Due to illumination variability, the same object can appear dramatically different even when viewed in fixed pose. Consequently, an object recognition system must employ a representation that is either invariant to, or models this variability. This chapter presents an appearance-based method for modeling this variability. In particular, we prove that the set of n-pixel monochrome images of a convex object with a Lambertian reflectance function, illuminated by an arbitrary number of point light sources at infinity, forms a convex polyhedral cone in IRn and that the dimension of this illumination cone equals the number of distinct surface normals. For a non-convex object with a more general reflectance function, the set of images is also a convex cone. Geometric properties of these cones for monochrome and color cameras are considered. Here, present a method for constructing a cone representation from a small number of images when the surface is continuous, possibly non-convex, and Lambertian;this accounts for both attached and cast shadows. For a collection of objects, each object is represented by a cone, and recognition is performed through nearest neighbor classification by measuring the minimal distance of an image to each cone. We demonstrate the utility of this approach to the problem of face recognition (a class of non-convex and non-Lambertian objects with similar geometry). The method is tested on a database of 660 images of 10 faces, and the results exceed those of popular existing methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

The present work deals with the design and development of an optimal closed-loop three level DC-to-DC buck converter. The effect of phase shift on efficiency and voltage across the energy transfer capacitor of the power circuit has been investigated. A charge-pump controller has been added to a closed-loop system and the performance has been experimentally studied. Since all studies indicate an optimal phase shift of 180 degrees, a simple closed-loop system with a fixed phase of 180 degrees has been designed, fabricated and tested.

This paper surveys recent advances in communications that utilize soft computing approaches to phase synchronization. Soft computing, as opposed to hard computing, is a collection of complementary methodologies that act in producing the most desirable control, decision, or estimation strategies. Recently, the communications area has explored the use of the principal constituents of soft computing, namely, fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, for modeling, control, and most recently for the estimation of phase in phase-coherent communications. If the receiver in a digital communications system is phase-coherent as is often the case, phase synchronization is required. Synchronization thus requires estimation and/or control at the receiver of an unknown or random phase offset.

The eikonal equation and variants of it are of significant interest for problems in computer vision and image processing. It is the basis for continuous versions of mathematical morphology, stereo, shapefrom-shading and for recent dynamic theories of shape. Its numerical simulation can be delicate, owing to the formation of singularities in the evolving front, and is typically based on level set methods introduced by Osher and Sethian. However, there are more classical approaches rooted in Hamiltonian physics, which have received little consideration in the computer vision literature. Here the front is interpreted as minimizing a particular action functional. In this context, we introduce a new algorithm for simulating the eikonal equation, which offers a number of computational advantages over the earlier methods. In particular, the locus of shocks is computed in a robust and efficient manner. We illustrate the approach with several numerical examples. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

The traditional framework for discrete-event control is extended to include the case of control with active events, in which both the user and the environment have events that they can trigger. A variety of liveness and safety specifications can be considered within this extended framework. A synthesis algorithm of minimally restrictive controllers is outlined.

A large signal simulation for a distributed power supply system is presented in this paper. The system is composed of two parallel-connected switched-mode power factor correction (PFC) converters utilizing a central limit control technique. This technique allows one voltage loop compensator to be shared by all the PFC converters. The design of such a compensator is discussed and the system performances with regard to unequal cable resistances and load changes are reported. The resulting system features a universal input with a power factor greater than 0.98 and provides excellent current sharing among the converter modules.

Low-temperature operation of a closed loop three level buck DC-to-DC power converter with charge pump controller has been experimentally investigated. The power converter system has been designed and built with standard commercially available components. Performance characteristics such as efficiency and regulation are studied for different temperatures from 25/spl deg/C down to -184/spl deg/C. CMOSICs, MOSFET switches and ultrafast diodes prove to be suited to operate in a wide temperature range. The performance of the output filter inductor and capacitor does not change significantly at 77/spl deg/K compared to room temperature.

In this paper, we propose an robust controller design of rapid thermal processing (RTP) system using the structured uncertainty approach. Using the weighted mixed sensitivity function, we solve the robust stability problem against disturbance and temperature variation, and design a /spl mu/ controller using the curve fitting method against structured uncertainty. Finally, the simulation results are proposed to show the validity of the proposed method.

This paper describes the synthesis of robust and non-fragile H/sup /spl infin// state feedback controllers for linear systems with time delay and parameter uncertainties, and static state feedback controller with multiplicative uncertainty. The sufficient condition of controller existence, the design method of robust and non-fragile H/sup /spl infin// state feedback controller, and the measure of non-fragility in controller are presented. Also, using some changes of variables and Schur complements, the obtained sufficient condition can be rewritten as an linear matrix inequality form in terms of transformed variables. Therefore, the obtained robust and non-fragile H/sup /spl infin// controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed loop system in spite of controller gain variations within a degree.

This paper presents the problem of observer-based fuzzy H/sup /spl infin// control for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with time-varying delayed systems on the basis of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. First, we design a fuzzy observer such that destination error system is globally, exponentially stable. Next, we design a fuzzy H/sup /spl infin// controller such that the closed loop system is globally, exponentially stable and achieves L/sub 2/ gain performance. The fuzzy control systems utilize the concept of the so-called parallel distributed compensation. A sufficient condition for the existence of robust fuzzy H/sup /spl infin// controllers and observers are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The control gains can also be directly obtained from the LMI solutions.
