Biological collections store information with broad societal and environmental impact. In the last 15 years, after worldwide investments and crowdsourcing efforts, 25% of the collected specimens have been digitized; a process that includes the imaging of text attached to specimens and subsequent extraction of information from the resulting image. This information extraction (IE) process is complex, thus slow and typically involving human tasks. We propose a hybrid (Human-Machine) information extraction model that efficiently uses resources of different cost (machines, volunteers and/or experts) and speeds up the biocollections' digitization process, while striving to maintain the same quality as human-only IE processes. In the proposed model, called SELFIE, self-aware IE processes determine whether their output quality is satisfactory. If the quality is unsatisfactory, additional or alternative processes that yield higher quality output at higher cost are triggered. The effectiveness of this model is demonstrated by three SELFIE workflows for the extraction of Darwin-core terms from specimens' images. Compared to the traditional human-driven IE approach, SELFIE workflows showed, on average, a reduction of 27% in the information-capture time and a decrease of 32% in the required number of humans and their associated cost, while the quality of the results was negligibly reduced by 0.27%.

We present an analysis method to search for exotic low-mass field (ELF) bursts generated during large energy astrophysical events such as supernovae, binary black hole or binary neutron star mergers, and fast radio bursts using the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME). In our model, the associated gravitational waves or electromagnetic signals herald the arrival of the ELF burst that interacts via coupling to the spin of fermions in the magnetometers. This enables GNOME to serve as a tool for multi-messenger astronomy. The algorithm employs a model-agnostic excess-power method to identify network-wide candidate events to be subjected to a model-dependent generalized likelihood-ratio test to determine their statistical significance. We perform the first search with this technique on GNOME data coincident with the binary black hole merger S200311bg detected by LIGO/Virgo on the 11th of March 2020 and find no significant events. We place the first lab-based limits on combinations of ELF production and coupling parameters. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Orthant-Wise Limited-memory QuasiNewton method(OWL-QN), based on the L-BFGS method, is an effective algorithm for solving the '1-regularized sparse learning problem. In order to deal with the '1-regularization, OWL-QN restrict the point to an orthant on which the quadratic model is valid and differentiable. In this paper, we propose an Inexact Orthant-Wise Limited-memory Quasi-Newton method(IOWLQN). This method, at every iteration, compute an approximate solution satisfied the inexactness conditions to estimate the exact solution. We give brief proof to the convergence and report the numerical results.

State-of-the-art language identification (LID) systems are based on an iVector feature extractor front-end followed by a multi-class recognition back-end. Identification accuracy degrades considerably when LID systems face open-set languages. As compared to in-set identification task, the open-set task is adequate to mimic the real challenge of language identification. In this paper, we propose an approach to the problem of out-of-set (OOS) data detection in the context of open-set language identification with zero-knowledge for OOS languages. The main feature of this study is the emphasis on the in-set (target) language identification, on the one hand, and on OOS language detection, on the other hand. Accordingly, we propose a deep SVM based LID back-end system to improve the target languages identification. Along with that, we define three OOS thresholding formulations. These formulations are used to decide whether the speech segment is a target or OOS language. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the deep SVM back-end system as compared to state-of-the-art techniques. Besides that, the thresholding functions perfectly detect and reject the OOS data. A relative decrease of 6% in Equal Error Rate (EER) is reported over classical OOS detection methods, in discriminating target and OOS languages.
