OD flows provide important information for traffic management and planning. In this paper, we propose four OD prediction models based on the data obtained by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. The principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce the dimension of the original OD matrices and to separate the main structure patterns from the noisier components. A state-space model is established for the main structure patterns and the structure deviations, and is incorporated in the Kalman filter framework to make prediction. We further develop three K- Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) based pattern recognition approaches. The proposed four approaches are validated with three days' field ANPR data from Changsha city, P.R. China. The results show that on one hand our proposed approaches are able to make accurate prediction of OD flows under different demand conditions. On the other hand, the prediction accuracy is highly dependent on the quality of the available OD data: the Kalman filter model performs better for regular and periodic OD patterns;while for irregular OD matrices K-NN models could make more accurate prediction. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper proposes a framework for fuzzy temporal association rule mining based on density clustering optimization, aimed at improving the fuzzification of continuous attributes and enhancing the efficiency of mining temporal association rules. The first part of the framework effectively handles continuous attribute data and reduces data redundancy by adopting a density peak clustering algorithm and designing an optimized membership function. The second part introduces a fuzzy list ranking structure combined with item lifespan to mine fuzzy temporal association rules. Experimental results demonstrate that the framework exhibits superior performance in mining fuzzy temporal association rules and outperforms advanced algorithms in handling continuous attributes. © 2024 IEEE.

To fully leverage the complementary advantages of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) and Differential Evolution (DE) algorithms for various optimization problems, this paper introduces an ABC-DE hybrid evolutionary algorithm based on individual preference for population selection. This method divides the population into subpopulations using a preference-based selection mechanism and employs ABC and DE for diverse subpopulation search strategies. Additionally, it implements a new resource allocation mechanism that increases computational efforts for promising solutions. Comparative analysis on the CEC2014 benchmark suite with five other current ABC and DE improved algorithms confirms that the proposed hybrid evolutionary algorithm effectively enhances convergence speed, accuracy, and robustness. © 2024 SPIE.

The algal bloom is a prominent manifestation of water pollution. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) shows an advantage in water monitoring due to its characteristic of all-time and all-weather. The water regions where algae gather present dark in SAR image. However, dark regions may also be caused by other factors, such as low wind. This paper proposes an improved algal bloom discrimination method based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to recognize the dark regions of algal bloom. Taihu Lake is chosen as the research area in this study because of its serious bloom in recent years. By means of quasi-synchronous optical images, the dark region database of SAR images labeled algal bloom and non-algal bloom are obtained. Then the segmentation algorithm and region growing algorithm are used to acquire the feature from dark regions, and divided into training feature set and testing feature set. Finally, the training and testing feature set are used for ANN-based discrimination model construction and verification. According the experimental results, the overall accuracy reaches 80%, which indicates that ANN model has a good applicability in algal bloom recognition of SAR image. © 2019 IEEE.

The applications of mobile communication and automatic driving-related technologies in transportation have made a revolution for us in traffic information perception, vehicle cooperative control, and traffic management. Besides, the emergence and development of connected vehicles (CV) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) have gradually changed the traditional traffic flow into a mixed one. In order to investigate their influences and characteristics of mixed traffic flows, this paper constructs an analysis model to derive the linear stability condition of the mixed traffic flow with CV and CAV based on the simplified desired safety margin (SDSM) model. Several numerical experiments are conducted to analyze the string stability of homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic flow, respectively. The results reveal that the presence of CAV could contribute to improving the string stability as well as reducing rear-end crashes. The higher the penetration rate of CAV, the more stable the string. And the time delay in drivers and communications is not conducive to the string stability. Besides, it is also found that controllable vehicles show great potential in preventing shockwave formation and propagation, suggesting a new way in traffic flow management. © ASCE.

Four-dimensional (4D) flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology has emerged as a valuable tool in angiography, offering unique insights into the hemodynamics and flow patterns. This research aims to explore the role of 4D flow MRI in advancing our understanding of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), covering its applications in diagnosing, characterizing and mechanism of DVT, as well as its potential for guiding treatment strategies. The qualitative and quantitative information provided by 4D flow MRI enables a comprehensive assessment of blood flow in different vascular regions, shedding light on the relationship between hemodynamic changes and the onset and progression of vascular diseases. Nevertheless, most quantitative research findings for 4D hemodynamic indicators are lacking, and their use is mainly limited to examining arterial conditions. More exploration will be necessary to determine their applicability in studying venous vessels. © 2025 The Authors

The symmetric intersection (SI) is a type of unconventional intersection that could increase capacity of the intersection. Although this type of intersection is promising, the bicycle crossing method has not been designed for SI, which prevents it from implementation. In this study, we propose three bicycle crossing designs for the purpose of eliminating the conflict between bicycles and vehicles, and optimize the corresponding signal timing. The first is to reverse the bicycle lane on the right-hand-traffic arterial, so that left-turning bicycles can pass at any time, which can reduce the flow of bicycles through the conflicting area of the intersection. The second is to use an advanced stop line, which moves the stop line backwards and sets up a bicycle waiting area in the front to reduce the conflict between bicycles and vehicles. The third is to set up an exclusive phase for bicycles to separate vehicles and bicycles. A linear programming model that maximizes the capacity of the intersection for vehicles considering constraints such as signal phase and cycle duration is established to calculate the signal timing. A case study is performed to determine the optimal signal timing of each condition. The results show that the scheme of advanced stop lines could reduce delays and increase capacity of the intersection for bicycles, but the capacity for vehicles is reduced, and thus should be used when the traffic demand of motor vehicles is not high. In the condition of high-throughput vehicles, the exclusive phase for bicycles perform better. © 2021 IEEE.

Understanding and improving fairness in cognitive diagnosis

Intelligent education is a significant application of artificial intelligence. One of the key research topics in intelligence education is cognitive diagnosis, which aims to gauge the level of proficiency among students on specific knowledge concepts(e.g., Geometry). To the best of our knowledge, most of the existing cognitive models primarily focus on improving diagnostic accuracy while rarely considering fairness issues; for instance, the diagnosis of students may be affected by various sensitive attributes(e.g., region). In this paper,we aim to explore fairness in cognitive diagnosis and answer two questions:(1) Are the results of existing cognitive diagnosis models affected by sensitive attributes?(2) If yes, how can we mitigate the impact of sensitive attributes to ensure fair diagnosis results? To this end, we first empirically reveal that several wellknown cognitive diagnosis methods usually lead to unfair performances, and the trend of unfairness varies among different cognitive diagnosis models. Then, we make a theoretical analysis to explain the reasons behind this phenomenon. To resolve the unfairness problem in existing cognitive diagnosis models, we propose a general fairness-aware cognitive diagnosis framework, FairCD. Our fundamental principle involves eliminating the effect of sensitive attributes on student proficiency. To achieve this, we divide student proficiency in existing cognitive diagnosis models into two components: bias proficiency and fair *** design two orthogonal tasks for each of them to ensure that fairness in proficiency remains independent of sensitive attributes and take it as the final diagnosed result. Extensive experiments on the Program for International Student Assessment(PISA) dataset clearly show the effectiveness of our framework.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is a kind of hazardous waste. In the recent years, the demand for the disposal of MSWIFA has gradually increased with the increase of its production. The co-processing of MSWIFA in cement kiln has become the future development trend in this field due to the advantages of large disposal capacity, thorough disposal and low secondary pollution. In this paper, the life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to analyze the environmental impact of cement kiln co-processing MSWIFA, and the influence of allocation method of by-products in pretreatment process on calculation results was discussed. The results of analysis on the pretreatment of MSWIFA using the water-washing process showed that the allocation method of by-products will affect the calculation results to a certain extent, especially in the toxicity-related indicators, and for pretreatment process, electricity production process is the key link to causing environmental impact. The environmental analysis for clinker product shows that the contribution ratio of pretreatment process calculated by extended boundary method was 3.33% larger than that of mass allocation method in acidification potential(AP), and 3.32% smaller than that in WCP. © 2021 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Due to the increase of the number and frequency of major events in the past decades, studies on pedestrian dynamics have attracted attentions of researchers of various disciplines. Considering that escape environment, especially the ones under special circumstances including fire, can be greatly affected by factors such as smoke, pedestrian gait is as a result different from normal walking. Thus an experimental study on fundamental diagram of single-file pedestrian movement at different available heights is detailed in the present paper. In total five experimental scenarios with the available heights of 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 m were investigated. The relationship between velocity and density, density and flow, and spatial headway and instantaneous velocity were analyzed. It is found that the pedestrian’s free walking speed is the largest at the height of 2 m. At high density scenarios, the speed of pedestrians presents two separated states, i.e., 0.5 m/s at the heights of 2.0 and 1.6 m and 0.25 m/s at the heights of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4m. It is also found that there are three segments, namely laminar flow state, stop and go phenomenon and jammed state, in the fundamental diagram. The results presented in this paper is helpful in understanding pedestrian evacuation at different heights. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
