Metabolites can serve as biomarkers and their identification has significant importance in the study of biochemical reaction and signalling networks. Incorporating metabolic and gene expression data to reveal biochemical networks is a considerable challenge, which attracts a lot of attention in recent research. In this paper, we propose a promising approach to identify metabolic biomarkers through integrating available biomedical data and disease-specific gene expression data. A Linear Programming (LP) based method is then utilized to determine flux variability intervals, therefore enabling the analysis of significant metabolic reactions. A statistical approach is also presented to uncover these metabolites. The identified metabolites are then verified by comparing with the results in the existing literature. The proposed approach here can also be applied to the discovery of potential novel biomarkers. © 2012 IEEE.

We study the asymptotic networking-theoretic multicast capacity bounds for random extended networks (REN) under Gaussian channel model, in which all wireless nodes are individually power-constrained. During the transmission, the power decays along path with attenuation exponent α >; 2. In REN, n nodes are randomly distributed in the square region of side length √n. There are n s randomly and independently chosen multicast sessions. Each multicast session has n d + 1 randomly chosen terminals, including one source and n d destinations. By effectively combining two types of routing and scheduling strategies, we analyze the asymptotic achievable throughput for all n s = ω(1) and nd. As a special case of our results, we show that for n s = Θ(n), the per-session multicast capacity for REN is of order Θ(1/√n d n) when nd = O(n/(log n) a+1 ) and is of order Θ(1/n d · (log n) -n/2 ) when n d = Ω(n/log n).

Language modeling approach plays an important role in many areas of natural language processing including speech recognition, machine translation, and information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a contribution for conceptual indexing of medical articles by using the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) thesaurus, then we propose a tool for indexing medical articles called SIMA (system of Indexing Medical Articles) which uses a language model to extract the MeSH descriptors representing the document. To assess the relevance of a document to a MeSH descriptor, we estimate the probability that the MeSH descriptor would have been generated by language model of this document.

The emergence of the TV channels number and the appearance of the Internet led to an exponential growth of the audiovisual documents. Several works were proposed in the literature for automatic video segmentation. However, the effectiveness of these works depends on video type. So, for a better quality of the segmentation, it is necessary to consider a priori knowledge concerning video types. Besides, TV channels use a set of rules during the production and the streaming of their programs such as the respect of the graphic charter, the recurring of studios. The exploitation of these rules, as a priori knowledge for the temporal and/or semantic structuring of the video documents, would be then advantageous for the quality of the indexing and the performance of the multimedia systems. In this context, we propose a method for the extraction and the formalization of descriptors based on a priori knowledge in order to conceive a video grammar model. This model will be used thereafter for a multitude of interesting applications like automatic structuring of TV streams or TV news segmentation. © 2010 IEEE.

The Web evolves to contents integrating increasingly rich and varied media reached using very diverse accessAA,A device. This environment very heterogeneous requires that multimedia information sent by the server is adapted to the precise conditions of their use. To answer this adaptation, a set of methods, languages and architectures were developed. This article is a contribution in this direction. In this work, we present a generator of the adaptable Web applications (AWA). An experimental study of the generator was undertaken on various devices of access (PC, PDA, mobile telephone.). The results obtained were evaluated by a study of the performances carried out to test the effectiveness of generator (rate of satisfaction of the users, profit in memory capacity, execution time, etc).

This paper studied a multiple-stage tandem production system. The control strategy is Hybrid which combines Kanban and CONWIP strategy together. The objective here is to evaluate the performance of the system by Markov chain models. We focus on Work-In-Process (WIP) and lost rate of the system. In general it is hard to obtain an exact analytical result of the system. Thus some approximation methods are proposed here. A simple situation is considered and formulated as a Markov chain process. Then we derive the steady-state probability of the system for two and three machines case, and obtain the WIP and the lost rate. The formulations proposed show the connection of control cards and performance measures. The method can extended to the case of multiple machines. We also present the results of a simulation study that tests the performance of our approach.

Hand localization and fingers features extraction: Application to digit recognition in sign language

We present in this paper an approach of hand gesture analysis that aims at recognizing a digit. The analysis is based on extracting a set of features from a hand image and then combining them by using an induction graph. The most important features we extract from each image are the fingers locations, their heights and the distance between each pair of fingers. Our approach consists of three steps: (i) Hand localization, (ii) fingers extraction and (iii) features identification and combination to digit recognition. Each input image is assumed to contain only one hand with black background, thus we apply a classifier based on one skin color to identify the skin pixels. In the finger extraction step, we attempt to remove all the hand components except the fingers, this process is based on the hand anatomy properties. The final step is based on histogram representation of the detected fingers which results in the features identification, which results in the digit recognition. The approach is invariant to scale, rotation and translation of the hand. Some experiments have been undertaken to show the effectivness of the proposed approach. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Text in videos contains much semantic information that can be used for video indexing and browsing. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal video-text localization and identification approach which proceeds in two main steps: text region localization and text region identification. In the first step we detect the significant appearance of the new objects in a frame by a split and merge processes applied on binarized edge frame pair differences. Detected objects are, a priori, considered as text. They are then filtered according to both local contrast and texture criteria in order to get the effective ones. The resulted text regions are identified based on a visual grammar descriptor containing a set of semantic text class regions characterized by visual features. A visual table of content is generated based on extracted text regions occurring within video sequence enriched by a semantic identification. The experimentation performed on a variety of video sequences shows the efficiency of our. Copyright 2009 ACM.
