With the augmentation of traffic exponentially, we observe that traffic congestion does not guarantee road safety or enhance the driving experience. In the recent past, Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV), a social network paradigm permits social relationships among every vehicle in the network or with any road infrastructure to render a radically useful environment. SIoV is beneficial for the drivers, in improving road safety, avoiding mishaps, and providing a friendly-driving experience. In this paper, we propose a traffic scheduling algorithm to gain the maximum throughput for the flow of vehicles at a road intersection with the formation of social relationships among the vehicles and with the Road Side Units (RSUs). The algorithm estimates the flow rate of vehicles for lanes at the intersections exploiting the volume of traffic moving through the given road. A condition matrix is designed for the consistent movement of traffic considering different routes on the road segments. Social relationships are devised on various aspects of travel needs for a safe, agile, and better driving experience. Simulation results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme with high traffic throughput, service rate and reduce the total travelling time, delay time, and average waiting time in comparison with Dynamic Throughput Maximization Framework and Adaptive Traffic Control Algorithm. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

The objective of this study was to assess the viability of establishing an interactive Virtual National Library of Medicine (VNL-M). This research proposes a solution that leverages machine learning algorithms and cloud computing technologies, including advanced techniques such as Hadoop, MapReduce, and Cascading, to virtualize a significant number of medical manuscripts from the National Library of Tunisia. The proposed solution has two phases: •The first presents a hybrid (KNN/SVM) approach for an optical character recognition (OCR) system. Because this technology necessitates high bandwidth and computational capacity, spreading it via distributed architecture or platforms may be a viable alternative for improving performance. •The second entails considering cloud computing as an infrastructure (IaaS) to deploy virtualization techniques for the National Library of Tunisia's “medicine and health” subject area, which belongs to the “natural sciences and mathematics” class in the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. Furthermore, Cloud storing as a Service (SaaS) is employed for the storing and retrieval of enormous amounts of medical manuscript information. The proposed solution was evaluated by conducting experiments using S3 and Amazon EC2 Elstic Map Reduce with an interesting-scale dataset from a database of manuscript heritage. Lastly, the VNL-M is published as a Web service (VNL-Mweb Service).

Efficient Low-Resolution Face Recognition via Bridge Distillation

Face recognition in the wild is now advancing towards light-weight models, fast inference speed and resolution-adapted capability. In this paper, we propose a bridge distillation approach to turn a complex face model pretrained on private high-resolution faces into a light-weight one for low-resolution face recognition. In our approach, such a cross-dataset resolution-adapted knowledge transfer problem is solved via two-step distillation. In the first step, we conduct cross-dataset distillation to transfer the prior knowledge from private high-resolution faces to public high-resolution faces and generate compact and discriminative features. In the second step, the resolution-adapted distillation is conducted to further transfer the prior knowledge to synthetic low-resolution faces via multi-task learning. By learning low-resolution face representations and mimicking the adapted high-resolution knowledge, a light-weight student model can be constructed with high efficiency and promising accuracy in recognizing low-resolution faces. Experimental results show that the student model performs impressively in recognizing low-resolution faces with only 0.21M parameters and 0.057MB memory. Meanwhile, its speed reaches up to 14,705, 934 and 763 faces per second on GPU, CPU and mobile phone, respectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this article, we design the distributed pinning controllers to globally stabilize a Boolean network (BN), specially a sparsely connected large-scale one, towards a preassigned subset of state space through the node-to-node message exchange. Given an appointed state set, system nodes are partitioned into two disjoint parts, which respectively gather the nodes whose states are fixed or arbitrary with respect to the given state set. With such node division, three parts of pinned nodes are selected and the state feedback controllers are accordingly designed such that the resulting BN satisfies three conditions: the states of the other nodes cannot affect the nodal dynamics of fixed-state nodes, the subgraph of network structure induced by the fixed-state nodes is acyclic, and the steady state of the subnetwork induced by the fixed-state nodes lies in the state set given beforehand. If the BN after control is acyclic, the stabilizing time is revealed to be no more than the length of the longest path in the current network structure plus one. This enables us to further design the pinning controllers with the constraint of stabilizing time. Noting that the overall procedure runs in an exponentially increasing time with respect to the largest number of functional variables in the dynamics of pinned nodes, the sparsely-connected large-scale BNs can be well addressed in a reasonable amount of time. Finally, we demonstrate the applications of our theoretical results in a T-LGL survival signal network with 29 nodes and T-cell receptor signaling network with 90 nodes. In this paper, the problem of vehicle service mode selection (sensing, communication, or both) and vehicle connections within terahertz (THz) enabled joint sensing and communications over vehicular networks is studied. The considered network consists of several service provider vehicles (SPVs) that can provide: 1) only sensing service, 2) only communication service, and 3) both services, sensing service request vehicles, and communication service request vehicles. Based on the vehicle network topology and their service accessibility, SPVs strategically select service request vehicles to provide sensing, communication, or both services. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, aiming to maximize the number of successfully served vehicles by jointly determining the service mode of each SPV and its associated vehicles. To solve this problem, we propose a dynamic graph neural network (GNN) model that selects appropriate graph information aggregation functions according to the vehicle network topology, thus extracting more vehicle network information compared to traditional static GNNs that use fixed aggregation functions for different vehicle network topologies. Using the extracted vehicle network information, the service mode of each SPV and its served service request vehicles will be determined. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic GNN based method can improve the number of successfully served vehicles by up to 17% and 28% compared to a GNN based algorithm with a fixed neural network model and a conventional optimization algorithm without using GNNs. With the emergence of communication services with stringent requirements such as autonomous driving or on-flight Internet, the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network is envisaged to become an enabling technology for future transportation systems. In this paper, two ways of interactions between 6G networks and transportation are extensively investigated. On one hand, the new usage scenarios and capabilities of 6G over existing cellular networks are firstly highlighted. Then, its potential in seamless and ubiquitous connectivity across the heterogeneous space-air-ground transportation systems is demonstrated, where railways, airplanes, high-altitude platforms and satellites are investigated. On the other hand, we reveal that the introduction of 6G guarantees a more intelligent, efficient and secure transportation system. Specifically, technical analysis on how 6G can empower future transportation is provided, based on the latest research and standardization progresses in localization, integrated sensing and communications, and security. The technical challenges and insights for a road ahead are also summarized for possible inspirations on 6G enabled advanced transportation. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Recent advancements in feature selection (FS) optimization algorithms have influenced the field of epileptic seizure classification. However, integrating these optimization algorithms into machine learning (ML) models often creates time complexity, limiting their clinical deployment. To address this issue, we propose an innovative adaptive stepwise FS method tailored for epileptic seizure detection (ESD). First, a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was applied to the preprocessed signal to get three levels of the db4 wavelet family within the frequency range pertinent to epileptic seizure classification. Linear and nonlinear features are then extracted from each level of the DWT. The selected features are initially ranked using the minimum relevance, maximum redundancy (mRMR) FS technique. After that, a stepwise FS approach was applied to the ranked features to optimize the performance of Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. The experiment was performed on a publicly accessible CHB-MIT dataset in a patient-independent approach. The model's performance was assessed using accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. The results show an improved performance of the ML models with the integration of stepwise algorithm into the mRMR technique. Among the classifiers, RF exhibited superior performance with accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 87.69%, 91.53%, and 83.86%, respectively, when 12 features were selected. Our proposed stepwise feature selection method (PSFS) performs similarly to generalize forward feature selection (GFFS), with an average accuracy of 88.37% and 88.57%, respectively across selected features with less computation. This makes PSFS a very efficient and effective FS in epileptic seizure classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Indoor positioning is a thriving research area, which is slowly gaining market momentum. Its applications are mostly customized, ad hoc installations;ubiquitous applications analogous to Global Navigation Satellite System for outdoors are not available because of the lack of generic platforms, widely accepted standards and interoperability protocols. In this context, the indoor positioning and indoor navigation (IPIN) competition is the only long-term, technically sound initiative to monitor the state of the art of real systems by measuring their performance in a realistic environment. Most competing systems are pedestrian-oriented and based on the use of smartphones, but several competing tracks were set up, enabling comparison of an array of technologies. The two IPIN competitions described here include only off-site tracks. In contrast with on-site tracks where competitors bring their systems on-site - which were impossible to organize during 2021 and 2022 - in off-site tracks competitors download prerecorded data from multiple sensors and process them using the EvaalAPI, a real-time, web-based emulation interface. As usual with IPIN competitions, tracks were compliant with the EvAAL framework, ensuring consistency of the measurement procedure and reliability of results. The main contribution of this work is to show a compilation of possible indoor positioning scenarios and different indoor positioning solutions to the same problem. © 2023 CCBY.
