In building fire evacuation, good guidance can speed up egress process and occupants may be injured due to lack of information and guidance. There are many studies on building egress systems, which use relevant information (e.g., fire condition and its evolution) to calculate and provide guidance to occupants. However, information used to generate guidance may be uncertain, and it is difficult to provide the guidance under uncertainty. How to provide effective guidance to occupants under uncertainty and how to evaluate the confidence of the guidance are critical issues. To describe the confidence of the guidance, the concept of "confidence intervals" is used. By comparing "confidence intervals" with a threshold, acceptable guidance is provided. Testing examples show that the confidence of the guidance can be evaluated and unacceptable guidance can be differentiated with the use of confidence intervals. © 2011 IEEE.

The notion of synergistic potential functions has been introduced recently in the literature and has been used as the basis for the design of hybrid feedback laws that achieve global asymptotic stabilization of a point on a compact manifold (without boundary) such as S~(1), S~(2), and SO(3). Here, synergistic potential functions are generalized--to synergistic Lyapunov functions--and are shown to be amenable to backstepping. In particular, if an affine control system admits a (weak) synergistic Lyapunov function and feedback pair then the system with an integrator added at the input also admits a synergistic Lyapunov and feedback pair. This fact enables "smoothing" hybrid feedbacks, or implementing them through a chain of integrators. In this way, hybrid control designed at a kinematic level can be redesigned for control through forces, torques, or even the derivative of these quantities. We demonstrate the backstepping procedure for attitude stabilization of a rigid body using a quaternion parametrization.

A passive universal image steganalysis method is proposed that is shown to be of higher detection accuracy than existing truly blind steganalysis methods including Farid's and the WAM. This is achieved by improving some weaknesses of Farid's steganalysis scheme in feature extraction, that is, instead of deriving an over-determined equation system for each sub band of the wavelet decomposition, the sub bands are divided into overlapping blocks and an over-determined equation system is constructed for each block. To guarantee the existence of finite answers, the over-determined equation systems are solved in a way different from Farid's by using Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse concept. Further improvement to the performance is achieved by adding diagonal directions and increasing the number of moments. The comparative evaluations confirm the superiority of the proposed method over prevalent blind steganalysis schemes.

A simple tuning method for second-order active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) that achieves high performance and good robustness for a wide range of processes is presented. ADRC is a novel control strategy whose exciting performance has been shown by literatures. The proposed method makes ADRC become easy to tune and more practical. Once the desired settling time is given, only one parameter need to be tuned during the design procedure, which can be found by monotonously increasing. Examples are given to show the effectiveness and flexibility of the method. Simulations demonstrate that second-order ADRC can handles processes with various characteristics, including low- and high-order, large dead time, non-minimum phase, unstable and distributed parameter systems.

The unit quaternion is a pervasive representation of rigid-body attitude used for the design and analysis of feedback control laws. Often, quaternion-based feedbacks require an additional mechanism that lifts a continuous attitude path to the unit quaternion space. When this mechanism is memoryless, it has a limited domain where it remains injective and leads to discontinuities when used globally. To remedy this limitation, we propose a hybrid-dynamic algorithm for lifting a continuous attitude path to the unit quaternion space. We show that this hybrid-dynamic mechanism allows us to directly translate quaternion-based controllers and their asymptotic stability properties (obtained in the unit-quaternion space) to the actual rigid-body-attitude space. We also show that when quaternion-based controllers are not designed to account for the double covering of the rigid-body-attitude space by a unit-quaternion parameterization, they can give rise to the unwinding phenomenon, which we characterize in terms of the projection of asymptotically stable sets.

This article explores, through a case study, measures of energy efficiency in data processing centers. An analysis of this case demonstrates how the design criteria could improve the rate of consumption in IT centers, which is currently the second most contaminating industry on the planet, and is the responsible for 2% of CO2 emissions, surpassed only by the aeronautical industry. The present and future situation of IT center energy consumption and associated environmental effects is analyzed, and also looks at how state-of-the-art technology, correctly implemented, could ensure significant rationalization of data processing center energy consumption. The article will examine optimization techniques, specific problems and case studies.

In automatic sleep stage classification, as in any other signal processing task involving the easily contaminated EEG signals, denoising constitutes a crucial pre-processing step that must be addressed before carrying out further analysis on the EEG signals. Discrete wavelet transform offers an effective solution for denoising nonstationary signals such as EEG due to its shrinkage property. In this paper, we explored the application of wavelet denoising method to EEG signals acquired during different sleep stages classified according to the RK rules, with the objective to identify suitable thresholding rules and threshold values. Preliminary results showed that the combination of soft thresholding rule applied to the Detailed wavelet coefficients with the Universal threshold value produced better performance measures such as a smaller Minimum Squared Error (MSE) and a larger signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Similarly improved results were obtained for Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4 and REM stage EEG signals using this combination. Such thresholding rule and values are equally well applicable to denoising EEG epochs acquired from deep sleep stages.

This paper presents a real-time force control strategy for a prosthetic hand. The proposed design is capable of decoding the prerecorded surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal as well as the sensory force feedback from the sensors to control the force of the prosthetic hand prototype. The input sEMG signal is preprocessed using a Half-Gaussian filter with optimized parameters and Chebyshev type II filter. Entropy of the sEMG signal is used as a threshold value to establish the correlation between the sEMG signal and the skeletal muscle force. A simple proportional integral controller along with a two-stage embedded design is used for the force control of the prosthetic hand. The results are transmitted to the computer through the universal asynchronous receiver/ transmitter (UART)interface of the proposed embedded design. The results demonstrate good performance in controlling the force of the prosthetic hand.

Sport video classification is an application of video analysis which can be useful in video indexing and retrieval. In this article, a new method for sport video classification using ensemble classifier is proposed. The proposed method uses 6 features: 3 dominant colors, dominant gray level, cut rate and motion rate. These features are classified by 4 simple classifiers in an ensemble classifier: Nearest Neighbor (NN), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Decision Tree (DT) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN). To combine the output of simple classifiers and make final decision, weighted majority vote is used while the weight of each simple classifier is equal to corresponding correct classification rate (CCR). Experimental result shows that the CCR of proposed system is 78.8%. In this experiment, 104 clips in 7 different sport classes are used: football, basketball, tennis, swimming, futsal, ski and box.

In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 81, 063837 (2010)], I proposed a quantum model of the cavity electro-optic modulator, which can coherently couple an optical cavity mode to a microwave resonator mode and enable quantum operations on the two modes, including laser cooling of the microwave resonator, electro-optic entanglement, and backaction-evading optical measurement of a microwave quadrature. In this sequel, I focus on the quantum input-output relations between traveling optical and microwave fields coupled to the cavity electro-optic modulator. With red-sideband optical pumping, the relations are shown to resemble those of a beam splitter for the traveling fields, so that in the ideal case of zero parasitic loss and critical coupling, microwave photons can be coherently up converted to “flying” optical photons with unit efficiency, and vice versa. With blue-sideband pumping, the modulator acts as a nondegenerate parametric amplifier, which can generate two-mode squeezing and hybrid entangled photon pairs at optical and microwave frequencies. These fundamental operations provide a potential bridge between circuit quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics.
