Accurate and efficient lumbar spine disease identification is crucial for clinical diagnosis. However, existing deep learning models with millions of parameters often fail to learn with only hundreds or dozens of medical images. These models also ignore the contextual relationship between adjacent objects, such as between vertebras and intervertebral discs. This work introduces a multi-scale context-guided network with coarse-to-fine localization and classification, named CCFNet, for lumbar spine disease identification. Specifically, in learning, we divide the localization objective into two parallel tasks, coarse and fine, which are more straightforward and effectively reduce the number of parameters and computational cost. The experimental results show that the coarse-to-fine design presents the potential to achieve high performance with fewer parameters and data requirements. Moreover, the multi-scale context-guided module can significantly improve the performance by 6.45% and 5.51% with ResNet18 and ResNet50, respectively. Our code is available at Github. With the rapid growth of the number of processors in a multiprocessor system, faulty processors occur in it with a probability that rises quickly. The probability of a subsystem with an appropriate size being fault-free in a definite time interval is a significant and practical measure of the reliability for a multiprocessor system, which characterizes the functionality of a multiprocessor system well. Motivated by the study of subgraph reliability, as well as the attractive structure and fault tolerance properties of (n, k)-arrangement graph A n, k, we focus on the subgraph reliability for A n, k under the probabilistic fault model in this article. First, we investigate intersections of no more than four subgraphs in A n, k, and classify all the intersecting modes. Second, we focus on the probability P(q, A n, k n-1, k-1) with which at least one (n-1, k-1)-subarrangement graph is fault-free in A n, k, when given a uniform probability q with which a single vertex is fault-free, and we establish the P(q, A n, kn-1, k-1) by adopting the principle of inclusion-exclusion under the probabilistic fault model. Finally, we study the probabilistic fault model involving a nonuniform probability with which a single vertex is fault-free, and we prove that the P(q, A n, kn-1, k-1) under both models is very close to the asymptotic value by both theoretical arguments and experimental results. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The task of image-guided point cloud completion aims to leverage information from images to address uncertainty issues in the completion inference of point clouds. The key challenge in this setting lies in how to effectively combine features extracted from both modalities. Due to the large domain discrepancy between the image and point cloud, existing methods that use cross-modal attention to directly fuse features have increased attention on redundant information and noise from different modalities, resulting in poor feature fusion performance. Hence, by introducing multi-modal fusion transformers that use bottleneck tokens, we enabled point cloud feature to learn image feature through information bridges, leading to improved point cloud completion performance. Our method can not only benefit from RGB images, but also from sketches with less feature information but more emphasis on edge information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method enhances the quality of point cloud completion and outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Piecewise linear neural networks (PLNNs) are proven universal approximators for continuous functions on the compact domain. For multiple PLNNs (mPLNNs) differing from each other in suffering different approximation errors (AEs) when approximating the same continuous function, activating all the PLNNs to approximate the continuous function, and then, picking up the minimum AE (MAE) from all the AEs seems to be a practical way to arrive at such MAE. Activating PLNNs has to consume energy, and more activated PLNNs provide more AEs to consider, which can maximize the probability of guaranteeing the MAE, while also needing to harvest more energy. Therefore, how to make the optimal tradeoff between energy harvested and approximation accuracy for mPLNNs arises as an interesting issue. To address this problem, this paper first deduces the objective function, with the accumulative probability of obtaining the MAE as the objective and the accumulative energy harvested as the constraint, then proposes an algorithm for mPLNNs to enjoy the maximum probability of achieving the MAE within the acceptable level of accumulative energy harvested. Experiments verify its performance.

In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Operating Envelope (DOE) coordination method for aggregators in distribution networks (DNs). While the DOE acts as a time-varying power export limit to ensure the DN’s integrity, existing aggregator-agnostic allocation overlooks the surplus of aggregators. To address this limitation, our approach allows aggregators to cooperatively adjust DOEs by solving a two-stage robust optimization and settling payments between themselves. The coordination problem is solved by the column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm, ensuring that any power injection within the adjusted DOE maintains the network integrity. Consequently, the aggregators’ total surplus increases. A 4-bus system case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Reading news is an important way for people to obtain information. People can quickly sort out the context of events through a short news video. However, there are numerous news generated around the world every day. It's challenging to locate the interesting video. Thumbnails are often used as video covers and play an important role in displaying video content and driving views. Video owners can choose from individual images or elaborate thumbnails to upload to the site. But manually selecting from a large number of frames is time-consuming, and customizing thumbnails requires a high degree of expertise. Therefore, this paper proposes an automatic generation method of news video thumbnail, which can screen out semantically similar contents according to user query and combine them into a thumbnail. In order to facilitate the screening of graphic materials, we also propose a video content structuring method based on multiple cues, which can accurately segment the video into theme units. At the same time, we designed a visual system to display thumbnails and designed a user survey to investigate the performance of this method in news retrieval and understanding. Compared with peer methods, the thumbnails generated by our method can help users better understand the video content and locate the videos they are interested in. © 2022 IEEE.

Grain: Improving data efficiency of graph neural networks via diversified influence maximization

data selection methods, such as active learning and core-set selection, are useful tools for improving the data efficiency of deep learning models on large-scale datasets. However, recent deep learning models have moved forward from independent and identically distributed data to graph-structured data, such as social networks, e-commerce user-item graphs, and knowledge graphs. This evolution has led to the emergence of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) that go beyond the models existing data selection methods are designed for. Therefore, we present Grain, an efficient framework that opens up a new perspective through connecting data selection in GNNs with social influence maximization. By exploiting the common patterns of GNNs, Grain introduces a novel feature propagation concept, a diversified influence maximization objective with novel influence and diversity functions, and a greedy algorithm with an approximation guarantee into a unified framework. Empirical studies on public datasets demonstrate that Grain significantly improves both the performance and efficiency of data selection (including active learning and core-set selection) for GNNs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to bridge two largely parallel threads of research, data selection, and social influence maximization, in the setting of GNNs, paving new ways for improving data efficiency. With the increased popularity of IoT devices and applications, the amount of time-series IoT data has exploded and the need for efficient processing and analysis of time-series IoT data has also emerged. In this paper, we present, IoTPass, an IoT data management system for processing time-series data. IoTPass employs the microservice architecture to facilitate the development and deployment of functions, and adopts the Object model to structure the data and facilitate data analysis and visualization afterwards. IoTPass also adopt Revert-RPC (Remote Procedure Call) communication technique to avoid the performance degradation problem in service call processes and supports both synchronous and asynchronous service invocation modes. Experimental results demonstrate that IoTPass system meets the requirement of processing time-series IoT data in real time, which shows the effectiveness and scalability of the system.
