Deep Learning Based Proactive Anomaly Detection for 5G Core Control Plane Network Function Interactions

The Service-Based Architecture (SBA) introduced by 3GPP allows the control plane of 5G Core Network (CN) to function through a set of interconnected Network Functions (NFs), which offers significant benefits such as improved scalability, simplified operations, and efficient resource utilization. However, such a new transformation could also make critical NFs in 5G CN become more susceptible to attacks due to both internal vulnerabilities within the software-implemented NFs or the expanded interfaces brought by the SBA. Existing studies targeting 5G network security pay little attention to the detection of abnormal behaviors from control plane NFs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose 5GCGuard, an anomaly detection scheme aiming at identifying abnormal NF interactions in 5G CN. It employs a deep learning-based sequence model to learn normal interaction patterns and detects anomalies based on deviations from the learned pattern. Special designs including attention mechanism, multi-task learning, probabilistic labeling and automatic threshold decision are made to enhance its detection capabilities. We establish a cloud-native 5G testbed to evaluate the effectiveness of 5GCGuard. Extensive evaluation results show its superiority over comparison schemes. Case studies also demonstrate its ability to proactively detect various NF interaction anomalies, enabling swift action to block attacks and prevent further damage. © 2015 IEEE.

In the last decades, free-floating car sharing (FFCS) has become a fast-growing mode of mobility service and promoted in many cities across the world. While lots of researchers have paid increasing attention to FFCS in recent years, little is known regarding the characterization and evolution of FFCS in Chinese cities, where car sharing services are gaining more and more popularity. In this work, we focus on two Chinese cities: Chengdu and Changchun, both of which have witnessed the shutdown of FFCS service and its replacement with station-based car sharing (SBCS). We rebuild 743,796 trips using public data from the smartphone application of a car sharing service, then explore the characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of FFCS usage, and identify the differences compared to those in Europe and North America. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis of the service coverage, demand spatiotemporal distribution and usage patterns of car sharing services before and after the shutdown of FFCS. Results show that, the shutdown of FFCS did not cause a severe disruption to the car sharing service. Instead, the introduction of SBCS effectively inherited and accommodated the travel demand. This work underscores the importance of considering the unique characteristics of China’s FFCS services when develop operation strategies and demonstrates that a well-designed SBCS could emerge as a viable alternative. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Salix-Leaf: Find Main Veins of Signal Clusters for Practical Parallel Decoding

Parallel decoding of backscatter improves communication throughput by enabling concurrent transmission of backscatter tags. In practical applications of parallel decoding, it is extremely difficult to distinguish collided signals in superclusters where multiple signal clusters overlap. Existing methods are usually effective for superclusters with uniformly distributed signals. Nevertheless, there are many more scenarios in which signals in superclusters tend to gather unevenly, and existing methods cannot work. Such uneven clustering of signals occurs due to the following two possible causes: (1) signal-strengthdifferences (SSDs) among tags;or (2) cluster drifting (CD) driven by interferences from other objects within communication environments. This paper proposes a novel scheme called SalixLeaf, which aims to identify the main veins of signal clusters to address this problem of superclusters with unevenly distributed signals. Salix-Leaf identifies the main vein of each signal cluster for fine-grained clustering so that the direction of the main veins can be used to verify the accuracy of clustering. In addition, SalixLeaf employs a supercluster decomposer that divides signals into different segments for clustering analysis, enhancing robustness and practicability. Experimental results show that Salix-Leaf achieves a 1.2-fold increase in throughput and a 25% reduction in bit error rate (BER) compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Segment Together: A Versatile Paradigm for Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation

The scarcity of annotations has become a significant obstacle in training powerful deep-learning models for medical image segmentation, limiting their clinical application. To overcome this, semi-supervised learning that leverages abundant unlabeled data is highly desirable to enhance model training. However, most existing works still focus on specific medical tasks and underestimate the potential of learning across diverse tasks and datasets. In this paper, we propose a Versatile Semi-supervised framework (VerSemi) to present a new perspective that integrates various SSL tasks into a unified model with an extensive label space, exploiting more unlabeled data for semi-supervised medical image segmentation. Specifically, we introduce a dynamic task-prompted design to segment various targets from different datasets. Next, this unified model is used to identify the foreground regions from all labeled data, capturing cross-dataset semantics. Particularly, we create a synthetic task with a CutMix strategy to augment foreground targets within the expanded label space. To effectively utilize unlabeled data, we introduce a consistency constraint that aligns aggregated predictions from various tasks with those from the synthetic task, further guiding the model to accurately segment foreground regions during training. We evaluated our VerSemi framework against seven established SSL methods on four public benchmarking datasets. Our results suggest that VerSemi consistently outperforms all competing methods, beating the second-best method with a 2.69% average Dice gain on four datasets and setting a new state of the art for semi-supervised medical image segmentation. Given the critical role of rotating machinery in industrial cyber-physical systems (ICPS), ensuring their reliable operation is essential for the stability and safety of ICPS. Deep neural networks have demonstrated competitive results for intelligent fault diagnosis, which are usually trained via the historical data of all fault modes. However, in real engineering, it is usually difficult to collect samples and exhaust all failures during the training stage. As a result, out-of-distribution fault diagnosis (OOD-FD) becomes a more realistic problem that requires the methods to not only accurately diagnose the known faults, but also effectively recognize unknown ones. Therefore, a novel orthogonal anchor clustering with focal attention (FA-OAC) is proposed in this paper for OOD-FD. Firstly, an orthogonal anchor clustering (OAC) algorithm is proposed to fix the class center of each fault mode orthogonally and distinguish the known and unknown faults at the class level. Then, because the identifiability of different fault modes changes a lot in OOD-FD, the focal attention mechanism is applied to dynamically adjust the attention to different fault modes according to the distance loss of OAC, thus addressing the identifiability imbalance problem. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, different OOD-FD tasks are designed based on two rotating machinery datasets. The experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art fault diagnosis methods have demonstrated that the proposed method has improved the OOD-FD performance greatly and therefore provides an effective tool in real engineering. © 2023 IEEE.

The CRISPR-Cas9 system, found across bacteria and archaea, enables efficient genome engineering in eukaryotic cells. There is a challenge that Cas9 guide RNA may cause off-target activities. Although numbers of methods have been proposed to predict off-target activities in guide RNA designing, this procedure involves numerous potential off-target sites, which causes label imbalance problem. To address this problem, we developed a deep learning framework, named CAF-Net (Cas9 Augmentation and Finetune Network), for predicting off-target activities of CRISPR-Cas9. First, we pretrain an embedding model to extract features from target and guide sequence pairs. Subsequently, data augmentation is applied to these features. And finally, the model is finetuned with synthetic samples. Evaluation results demonstrate its performance on published datasets.

Dual Graph Inference Network for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Establishing global contextual relationships between objects is crucial for weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) tasks that lack pixel-level labels. Limited by the efficiency of convolutional operations in capturing long-range dependencies with a limited receptive field and to bridge the gap between image-level annotations and pixel-level labels, we propose a Dual Graph Reasoning Mapping (DGRM) module. When integrated into a convolutional network, it conducts contextual graph reasoning on both spatial and interaction spaces of visual features. The first component of this graph reasoning module involves incorporating commonsense knowledge extracted from an external knowledge base into visual features to promote global contextual reasoning for visual graphs. The second component focuses on reasoning in the projected interaction space, utilizing abstracted object class attributes from high-level visual features to establish dependencies among channels in a potential low-dimensional space. Moreover, to capture correspondences at different semantic levels, we model the feature maps in a pyramid-like structure for graph reasoning at various levels. Extensive experiments on popular datasets, such as PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014, demonstrate the superiority of our approach. Our code is provided at https://***/JIAZHANG666/DGRM. © 2025 IEEE.

Vision-Amplified Semantic Entropy for Hallucination Detection in Medical Visual Question Answering

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated significant potential in medical Visual Question Answering (VQA). Yet, they remain prone to hallucinations—incorrect responses that contradict input images, posing substantial risks in clinical decision-making. Detecting these hallucinations is essential for establishing trust in MLLMs among clinicians and patients, thereby enabling their real-world adoption. Current hallucination detection methods, especially semantic entropy (SE), have demonstrated promising hallucination detection capacity for LLMs. However, adapting SE to medical MLLMs by incorporating visual perturbations presents a dilemma. Weak perturbations preserve image content and ensure clinical validity, but may be overlooked by medical MLLMs, which tend to over rely on language priors. In contrast, strong perturbations can distort essential diagnostic features, compromising clinical interpretation. To address this issue, we propose Vision Amplified Semantic Entropy (VASE), which incorporates weak image transformations and amplifies the impact of visual input, to improve hallucination detection in medical VQA. We first estimate the semantic predictive distribution under weak visual transformations to preserve clinical validity, and then amplify visual influence by contrasting this distribution with that derived from a distorted image. The entropy of the resulting distribution is estimated as VASE. Experiments on two medical open-ended VQA datasets demonstrate that VASE consistently outperforms existing hallucination detection methods. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Stealthy False data Injection Attacks in Multi-Channel Vehicular Communication: White-Box and Gray-Box Strategies

Understanding the vulnerabilities of vehicular networks from an attacker's perspective is crucial for identifying stealthy false data injection (FDI) attacks and developing robust defense methods. This paper investigates stealthy FDI attacks in multi-channel vehicular communication systems. We construct a multi-source state estimation system using a sequential Kalman filter to integrate and estimate redundant state information transmitted by preceding vehicles across multiple channels. To enhance the system's resilience against FDI attacks, we incorporate a Sage-Husa adaptive filter and a chi-squared detector, which dynamically estimate and detect channel noise based on estimation errors. Within this framework, we utilize real-time state information and channel transmission residual to determine the probability of an attack window occurring. The attack process is divided into three phases, during which critical noise disturbances are introduced to create attack windows, allowing the attack to progressively align with the target state. Based on this analysis, we develop an optimization model for attack generation with complete channel information (AG-with-CCI) to facilitate a white-box attack. Additionally, acknowledging that attackers may not have access to real-time information from all channels, we analyze the iterative equations of state estimation errors and residuals to establish the conditions under which stealthy FDI attacks can be successfully executed, enabling the attack generation with attacked channel information (AG-with-ACI) to achieve a gray-box attack. Numerical simulations demonstrate that both attack methods can evade current detection mechanisms and achieve their intended objectives. © 2025 IEEE.

ZuantuSet: A Collection of Historical Chinese Visualizations and Illustrations

Historical visualizations are a valuable resource for studying the history of visualization and inspecting the cultural context where they were created. When investigating historical visualizations, it is essential to consider contributions from different cultural frameworks to gain a comprehensive understanding. While there is extensive research on historical visualizations within the European cultural framework, this work shifts the focus to ancient China, a cultural context that remains underexplored by visualization researchers. To this aim, we propose a semi-automatic pipeline to collect, extract, and label historical Chinese visualizations. Through the pipeline, we curate ZuantuSet, a dataset with over 71K visualizations and 108K illustrations. We analyze distinctive design patterns of historical Chinese visualizations and their potential causes within the context of Chinese history and culture. We illustrate potential usage scenarios for this dataset, summarize the unique challenges and solutions associated with collecting historical Chinese visualizations, and outline future research directions.
