In this study, TiC + TiB2 nano-ceramics reinforced high–Cr die steels were successfully prepared using aluminum-based master alloy as a carrier for the nano-ceramics. The impact of nano-ceramics on the microstructure of steels as well as the tensile properties and friction and wear properties under high temperature conditions were explored. The incorporated nano-ceramics can significantly refine the microstructure of steels, resulting in finer and more uniformly precipitated carbides, thereby effectively improving the mechanical properties of steels. Compared with unmanipulated high–Cr die steels, the high-temperature (550 °C) yield strength of high–Cr steels reinforced with 0.02 wt% nano-ceramic was increased from 963 MPa to 1274 MPa. The volume wear rate of nano-ceramics reinforced high Cr steels reached 11.9 × 10−13 m3/m, 3.4 × 10−13 m3/m, 5.6 × 10−13 m3/m and 6.3 × 10−13 m3/m under the four conditions of 400 °C-30 N-300 r/min, 550 °C-20 N-300 r/min, 550 °C-30 N-300 r/min and 550 °C-40 N-300 r/min, which were reduced by 23.7 %, 34.6 %, 34.9 % and 35.1 % respectively. These results provide a new insight into improving the high-temperature friction and wear properties of steels. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Traditional LiDAR odometry (LO) systems mainly leverage geometric information obtained from the traversed surroundings to register laser scans and estimate LiDAR ego-motion, while it may be unreliable in dynamic or unstructured environments. This paper proposes InTEn-LOAM, a low-drift and robust LiDAR odometry and mapping method that fully exploits implicit information of laser sweeps (i.e., geometric, intensity, and temporal characteristics). Scanned points are projected to cylindrical images, which facilitate the efficient and adaptive extraction of various types of features, i.e., ground, beam, facade, and reflector. We propose a novel intensity-based points registration algorithm and incorporate it into the LiDAR odometry, enabling the LO system to jointly estimate the LiDAR ego-motion using both geometric and intensity feature points. To eliminate the interference of dynamic objects, we propose a temporal-based dynamic object removal approach to filter them out before map update. Moreover, the local map is organized and downsampled using a temporal-related voxel grid filter to maintain the similarity between the current scan and the static local map. Extensive experiments are conducted on both simulated and real-world datasets. The results show that the proposed method achieves similar or better accuracy w.r.t the state-of-the-arts in normal driving scenarios and outperforms geometric-based LO in unstructured environments. © 2022, CC BY.

Several studies stated that more natural and direct interactive control methods are needed in pilot training especially in case of emergency. The expression of intention based on biological signal is a natural way. Eye movement plays an important role in human interaction with the environment which is suitable as a control instruction. Eye movement signals have certain temporal feature in Electroencephalogram(EEG) signals. We collected the eye movement signals by an EEG headset with dry electrodes with high performance. At the same time, deep learning has shown great success in EEG signal processing. In this work, a shallow 2D-Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) structure is proposed to classify the eye movements in 4 directions of upward, downward, leftward and rightward in EEG signals, which are used as 4 kinds of commands to control virtual *** data are fed to the network through the simulation training experiment designed by us. The average accuracy of the 4 eye movement directions was 88.13%, 86.59%, 87.78% and 87.85% respectively. Among the 10 subjects, the highest accuracy was 92.71%, the lowest was 84.88%, and the total average accuracy was 87.59%, which proves the effectiveness of the scheme.

High-throughput screening for biomedical applications in a Ti-Zr-Nb alloy system through masking co-sputtering

A method of co-sputtering deposition combined with physical masking was applied to the parallel preparation of a ternary Ti-NbZr system alloy. Sixteen independent specimens with varying compositions were obtained. Their microstructure, phase structure,Young’s modulus, nanoindentation hardness, and electrochemical behavior in a phosphate buffer solution(PBS) were studied in detail. It was revealed that the Ti-Zr-Nb alloys possess a single BCC structure. As confirmed via nanoindentation tests, the Young’s modulus of the specimens ranged from 80.3 to 94.8 GPa and the nanoindentation hardness ranged from 3.6 to 5.0 *** optimizing the composition of the specimens, the Ti34Zr52Nb14 alloy was made to possess the lowest modulus in this work(76.5 GPa). Moreover, the Ti34Zr52Nb14 alloy showed excellent corrosion resistance in PBS without any tendency for pitting at anodic potentials up to 1 Vsce. These preliminary advantages offer the opportunity to explore new orthopedic implant alloys based on Ti-Zr-Nb alloys. Moreover, this work provides an effective method for the parallel preparation of biomedical alloys.

Non-reciprocity of energy transfer derived from cubic stiffness-induced nonlinear phenomena

Introducing purely nonlinear elastic elements can induce rich dynamic behaviors, such as bifurcations, jumps and isolated resonance curves, to linear systems. Therefore, these elements are suitable for constructing strong non-reciprocity of vibration energy transfer. First, the energy transfer along reciprocal directions in a three-degree-of-freedom system is investigated, where three oscillators are connected by cubic springs. The semi-analytical solutions of the system are obtained using the complexification-averaging method and the least squares method. The results are compared against numerical solutions obtained by the Runge-Kutta method. The excitation amplitude range that produces strong non-reciprocity of vibration energy is analyzed. The jump phenomenon under combined excitation is investigated, and a trigger method for constructing non-reciprocity using an impulse is proposed. Then, an oscillator chain with cubic stiffness and scaling parameters is embedded into a multi-degree-of-freedom linear oscillator system to further explore the effect of cubic stiffness. Energy transfer along two directions is compared by exciting the leftmost oscillator and the rightmost oscillator. Moreover, the trigger effect of the impulse on non-reciprocity is demonstrated. The results show significant differences in vibration energy transfer within three distinct frequency bands. The critical points between reciprocal and non-reciprocal states are obtained, and the three stages of reciprocity related to excitation amplitude are analyzed. Lastly, the modulation effect of the cubic stiffness on non-reciprocity is conducted by comparing the energy of the output oscillator. © 2025 The Authors

Ultrasound regulates pea protein fibrillation: Impact on aggregation kinetics, physicochemical properties, structure and morphology

Ultrasonication can alter the structure of proteins and modify their physicochemical properties. However, there was little information concerning the ultrasound-induced protein fibrillation during the specific fibrillation process. In this study, ultrasound with different power densities (2.17, 2.39, 2.65, 3.19, and 3.73 W/mL) was applied to regulate the growth kinetics of the fibrillation process of pea protein isolates (PPI) at the beginning of fibrillation process (t0), the end of lag phase (t0.1) and the end of the exponential phase (t0.9). The morphology, physicochemical and structural properties of PPI, and the corresponding fibrils (PPIF) were investigated. The results showed that ultrasound treatments with power densities of 2.65, 3.19, and 3.73 W/mL at t0 accelerated fibrillation. The decreased hydrodynamic diameter and the higher proportions of β-sheet of PPI after ultrasonication indicated a disassociation of PPI agglomerates and a structure transformation, which may help PPI go through the lag phase. Ultrasound treatment increased the growth rate of PPIF with higher power density at t0.1 (3.73 W/mL) but lower power density at t0.9 (2.17 W/mL), which may be because appropriate ultrasound power broke protein oligomers into fragments as the template for fibril elongation, resulting in decreased hydrodynamic diameters and increased surface hydrophobicity. The morphology of ultrasound treated samples exhibited shorter contour lengths and higher flexibility than that of the control group, revealing the important role of ultrasound in regulating the protein fibrillation process.

According to the idea of "Emerging engineering Education" talent training model of Ministry of Education, students should be trained to have "metaphysical" concept, connection, imagination, macro thinking. Project-driven experiment teaching focuses on a project, and the goal is the completion of the project; the student is the center of teaching activities, which is supported by the inquiry process. This study analyzes the significance of the project-driven method in experimental teaching. This paper describes the implementation process of experimental teaching in the field of energy and power engineering in terms of project design, teaching system construction and so on under the project-driven method. By analyzing the results of a questionnaire survey distributed to students of energy and power in the College of Mechanical engineering at the Tianjin University of technology, it is found that the students are satisfied with the effects of project-driven experimental teaching, and the use of experimental teaching has greatly aroused the students' enthusiasm for learning. The ability of the students to engage in autonomous learning, engineering practice and innovation has been greatly improved, and a good teaching effect has been achieved.

In this paper, a modulation scheme referred as spatial modulation based color-intensity shift keying (SM CISK) is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed scheme amalgamates conventional color shift keying (CSK), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), and SM together to efficiently exploit the degrees of freedom in the color, the intensity, and the spatial domains. It maintains a constant average transmit power to fulfill the non-flickering requirement for the normal illumination. The bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme is studied based on the maximal likelihood (ML) detection. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperforms the joint color-and-spatial modulation (SM CSK) and CISK modulation scheme.
