With the augmentation of traffic exponentially, we observe that traffic congestion does not guarantee road safety or enhance the driving experience. In the recent past, Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV), a social network paradigm permits social relationships among every vehicle in the network or with any road infrastructure to render a radically useful environment. SIoV is beneficial for the drivers, in improving road safety, avoiding mishaps, and providing a friendly-driving experience. In this paper, we propose a traffic scheduling algorithm to gain the maximum throughput for the flow of vehicles at a road intersection with the formation of social relationships among the vehicles and with the Road Side Units (RSUs). The algorithm estimates the flow rate of vehicles for lanes at the intersections exploiting the volume of traffic moving through the given road. A condition matrix is designed for the consistent movement of traffic considering different routes on the road segments. Social relationships are devised on various aspects of travel needs for a safe, agile, and better driving experience. Simulation results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme with high traffic throughput, service rate and reduce the total travelling time, delay time, and average waiting time in comparison with Dynamic Throughput Maximization Framework and Adaptive Traffic Control Algorithm. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

The WiFi backscatter communications offer ultralow power and ubiquitous connections for IoT systems. Caused by the intermittent-nature of the WiFi traffics, state-of-the-art WiFi backscatter communications are not reliable for backscatter link or simple for the tag to do the adaptive transmission. In order to build reliable WiFi backscatter communications, we present GuardRider, a WiFi backscatter system that enables backscatter communications to improve the quality of service (QoS). The key contribution of GuardRider is an optimization algorithm of designing RS codes to follow the statistical knowledge of WiFi traffics and adjust backscatter transmission. With GuardRider, the reliable baskscatter link is guaranteed and a backscatter tag is able to adaptively transmit information without heavily listening to the excitation channel, by taking QoS into account. We built a hardware prototype of GuardRider using a customized tag with FPGA implementation. Both the simulations and field experiments verify that GuardRider could achieve notably gains in bit error rate and frame error rate, which are a hundredfold reduction in simulations and around 99% in filed experiments. Our system is able to achieve around 700 kbps throughput.

Federated learning (FL) provides a privacy-aware distributed learning framework using private data belonging to multiple users (or clients). Often the data is generated continuously by the sensors deployed by different clients and is increasingly multimodal. However, the data is invariably imbalanced across different modalities, and certain modalities may even be missing from some clients for certain periods due to sensor failure or unavailability. Furthermore, the available data across clients may not be identically distributed (non-IID). Non-IID data is already known to be a problem with FL, and incomplete modalities could worsen the results even further. Effectively fusing multimodal data with incompleteness and training a high-accuracy global model is still a challenging problem. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel framework called MFedNI that extracts cross-modal temporal features and adaptively adjusts the weights of each modality to mitigate the effect of modal incompleteness. The prototype contrastive learning (PCL)-based feature alignment method further improves the consistency of feature representations across clients. We evaluated MFedNI using two multimodal datasets, HAR and DEAP with different levels of incompleteness. The results demonstrate that MFedNI outperforms other approaches and can train highly accurate models on datasets comprising non-IID multimodal data with incompleteness.

Typhoons pose significant threats to coastal and inland regions,with their impacts exacerbated by climate change and population growth [1]. Recent studies have shown increased frequency of powerful storms, slower translation speeds, northward shifts in the Western North Pacific (WNP) basin, and a near tripling of global exposure to typhoons since 1970 [1–4]. These changes present new challenges for forecasters and researchers, particularly in predicting impacts on inland and high-latitude populations lacking prior exposure or resilience to typhoon effects.

Speaker recognition technology has been widely used in home automation recently, which can provide identification for the user efficiently. However, speaker recognition technology brings security risks as well as convenience, especially the privacy disclosure of the user's voiceprint templates. This paper proposes an efficient and privacy-preserving speaker verification scheme for home automation devices, named SEASON. We modify the high-accuracy deepspeaker framework in terms of privacy, based on residual network. With SEASON, users can access the home automation devices securely. Detailed security analysis shows that SEASON can actually resist various security threats. We implement SEASON with real datasets and 48 real records from four testers. Experiments reveal that SEASON can achieve efficient and accurate verification.

With the spread of online social media websites, a huge amount of online content is continuously provided. However, some contents gain an important attention from users while other contents are completely ignored. This highlights the analysis of popularity relative to different social content. The popularity is expressed through measures and features that act as factors expressing and influencing the popularity. Those features vary from an online social media website to another as it depends on the type of social entity. This paper tries to create a normalized view of the popularity metrics independent of the online social media and in relation with specific social entities that are user and media content (i.e. text, image, and video). We propose a Service Provider Interface (SPI) as a contract between users. The SPI offers a variety of interfaces for implementing services related to the quantification of social entities popularity independently of the online social media they belong to. We propose a new gyroscope scheme with a two-mode squeezed coherent light as the source. With the intensity-difference measurement, the phase sensitivity is better than the shot-noise limit, and can saturate the Crámer-Rao Bound. Knowledge management process is a set of procedures and tools applied to facilitate capturing, sharing and effectively using knowledge. However, knowledge collected from organizations is generally expressed in various formalisms, therefore it is heterogeneous. Thus, a Knowledge Warehouse (KW), which is a solution for implementing all phases of the knowledge management process, should solve this structural heterogeneity before loading and storing knowledge. In this paper, we are interested in knowledge normalization. More accurately, we firstly introduce our proposed architecture for a KW, and then we present the MOT (Modeling with Object Types) language for knowledge representation. Since our objective is to transform heterogeneous knowledge into MOT, as a pivot model, we suggest a meta-model for the MOT and another for the explicit knowledge extracted through the association rules technique. Thereafter, we define eight transformation rules and an algorithm to transform an association rules model into the MOT model. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

A benchmark test of boson sampling on Tianhe-2 supercomputer

Boson sampling, thought to be intractable classically, can be solved by a quantum machine composed of merely generation, linear evolution and detection of single photons. Such an analog quantum computer for this specific problem provides a shortcut to boost the absolute computing power of quantum computers to beat classical ones. However, the capacity bound of classical computers for simulating boson sampling has not yet been identified. Here we simulate boson sampling on the Tianhe-2 supercomputer, which occupied the first place in the world ranking six times from 2013 to 2016. We computed the permanent of the largest matrix using up to 312 000 CPU cores of Tianhe-2, and inferred from the current most efficient permanent-computing algorithms that an upper bound on the performance of Tianhe-2 is one 50-photon sample per ～100 min. In addition, we found a precision issue with one of two permanent-computing algorithms.

Scholars worldwide leverage science gateways/virtual research environments (VREs) for a wide variety of research and education endeavors spanning diverse scientific fields. Evaluating the value of a given science gateway/VRE to its constituent community is critical in obtaining the financial and human resources necessary to sustain operations and increase adoption in the user community. In this article, we feature a variety of exemplar science gateways/VREs and detail how they define impact in terms of, for example, their purpose, operation principles, and size of user base. Further, the exemplars recognize that their science gateways/VREs will continuously evolve with technological advancements and standards in cloud computing platforms, web service architectures, data management tools and cybersecurity. Correspondingly, we present a number of technology advances that could be incorporated in next-generation science gateways/VREs to enhance their scope and scale of their operations for greater success/impact. The exemplars are selected from owners of science gateways in the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) clientele in the United States, and from the owners of VREs in the International Virtual Research Environment Interest Group (VRE-IG) of the Research Data Alliance. Thus, community-driven best practices and technology advances are compiled from diverse expert groups with an international perspective to envisage futuristic science gateway/VRE innovations. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
