This paper presents an intelligent system for monitoring energy usage in smart buildings. It functions as a bridge between the smart grid and smart buildings. A web-based platform is designed to monitor sensor data and track power consumption on the grid. AI technology provides tips for energy conservation based on factors such as power usage patterns and weather conditions. The adaptability of our approach allows for the tuning of automated protocols based on evolving power usage patterns and grid conditions. Data is transmitted between the client devices and the central server via a Zigbee network organized in a star formation, allowing for mutual communication. Our implementation results in the improvement of the overall energy efficiency of supported infrastructure while ensuring continuous and optimized operation in case of a bulk grid blackout.

Safety in train platforms is a common concern in railway systems around the world. There are grave risks associated with the tracks and the crowds that often end up in injuries or deaths. Traditional approaches for ensuring safety in train transport networks rely on passive closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitorization that needs constant human attention. This paper proposes an AI-based alternative for detecting anomalies in surveillance videos, that is more efficient and cost-effective than traditional methods. Through Video Instance Segmentation (VIS), this work detects common risks such as overcrowding on the platform, people or objects standing on the edge of the platform, individuals or objects falling onto the tracks, the presence of firearms, and the presence of unattended baggage. The proposed algorithm combines state-of-the-art models like YOLOv8, ByteTrack, and Segment Anything Model (SAM) to classify, track, and segment object detections respectively. Additionally, this paper presents a custom-trained YOLOv8 model for gun detection. The results show that the system can successfully analyze video, create surveillance annotations, detect hazardous situations to alert authorities, and help prevent accidents and incidents on train platforms.

Predicting absolute scores is the most common speech-emotion recognition (SER) task when predicting emotional attributes (i.e., valence, arousal, and dominance). However, studies have shown that emotion has an ordinal nature where it is more reliable to establish a preference between speech samples (e.g., one sample is more positive than the other). This paper pursues a novel direction to combine absolute and relative learning formulations for SER. The proposed multitask formulation can simultaneously estimate preference between speech samples and predict their absolute score, providing a flexible tool to analyze emotional content in speech. Both tasks mutually complement each other, allowing the model to outperform SER systems that are exclusively trained to either predict absolute scores or estimate preferences. The multitask weights can be set according to the intended applications, prioritizing one task while slightly compromising the performance of the other task.

In this work, we propose a method for tracking multiple extended targets or unresolvable group targets in clutter environment. Firstly, based on the Random Matrix Model (RMM), the joint state of the target is modeled as the Gamma Gaussian Inverse Wishart (GGIW) distribution. Considering the uncertainty of measurement origin caused by the clutters, we adopt the idea of probabilistic data association and describe the joint association event as an unknown parameter in the joint prior distribution. Then the Variational Bayesian Inference (VBI) is employed to approximately solve the non-analytical posterior distribution. Furthermore, to ensure the practicability of the proposed method, we further provide two potential lightweight schemes to reduce its computational complexity. One of them is based on clustering, which effectively prunes the joint association events. The other is a simplification of the variational posterior through marginal association probabilities. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation and real data experiments, and we show that the proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and adaptability. Because of rapid growth of multimedia data over the Internet, the infobesity has been emerging in recent years. Many recommender systems (RSs) have been proposed using a variety of techniques, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical analysis, and data mining. Nowadays, E-commerce companies such as Amazon, eBay, Netflix, etc. have applied RSs conveniently to provide better customer services than before by enabling customized multimedia-content recommendations. It is well known that classical RSs are almost all based on the user-item attribute matrices. However, this two-fold user-item relationship should be extended to the emerging many-fold relationship among an arbitrary number of attribute groups so that the corresponding new RSs may lead to better performances. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel personalized multimedia recommender system (PMRS) according to our proposed new parallel higher-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (PHOTSVD) algorithm. This PHOTSVD algorithm is capable of accommodating an arbitrary number of entities such as social-media channels, users, queries, webpages, etc. in a robust RS. Furthermore, we also investigate the cold start and data bias problems critical to RSs. Finally, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and three other existing tensor-based RSs over realworld data with respect to the well-adopted metric, namely normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). Our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other three existing tensor-based RSs in terms of NRMSE. © 1963-12012 IEEE.

This paper models a platooning system consisting of trucks and a third-party service provider (TPSP), which performs platoon coordination, distributes the platooning profit in platoons, and charges trucks in exchange for the services. Government subsidies used to incentivize platooning are also considered. We propose a pricing rule for the TPSP, which keeps part of the platooning profit including the subsidy each time a platoon is formed. In addition, a platoon coordination solution based on the distributed model predictive control (MPC) is proposed, in which the pricing rule under government subsidies is integrated. We perform a realistic simulation over the Swedish road network to evaluate the impact of the pricing rule and subsidies on the achieved profits and fuel savings. Our results show that subsidies are an effective mean to boost fuel savings from platooning. Moreover, the simulation study indicates that high pricing corresponds to a low platooning rate of the system, as trucks' incentives for platooning decrease. © 2023 The Authors. This research presents a robust chirplet decomposition algorithm designed for hardware implementation, specifically aimed at enhancing ultrasonic nondestructive testing and imaging. The study focuses on developing an algorithm and an FPGA hardware module that enable real-time chirplet decomposition, emphasizing increased processing speed while maintaining echo accuracy. A novel Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE)-based parameter estimation algorithm was developed to improve chirplet parameter estimation, enhancing both accuracy and convergence speed. This high-performance platform enables real-time ultrasonic imaging for flaw detection in steel specimens, demonstrating significant improvements in defect detection and characterization. The resultant platform has been tested against four alternative platforms to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing execution times. Remarkably, when compared to similar embedded platforms, this speed-optimized platform achieves a 150-fold increase in processing speed, surpassing the next fastest embedded platform, the Teensy 4.0, which includes a Cortex-M7 processor operating at 600MHz. Additionally, when compared to an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, this platform operates 6.6 times faster.

Although the surveillance industry is growing due to increased concerns for public safety, traditional surveillance systems can be ineffective due to fixed positions, limited coverage, and the need for human operation. This paper proposes an edge computing surveillance system that can detect, track, and identify human presence using AI software. The system includes a video camera integrated into a structure that allows pan and tilt movements and a processing unit that performs all computations locally. The system can operate in two different modes, manual and automatic, and it can be controlled from a user-friendly web application. The manual mode allows the user to control the camera remotely, adjusting the position with buttons and handling additional functionalities like zoom. On the other hand, in automatic mode, the system detects people and identifies if they are an unknown subject or not. Identifications are recorded in an online log and the system takes pictures of unknown people to recognize recurrent intruders.

Electromagnetic Inverse Scattering Problems (EISP) have gained wide applications in computational imaging. By solving EISP, the internal relative permittivity of the scatterer can be non-invasively determined based on the scattered electromagnetic fields. Despite previous efforts to address EISP, achieving better solutions to this problem has remained elusive, due to the challenges posed by inversion and discretization. This paper tackles those challenges in EISP via an implicit approach. By representing the scatterer’s relative permittivity as a continuous implicit representation, our method is able to address the low-resolution problems arising from discretization. Further, optimizing this implicit representation within a forward framework allows us to conveniently circumvent the challenges posed by inverse estimation. Our approach outperforms existing methods on standard benchmark datasets. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) measurements are essential for forest management and carbon absorption estimation in environmental challenges. Traditional DBH measurements require more precision and efficiency, especially in inaccessible forests. Existing methods, including manual measurement or remote sensing, struggle with precision in low-intensity point cloud areas. Our technique solves these limitations by analyzing the entire tree stem by the process, including convex hull construction and advanced noise reduction using real-world datasets. It has reduced the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) to 0.020, or 92.25% improvement, and the bias has decreased to -0.008. These enhancements highlight the accuracy and reliability of our DBH estimation technique.
