Multivariate time series (MTS) forecasting has been extensively applied across diverse domains, such as weather prediction and energy consumption. However, current studies still rely on the vanilla point-wise self-attention mechanism to capture cross-variable dependencies, which is inadequate in extracting the intricate cross-correlation implied between variables. To fill this gap, we propose Variable Correlation Transformer (VCformer), which utilizes Variable Correlation Attention (VCA) module to mine the correlations among variables. Specifically, based on the stochastic process theory, VCA calculates and integrates the cross-correlation scores corresponding to different lags between queries and keys, thereby enhancing its ability to uncover multivariate relationships. Additionally, inspired by Koopman dynamics theory, we also develop Koopman Temporal Detector (KTD) to better address the non-stationarity in time series. The two key components enable VCformer to extract both multivariate correlations and temporal dependencies. Our extensive experiments on eight real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of VCformer, achieving top-tier performance compared to other state-of-the-art baseline models. Aptamers are single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides that selectively bind to specific targets, making them valuable for drug design and diagnostic applications. Identifying the interactions between aptamers and target proteins is crucial for these applications. The systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment process, traditionally used for this purpose, is challenging and time-consuming. The resulting aptamers often suffer from limitations in stability and diversity. Computational approaches have shown promise in aiding the discovery of high-performance aptamers, but existing methods are usually constrained by insufficient training data and limited generalizability. Recently, advancements in pre-training large language models have offered a new avenue to mitigate the dependency on large datasets. In this study, we propose a novel method to predict aptamer-protein interactions using large language models within a contrastive learning framework. Experimental results demonstrate that our method exhibits superior generalization and outperforms existing approaches. This method holds promise as a powerful tool for predicting aptamer-protein interactions.

Hypergraph processing has emerged as a powerful approach for analyzing complex multilateral relationships among multiple entities. Past research on building hypergraph systems suggests that changing the scheduling order of bipartite edge tasks can improve the overlap-induced data locality in hypergraph processing. However, due to the complex intertwined connections between vertices and hyperedges, it is almost impossible to find a locality-optimal scheduling order. Thus, these task-centric hypergraph systems often suffer from substantial off-chip *** this paper, we first propose a novel data-centric Load-Trigger-Reduce (LTR) execution model to exploit fully the locality in hypergraph processing. Unlike a task-centric model that loads the required data along with a task, our LTR model invokes tasks as per the data used. Specifically, once the hypergraph data is loaded into the on-chip memory, all of its relevant computation tasks will be triggered simultaneously to output intermediate results, which are finally reduced to update the final results. Our LTR model enables all hypergraph data to be accessed once in each iteration. To fully exploit the LTR performance potential, we further architect an LTR-driven hypergraph accelerator, XuLin, which features with an adaptive data loading mechanism to minimize the loading cost via chunk merging at runtime. XuLin is also equipped with a priority-based differential data reduction scheme to reduce the impact of conflicting updates on performance. We have implemented XuLin both on a Xilinx Alveo U250 FPGA card and using a cycle-accurate simulator. The results show that XuLin outperforms the state-of-the-art hypergraph processing solutions Hygra and ChGraph by 20.47× and 8.77× on average, respectively.

Accurate analysis of Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) signal is often impeded by challenges such as data scarcity and label imbalance, which affect the reliability and robustness of deep learning models. To address these challenges, this study introduces FHRDiff, a novel diffusion model conditioned on Phase-Rectified Signal Averaging (PRSA) spectrograms for the creation of synthetic FHR signals. Our model integrates time encoding, condition generation from PRSA spectrograms, and residual blocks with dilated convolutions to effectively manage temporal dynamics and long-range dependencies. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on FHR signal synthesis demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of FHRDiff. Compared to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and image-based diffusion model, our method achieves the highest signal fidelity and distribution similarity, with key measures including 0.067 maximum mean deviation (MMD), 0.492 percent root mean square difference (PRD), 1.763 relative entropy (RE), and 0.160 Frechet distance (FD). Expert validation confirms the model’s capacity to accurately generate data for normal and abnormal FHR signals based on the paired condition. In addition, an ablation study was conducted to highlight that the spectrogram paired condition can guide the diffusion model to produce synthetics FHR signals with greater diversity compared to unconditional models. The results emphasize diffusion models’ potential for broad application in biomedical time series analysis, such as generation, imputation and noise removal.

Text classification, a fundamental task in natural language processing (NLP), aims to categorize textual data into predefined labels. Traditional methods struggled with complex linguistic structures and semantic dependencies. The advent of deep learning, particularly recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and Transformer-based models, has significantly advanced the field by enabling nuanced feature extraction and context-aware predictions. Despite improvements, existing models exhibit limitations in balancing interpretability, computational efficiency, and long-range contextual understanding. This paper proposes the Dynamic Bidirectional Elman with Attention Network (DBEAN), which integrates bidirectional temporal modelling with self-attention mechanisms. The saliency methods are widely used for generating heatmaps that emphasize the important portions of an input image for deep networks on a specific classification task. Interpretability is crucial for deploying deep neural networks in real-world applications. However, the heatmaps produced by current visual explainable methods may contain or visualize particulars differently. To analyze and compare the visualization of different methods, such as Gradient-based, Activation-based, Perturbation-based, and Region-based methods, we empirically evaluated them on the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cancer cell) classification task using state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks. We also visualized the essential pathological features (salient parts) that are the reasons for the classification results on the classification of normal versus malignant cell (CNMC) dataset.

In an edge-assisted federated learning (FL) system, edge servers aggregate the local models from the clients within their coverage areas to produce intermediate models for the production of the global model. This significantly reduces the communication overhead incurred during the FL process. To accelerate model convergence, FedEdge, the state-of-the-art edge-assisted FL system, trains clients’ models in local federations when they wait for the global model in each training round. However, our investigation reveals that it drives the global model towards clients with excessive local training, causing model drifts that undermine model performance for other clients. To tackle this problem, this paper presents Maverick, a new edge-assisted FL system that mitigates model drifts by training personalized local models for clients through contrastive local training. It introduces a model-contrastive loss to facilitate personalized local federated training by driving clients’ local models away from the global model and close to their corresponding intermediate models. In addition, Maverick includes anomalous models in contrastive local training as negative samples to accelerate the convergence of clients’ local models. Extensive experiments are conducted on three widely-used models trained on three datasets to comprehensively evaluate the performance of Maverick. Compared to state-of-the-art edge-assisted FL systems, Maverick accelerates model convergence by up to 16.2x and improves model accuracy by up to 12.7%. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Mining World Indicators for Analyzing and Modeling the Development of Countries

The world indicators released by the World Bank or other organizations usually give the basic public knowledge about the world. However, separate and static index lacks the complex interplay among different indicators and thus cannot help us have an overall understanding of the world. To this end, we study the world indicators from a different angle. Firstly, we discover that there exist correlations between indicators either from a static view or from a dynamic view. Moreover, taking the trade and diplomatic relationships into consideration, we construct a multi-relational network to depict the interactions between different countries, and propose a Multiple Relations to Vector (MR2vec) model to study world indicators from a network perspective. The experimental results show the changes of world indicators are predictable with the proposed model, and our proposed MR2vec has wide adaptability in predicting multi-relation networks. © 2022 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Embodied AI represents systems where AI is integrated into physical entities. Large Language Model (LLM), which exhibits powerful language understanding abilities, has been extensively employed in embodied AI by facilitating sophisticated task planning. However, a critical safety issue remains overlooked: could these embodied LLMs perpetrate harmful behaviors? In response, we introduce BADROBOT, a novel attack paradigm aiming to make embodied LLMs violate safety and ethical constraints through typical voice-based user-system interactions. Specifically, three vulnerabilities are exploited to achieve this type of attack: (i) manipulation of LLMs within robotic systems, (ii) misalignment between linguistic outputs and physical actions, and (iii) unintentional hazardous behaviors caused by world knowledge’s flaws. Furthermore, we construct a benchmark of various malicious physical action queries to evaluate BADROBOT’s attack performance. Based on this benchmark, extensive experiments against existing prominent embodied LLM frameworks (e.g., Voxposer, Code as Policies, and ProgPrompt) demonstrate the effectiveness of our BADROBOT. Nowadays, high-level synthesis (HLS) has gained prominence for FPGA-based architecture prototyping, enhancing productivity significantly. Despite this advancement, HLS tools are impeded by a critical drawback: they lack support for dynamic memory management (DMM), leading to static mem-ory allocation and suboptimal use of memory resources. In response, numerous efforts have been made to develop DMM solutions compatible with HLS. However, our analysis indicates that existing solutions fail to concurrently meet the desired trifecta of scalability (efficient management of memory of any size), efficiency (minimal latency in memory (de-)allocation), and robustness (low allocation failure rates). This limitation hampers their applicability in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce GraDMM, a “three-birds-one- stone” solution that comprehensively enhances the scalability, efficiency, and robustness of DMM. The key insight is to formulate memory (de-)allocation as graph analytics and lever-age sophisticated FPGA-based graph processing techniques. To achieve scalability, GraDMM specializes a simplified pipeline that significantly suppresses resource utilization expansion caused by managed memory scaling. This is crucial for managing arbitrarily sized memory on resource-limited FPGA platforms. For efficiency, GraDMM implements a data-centric concurrent traversal scheme and a shortcut-assisted fast traversal policy to accelerate (de-)allocation-guided graph traversal, reducing mem-ory (de-)allocation latency. To enhance robustness, GraDMM incorporates an adaptive memory defragmenter that defragments managed memory to minimize fragmentation-induced allocation failures. GraDMM is encapsulated as a library, providing high- level interfaces for users and ensuring synthesizability with Vi- vado HLS.
