In this paper, we present a semi-automatic technique to quantize and to visualize myocardial perfusion defects volumetrically. This involves: (1) differentiating the myocardium from encroaching viscera, (2) determining the mass of myocardium, (3) locating and measuring the perfusion defects, and (4) graphically rendering them. First, to differentiate between myocardium and other thoracic structures, we introduce the concept of Maximum Intensity Surface Segmentation (MISS). By locating local maximums in our cardiac Single Photon Emission computerized Tomography (SPECT) image and connecting ones sufficiently close together, we generate the basic shape of the myocardium and the encroaching structures. Second, with the shape of the myocardium determined, we then measure the thickness at each point of the heart wall. Fitting bicubic splines to the measured myocardial thicknesses, we create smooth epicardial and endocardial boundaries for both normal and abnormal regions. Third, using a thresholding technique based on the maximal myocardial activity, we determine the abnormal regions. Finally, with the abnormal regions and the myocardial mass determined, we can calculate the abnormality's size as a percentage of the total myocardial mass. By providing quantitative measurements, our technique meets the physician's long standing need for a volumetric quantitation of the size of myocardial perfusion abnormalities. © 1994 SPIE. This paper presents a method for automatic detection of targets with nonlinear motion embedded in dynamic clutter. This is achieved via processing the targets' incoherent ISAR data that are less vulnerable to multiplicative noise (phase errors). It is shown that the incoherent ISAR signature of a target scene may be viewed as its baseband ISAR signature. Thus, the magnitude of an ISAR database that is severely contaminated with phase errors, i.e., incoherent ISAR data, may be used for ISAR detection of moving targets. Incoherent ISAR data in the fast-time and slow-time domain are transformed into another two-dimensional domain. The signature of a target in the transformed domain is shown to be localized based on its mid-point range and speed. This localized statistic is suitable for automatic, i.e., machine-based, detection of stationary as well as moving targets in the scene.< >

Microwave characteristics are reported for n- and p- MOS transistors fabricated with thin-film Silicon-on-Sapphire technology. The gates were defined with I-line optical lithography, and ranged down to 0.5 /spl mu/m (drawn dimension). The f/sub t/ values of the transistors reach 22 GHz for the n-channel structures and 21 GHz for the p-channel devices. The PMOS results are significantly higher than found with other Si or III-V technologies, and can potentially lead to high performance complementary microwave circuits. Small signal transistor models are similar to the ones for GaAs FETs. Dependence of model parameters on gate length were determined.< >

This paper presents an investigation of the misconvergence of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) for blind equalization in the reception of M-ary PSK or QAM signals that are derived from encoding binary PN sequences. Formulas for the period and probability density-function (p.d.f.) of the pseudo-random M-ary sequence as functions of M and the period of the underlying binary PN sequence are given. The distortion of the probabilistic symmetry of the transmitted constellation is also quantified. Simulation results are presented that illustrate the influence of these signal characteristics on the convergence behavior of CMA.< >

This paper studies the ability of the exponentially weighted RLS algorithm to track a Doppler shifted BPSK communications signal. This is modeled as a chirped AR1 process in Gaussian white noise. Expressions for the optimum Wiener filter, noise misadjustment, and lag misadjustment are shown. It is shown that as in the chirped sinusoid case the error can be written in terms of the forgetting rate /spl beta/=1-/spl lambda/ of the RLS algorithm; the noise misadjustment is of the order /spl beta/ and lag misadjustment of order 1//spl beta//sup 2/. However, as the bandwidth of the signal increases the relative lag misadjustment is shown to decrease.< >

A network approach to parallel discrete event simulation is described. A set of production rules is used to describe the behavior of active objects in a simulation system so that production rules can be merged and evaluated collectively in a rule network. To maintain correctness and exploit all possible parallelism, each token is time-stamped and can be processed asynchronously. To handle rollbacks, a lazy cancellation approach is used. © 1993 IEEE.

An efficient planar antenna structure is investigated which is compatible with high-speed solid-state devices. The antenna consists of a cavity-backed strip-dipole printed on a Si or GaAs wafer. The cavity behind the dipole can either be a rectangular machined cavity or a pyramidal cavity which is anisotropically etched in silicon and metallized with gold. Numerical results are presented for an element of aperture size 0.6/spl lambda/-square printed on a GaAs wafer of thickness 0.15 dielectric wavelengths. The backing cavity is assumed to be anisotropically etched in silicon and therefore its flare angle is fixed to 70/spl deg/.< >

We consider a class of symmetric Hopfield Networks, with nonpositive synapses and zero thresholds and address a variety of design and analysis issues conected with Unidirectional Error Correcting Coding applications of this class. We show that this class is naturally suited to work in a unidirectional error environment We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a set of vectors to be storable in a Nonpositive Network. We propose a simple word storage algorithm, which is amenable to on line implementation, and guarantees storage of all storage compatible words. We show that the storage algorithm creates a maximally fault tolerant network which is free from spurious stationary points, whenever that freedom is possible. We also give a word forgetting algorithm; a tight, deterministic bound on the storage capacity, and give conditions under which the network created by our storage scheme tolerates a given number of arbitrary physical faults.

A number of different techniques for the suppression of narrowband interference due to overlay in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems have previously been studied. The relative performances of three such techniques for a fading channel, multi-user CDMA system are described. Personal communication network systems using suppression filters based on the transversal least mean square (LMS) and the lattice and transform domain algorithms are studied. Bit error rates are found by simulations for different suppression filters. The overlay signal is assumed to be narrowband binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and the performance of these systems is studied for varying BPSK carrier frequency offsets. Since both the lattice and LMS filters converge to the Wiener filter, their relative performance is also studied during the on/off transient of the interference. It is found that the LMS and recursive least square (RLS) perform similarly under stationary interference. The RLS is less susceptible to changes in the interference due to its faster convergence.< >
