiple address spaces. While tagged TLBs are expected to improve the performance of virtualized workloads, a systematic evaluation of this improvement, its dependence on TLB and workload related factors and the performance implications of the contention arising from TLB sharing are yet to be investigated. This paper undertakes these investigations using a simulation-driven approach. We develop a simulation model for the tagged TLB and integrate it into a full-system simulation framework. Using this model, we show that the performance impact of using tagged TLBs ranges from 1% to 25% and is highly dependent on the size of the TLB, the TLB miss penalty and the nature of the workload and the type of tag used. The performance of consolidated workloads is also simulated and the observations from these simulations are used to highlight the performance variation due to resource contention in the shared TLB. Isolating the TLB behavior of one application in a consolidated workload from these variations due to the TLB contention by means of a static TLB usage control scheme is also explored. Furthermore, we show that the performance improvement due to tagged TLBs can be further increased by 1.4X for selected high-priority applications, by restricting the TLB usage of other low-priority workloads, in a consolidated workload scenario.

This paper proposes and evaluates Self-Organizing Latency-Aware Resource Ensemble (SOLARE), a peer-to-peer self-organizing and self-managing cluster system based upon network coordinates and utility functions. In contrast to previous works, SOLARE is a fully decentralized clustering algorithm without any central units such as servers, super peers, cluster heads or landmarks. Furthermore, SOLARE allows for adaptability to dynamic network changes by monitoring the utility of a cluster and migrating nodes to other higher-utility clusters when the utility of an existing cluster is low. Quantitative, simulation-driven evaluations show that SOLARE is able to satisfy user demands expressed by utility functions that integrate system parameters in terms of intra cluster latencies and the number of cluster members. Also, we verify the ability of SOLARE to adapt to dynamic network changes through simulation based experiments that consider the number of nodes which migrate into another cluster and average utility value as nodes join SOLARE.

The emergence of the TV channels number and the appearance of the Internet led to an exponential growth of the audiovisual documents. Several works were proposed in the literature for automatic video segmentation. However, the effectiveness of these works depends on video type. So, for a better quality of the segmentation, it is necessary to consider a priori knowledge concerning video types. Besides, TV channels use a set of rules during the production and the streaming of their programs such as the respect of the graphic charter, the recurring of studios. The exploitation of these rules, as a priori knowledge for the temporal and/or semantic structuring of the video documents, would be then advantageous for the quality of the indexing and the performance of the multimedia systems. In this context, we propose a method for the extraction and the formalization of descriptors based on a priori knowledge in order to conceive a video grammar model. This model will be used thereafter for a multitude of interesting applications like automatic structuring of TV streams or TV news segmentation. © 2010 IEEE.

Language modeling approach plays an important role in many areas of natural language processing including speech recognition, machine translation, and information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a contribution for conceptual indexing of medical articles by using the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) thesaurus, then we propose a tool for indexing medical articles called SIMA (System of Indexing Medical Articles) which uses a language model to extract the MeSH descriptors representing the document. To assess the relevance of a document to a MeSH descriptor, we estimate the probability that the MeSH descriptor would have been generated by language model of this document.

Voluntary computing systems or Desktop Grids (DGs) en- able sharing of commodity computing resources across the globe and have gained tremendous popularity among sci- entific research communities. Data management is one of the major challenges of adopting the Voluntary Comput- ing paradigm for large data-intensive applications. To date, middleware for supporting such applications either lacks an eficient cooperative data distribution scheme or cannot eas- ily accommodate existing data-intensive applications due to the requirement for using middleware-specific APIs. To address this challenge, in this paper we introduce Gator- Share, a data management framework that ofiers a file sys- tem interface and an extensible architecture designed to sup- port multiple data transfer protocols, including BitTorrent, based on which we implement a cooperative data distribu- tion service for DGs. It eases the integration with Desktop Grids and enables high-throughput data management for unmodified data-intensive applications. To improve the per- formance of BitTorrent in Desktop Grids, we have enhanced BitTorrent by making it fully decentralized and capable of supporting partial file downloading in an on-demand fash- ion. To justify this approach we present a quantitative evalua- tion of the framework in terms of data distribution eficiency. Experimental results show that the framework significantly improves the data dissemination performance for unmod- ified data-intensive applications compared to a traditional client/server architecture. Archer is a simulation environment and computing resource for research in the field of computer architecture. Archer facilitates the creation of an on-demand computing grid, the deployment of simulation tools on this grid and the batch-scheduling of large-scale simulation jobs on this grid. These features enable the use of Archer for simulation-based research as well as dissemination of tools and results among multiple research groups. This paper overviews and reports our experience in the use of Archer for collaborative research and for education. © 2010 IEEE.

The Web evolves to contents integrating increasingly rich and varied media reached using very diverse accessAA,A device. This environment very heterogeneous requires that multimedia information sent by the server is adapted to the precise conditions of their use. To answer this adaptation, a set of methods, languages and architectures were developed. This article is a contribution in this direction. In this work, we present a generator of the adaptable Web applications (AWA). An experimental study of the generator was undertaken on various devices of access (PC, PDA, mobile telephone.). The results obtained were evaluated by a study of the performances carried out to test the effectiveness of generator (rate of satisfaction of the users, profit in memory capacity, execution time, etc).

Connectivity constraints due to Internet route outages and symmetric NATs create situations when direct communication is not possible between nodes in P2P deployments, often leading to high latency between high-traffic nodes. In such cases, it is possible to reduce end-to-end latency by routing their communication through another node in the P2P system that is selected based on its Internet latencies to end-nodes. In this paper, we present and compare two decentralized algorithms for discovering low-latency proxy nodes between high-traffic nodes: (1) selecting a node with least Internet latency from the set of randomly-chosen neighbors to which one of the end-nodes is directly connected, and (2) discovery using latency estimates based on network coordinates. We evaluate these techniques in context of IP-over-P2P virtual networks through experiments on realistic wide-area testbeds. Our results indicate that in a network with over 400 nodes on PlanetLab, both the techniques select proxies such that the median penalties over the global optimal are within 16% and 21%, respectively, when all nodes are able to serve as proxies. We also investigate scenarios where subsets of nodes have connectivity constraints preventing them from serving as proxies.© 2010 IEEE.
