This paper contains portions of original text from the paper cited below. The original text was copied without attribution (including appropriate references to the original author(s) and/or paper title) and without permission. "Nonlinear Internal Model control for MISO Systems Based on Local Linear Neuro-Fuzzy Models" by A. Fink, O. Nelles and R. Isermann, in 15th IFAC World Congress, Barcelona, Spain, 2002. The internal model control (IMC) scheme has been widely applied in the field of process control. So far, IMC has been mainly applied to linear processes. This paper discusses the extension of the IMC scheme to nonlinear processes based on local linear models where the properties of linear design procedures can be exploited. The IMC scheme results in controllers that are comparable to conventional multi layer perceptron (MLP) networks. In practice, the tuning of conventional MLP based controllers can be very time-consuming whereas the IMC design procedure is very simple and reliable. The design effort of the IMC based on locally linear model tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm are discussed and the control results are compared by application to nonlinear control of an industrial-scale PH neutralization process. Simulation studies of a PH neutralization process confirm the excellent nonlinear modeling properties of the proposed locally linear network and illustrate the potential for set point tracking and disturbance rejection within an IMC framework.

Valuable medical information can be achieved by analysing shape and appearance of human chromosomes. Karyotype, an image of collection of all 23 pairs of human chromosomes, is usually used for this purpose. Making a Karyotype is hard and time consuming, encouraging experts in the image processing and machine vision field to work towards an automatic Karyotyping method. The first step in automation of this process is to define the geometric (morphologic) and intensity based features of the chromosome originating mostly from its banding pattern. As part of a complete project, which is defined to develop a new knowledge based classification technique for chromosomes, a number of new features in addition to the commonly used geometric and intensity based features, are introduced in this paper. Some of the features are computed using the so-called medial axis transform (MAT). For an accurate determination of most of these features it is necessary, however, to identify some key points or landmarks in the image (mostly over the MAT). This paper describes novel algorithms developed to locate such landmarks as centromere, end points of chromosome and two points defined as branching points on the chromosome axis. The algorithms have been tested on the real images supplied by the cytogenetic laboratory of Cancer Institute, University of Tehran. The automatically defined positions of the landmarks have been compared to those manually identified by an expert. In most of the cases the results were in complete agreement.

Planetary exploration missions and deep space probes require electrical power management and control-systems that are capable of efficient and reliable operation in very low temperature environments. Presently, spacecraft operating in the cold environment of deep space carry radioisotope heating units in order to maintain the surrounding temperature of the on-board electronics at approximately 20 °C. Electronics capable of operation at cryogenic temperatures will not only tolerate the hostile environment of deep space but also reduce system size and weight by eliminating or reducing the radioisotope heating units and their associate structures;thereby reducing system development as well as launch costs. In addition, power electronic circuits designed for operation at low temperatures are expected to result in more efficient systems than those at room temperature. This improvement results from better behavior and tolerance in the electrical and thermal properties of semiconductor and dielectric materials at low temperatures. The Low Temperature Electronics Program at the nasa Glenn Research center focuses on research and development of electrical components, circuits, and systems suitable for applications in the aerospace environment and deep space exploration missions. Research is being conducted on devices and systems for reliable use down to cryogenic temperatures (as low as -243 °C or 30 K). Some of the commercial-off-the-shelf as well as developed components that are being characterized includes passive and active devices and circuits. An overview of the nasa Glenn Research center Low Temperature Electronic Program will be presented in this paper. Selected data obtained through in-house components and circuits testing will also be discussed. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper develops an adaptive output feedback control scheme for a class of nonlinear systems with state-dependent nonlinearities in the presence of unknown actuator failures. A robust backstepping feedback control law is derived to effectively handle the state estimation error due to such uncertain nonlinearities. An adaptive actuator failure compensation scheme is designed to ensure closed-loop signal boundedness and desired output tracking performance. An application to controlling the angle of attack of a nonlinear aircraft model in the presence of elevator segment failures is studied and simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the adaptive actuator failure compensation design.

A hybrid phase modulated converter (HPMC) with current doubler rectification has superior soft switching characteristics, high efficiency, and low EMI as compared to a conventional phase modulated converter. It has essentially three modes of operation: (i) continuous conduction mode (CCM); (ii) continuous conduction mode with reversed inductor currents; and (iii) discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). There is never a discontinuity in conduction in the inductors and the definition of DCM is different in itself. In this paper, the various modes are defined, analyzed and design equations derived. The analyses are also verified with a 500 W peak current mode controlled prototype model, switched at 100 kHz and the results are presented. The soft switching behavior of the converter in this mode is also studied and is found to be advantageous.

In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive dynamic controller is designed for velocity and flux magnitude tracking of induction motors. The control design is a partial-state feedback design that utilizes rotor velocity and stator current measurements. Rotor position and flux measurements are not utilized for feedback. Further more, an adaptive approach is followed to compensate for uncertainty in the mechanical parameters (inertia, friction, and load torque) and the rotor resistance. The only information required about these parameters is a lower bound on the rotor resistance. The designed controller has dynamic order 12 and achieves asymptotic tracking of the flux magnitude trajectory. Under a persistency of excitation condition, asymptotic tracking of the flux magnitude trajectory is also obtained.

The single cell gel electrophoresis, called Comet Assay is a microelectrophoretic technique of direct visualization of DNA damage at the cell level. In the comet assay, the cells suspended in an agarose gel on a microscope slide are subjected to lysis, unwinding of DNA and electrophoresis. After staining with fluorescent DNA binding dye, cells with DNA damage display increased migration of genetic material from the cell nucleus. Under the influence of weak, static electric field, charged DNA migrates away from the nucleus forming a so called comet. The damage is quantified by measuring the amount of the genetic material, which migrates from the nucleus to form the comet tail. The foremost advantage of the comet assay is that it analyses individual cells, thus allowing the measurement of the heterogeneity of response within a cell population. 2D multiple scattering modeling of GHz waves propagating from a source within a loaded aircraft cavity is considered, with trivial computational effort. The periodic array of seats within the aircraft cavity can be readily modeled by longitudinal phase screens in the z-direction, while physical variations within a row can be modeled by a random refractive index with appropriate statistics. The effects of the scattering parameter /spl Gamma/ on the field intensity has been exhibited with strong scattering, leading to sharp, numerous and strong /spl delta/-function spikes as opposed to the low scattering limit in which the field intensities remain diffuse, broad and not as strong. This can have implications to the occurrence of hot spots within an aircraft cavity due to an electromagnetic source (e.g., PED) within the cavity.

Effective control of load swing in shipboard crane has been the subject of interest to both commercial and military applications. The difficulty of the control problem due to uncertainty in the nonlinear models of the crane, and the presence of numerous disturbance sources in the environment is well documented. Model predictive control (MPC) has been successfully applied in many real-world industrial applications due to its inherent robustness to modeling errors and the ability to explicitly include constraints in the problem formulation. This paper proposes a formulation that enables the use of a purely MPC-based technology for the control of load swing in shipboard cranes in real-time. We show that a decomposition of the crane model into linear state dynamics, and nonlinear static output mapping enables the use of the MPC approach in a computationally efficient way. We use our newly developed nonlinear solver to enhance the computational properties of the MPC-based approach. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first successful implementation of a purely MPC-based controller for the load swing in a shipboard crane. The solution presented in this paper is ideally suited for indirect adaptive control and hence suggests an exciting opportunity for a versatile controller in a difficult application.
