This paper introduces ArtHistorian, a content-based classification and indexing system that represents the visual content of art paintings by a six-dimensional feature set. The introduced feature set is robust to scale changes and can handle variations in lighting conditions. A nonlinear SVM classifier included in the system learns the characteristics of fundamental art movements and painting styles. A hybrid classifier that combines PCA representation of paintings with the SVM classification is also exploited. It is shown that ArtHistorian is capable of classifying art paintings based on painters as well as art movements with an accuracy of greater than 90% and its false alarm ratio is very small. The developed system enables the user to run content-based queries and to retrieve from painting databases created in XML format.

This paper outlines the automatic extraction of features of paintings' art movements such as classicism, impressionism and cubism;and introduces a system developed for the classification and indexing of paintings based on their art movements. A six dimensional feature set is proposed for the representation of content and it is shown that the feature set enables to highlight art movements efficiently. In the classifier design, statistical pattern recognition approach is exploited and Bayesian, k-NN and SVM classifiers are employed. A classification accuracy of over 90% is achieved with very small false alarm ratios while the lowest performance is obtained by the k-NN. System also offers a quick query based database search by indexing the paintings with their six dimensional feature vectors, and provides an applicable program for museums and exhibition centres. © 2004 EUSIPCO.

This paper proposes a blind audio watermark extraction technique that allows performing watermark decoding while installing data synchronization. The proposed decoding algorithm employs correlation techniques supported by a wavelet denoising process, thus improves the decoding performance significantly. A data adaptive nonlinear MPEG Layer 1 Model 1 compatible watermark encoder is designed for watermark embedding. A channel encoder is also included into the system to take the advantage of error correction. The method does not require the original audio for decoding and it is robust to channel noise, filtering as well as stereo-to-mono conversions. It allows working at very low watermark-to-signal ratios thus preserves inaudibility.

This paper proposes an audio watermark extraction technique which adopts independent component analysis (ICA) for blind watermark decoding. Unlike the existing work, our method allows to combine data synchronization and watermark decoding into one optimization procedure, thus robust to transmission over different channels. Watermark encoder is designed as a nonlinear data embedding machine which is compatible to MPEG Layer 1 Model 1. It is shown that the proposed ICA based watermark decoding scheme allows decoding watermark info accurately even though the watermark to signal ratio is less than -20 dB. The method is robust to stereo-to-mono conversions and performs very well when the channel noise level is high.

Correct segmentation of handwritten Chinese characters is crucial to the successful recognition. However, because of the many difficulties involved, little work has been done in this area. In this paper, a two-stage approach is addressed to segment unconstrained handwritten Chinese character strings. A string is first coarsely segmented according to the background skeleton and vertical projection after a proper image preprocessing. At the fine segmentation stage that follows, the strokes that may contain segmentation points are first identified. The feature points are then extracted from candidate strokes and taken as segmentation point candidates through each of which a segmentation path may be formed. Geometric features are extracted and fuzzy decision rules learned from examples are used to evaluate the segmentation paths. By using this two-stage segmentation approach, we can achieve both good performance and efficiency in segmenting unconstrained handwritten Chinese characters.

It has been shown that the branch and bound technique is effective for the design of finite wordlength optimal digital filters. This technique is however expensive in computing time. In this paper, we present a robust branch and bound branching strategy named Sequential and Progressive Search, improving the design of filters on a large wordlength processor in a reasonable computing cost. The details of the algorithm and many examples are given and compared to the other methods. © 2000 EUSIPCO.

To improve the reliability of a template-matching classifier for recognizing connected handwritten characters, we present an evolutionary algorithm to optimize handwritten numeral templates represented by rational B-spline surfaces of character pixel-boundary distance maps (PBDMs). Initial templates are extracted by training a feed-forward neural network. In simulation, 1, 000 handwritten numeral templates (100 templates for each class) were extracted and optimized using 10, 426 training samples (isolated numerals from NIST Special Database 3). A tern plate-matching classifier using these 1, 000 optimized templates rejected 90.7% of nonnumeral patterns (not included in the training set) while achieving a correct classification rate of 96.4% on independent isolated numerals. © Fuji Technology Press Ltd. We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.

We would like to welcome you to the proceedings of MRCS 2006, Workshop on multimedia Content Representation, Classi?cation and Security, held Sept- ber 11–13, 2006, in Istanbul, Turkey. The goal of MRCS 2006 was to provide an erudite but friendly forum where academic and industrial researchers could interact, discuss emerging multimedia techniques and assess the signi?cance of content representation and security techniques within their problem domains. We received more than 190 submissions from 30 countries. All papers were subjected to thorough peer review. The ?nal decisions were based on the cri- cisms and recommendations of the reviewers and the relevance of papers to the goals of the conference. Only 52% of the papers submitted were accepted for inclusion in the program. In addition to the contributed papers, four distinguished researchers agreed to deliver keynote speeches, namely: – Ed Delp on multimedia security – Pierre Moulin on data hiding – John Smith on multimedia content-based indexing and search – Mar´ ?o A. T. Figueiredo on semi-supervised learning.
