Mining World Indicators for Analyzing and Modeling the Development of Countries

The world indicators released by the World Bank or other organizations usually give the basic public knowledge about the world. However, separate and static index lacks the complex interplay among different indicators and thus cannot help us have an overall understanding of the world. To this end, we study the world indicators from a different angle. Firstly, we discover that there exist correlations between indicators either from a static view or from a dynamic view. Moreover, taking the trade and diplomatic relationships into consideration, we construct a multi-relational network to depict the interactions between different countries, and propose a Multiple Relations to Vector (MR2vec) model to study world indicators from a network perspective. The experimental results show the changes of world indicators are predictable with the proposed model, and our proposed MR2vec has wide adaptability in predicting multi-relation networks. © 2022 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in classification and regression tasks on RGB-based pathological inputs. The network's prediction mechanism must be interpretable to establish trust in the clinical routine. One principal approach to interpretation is feature attribution. Feature attribution methods identify the importance of input features for the output prediction. Building on the Information Bottleneck Attribution (IBA) method, we recognize the RGB's input regions with high mutual information with the network's output for each prediction. IBA identifies input regions that have sufficient predictive information. In this paper, we introduce "IBATree", a novel approach that combines IBA with decision trees to enhance both the interpretability and accuracy of DNNs in cancer cell classification. Our method leverages the information bottleneck framework to inject noise into feature maps and then isolates the most informative features for model predictions while maintaining high classification performance. We evaluated our proposed approach on three datasets - CNMC, ISBI2016, and BreaKHis - demonstrating competitive accuracy and producing clear interpretations. This makes IBATree particularly suitable for clinical applications, where understanding the rationale behind predictions is crucial. Our results show that IBATree provides reliable predictions and valuable insights into feature importance, paving the way for its application in various biomedical domains. © 2024 IEEE.

Evolutionary reinforcement learning algorithms (ERLs), which combine evolutionary algorithms (EAs) with reinforcement learning (RL), have demonstrated significant success in enhancing RL performance. However, most ERLs rely heavily on Gaussian mutation operators to generate new individuals. When the standard deviation is too large or small, this approach will result in the production of poor or highly similar offspring. Such outcomes can be detrimental to the learning process of the RL agent, as too many poor or similar experiences are generated by these individuals. In order to alleviate these issues, this paper proposes an Adaptive Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning (AERL) method that adaptively adjusts both the standard deviation and the evaluation process. By tracking the performance of new individuals, AERL maintains the mutation strength within a suitable range without the need for additional gradient computations. Moreover, the proposed AERL approach early terminates unnecessary evaluations and discards experiences arising from poor individuals, thereby resulting in enhanced learning efficiency. Empirical assessments conducted on a variety of continuous control problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the AERL method. © 2024 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent systems.

Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women worldwide. Early detection helps in reducing the number of deaths. Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a newer approach for breast screening, which has many advantages over handheld mammography such as safety, speed, and higher detection rate of breast cancer. Tumor detection, segmentation, and classification are key components in the analysis of medical images, especially challenging in the context of 3D ABUS due to the significant variability in tumor size and shape, unclear tumor boundaries, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The lack of publicly accessible, well-labeled ABUS datasets further hinders the advancement of systems for breast tumor analysis. Addressing this gap, we have organized the inaugural Tumor Detection, Segmentation, and Classification Challenge on Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound 2023 (TDSC-ABUS2023). This initiative aims to spearhead research in this field and create a definitive benchmark for tasks associated with 3D ABUS image analysis. In this paper, we summarize the top-performing algorithms from the challenge and provide critical analysis for ABUS image examination. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) covers the largest regions under low- and mid-latitude permafrost. The evolution of permafrost has significantly affected the hydrology, biogeochemistry, and infrastructure of Asia. However, model reconstructions of long-term permafrost evolution with high accuracy and reliability are insufficient. Here, spatial changes in mean annual ground temperature at the depth where the annual amplitude is zero (MAGT) on the TP since 1981 were modeled and validated based on temperature records from 155 boreholes, and future changes were predicted under scenarios from the Climate Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6). The results indicated that the MAGT on the TP was approximately 1.5 °C (2010 – 2018), and the corresponding permafrost extent on the TP is estimated to be approximately 1.03 × 106 km2, which is projected to decrease to 0.77 × 106, 0.50 × 106, 0.30 × 106, and 0.17 × 106 km2 under the scenarios of shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP)126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585, respectively, by 2100. As predicted in the SSP585 scenario, permafrost is predicted to largely disappear from many basins of major Asian rivers, such as the Yarlung Zangpo-Brahmaputra, Nu-Salween, and Lancang-Mekong Rivers, between 2041 and 2060, followed by the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers between 2061 and 2080. Moreover, the original stable permafrost in the West Kunlun Mountains will change to transitional and unstable conditions. Our study offers comprehensive datasets of year-to-year ground temperatures and permafrost extent maps for the TP, which can serve as a fundamental resource for further investigations on the hydrogeology, engineering geology, ecology, and geochemistry of the TP. © 2025 The Author(s)

In the past two decades, analyzing the information network has been intensively studied from various disciplines. Small world property and scale-free property prevail in network science research. The comparison and classification of different kinds of graphs are extremely important. However, how to design a robust and accurate classification with deep learning techniques for network property still lack enough attention, which is a vital task in various application scenarios. In this paper, we proposed the reliable network property classifier based on graph embedding(RNC) to classify the network property (scale free or small world property). In order to process non-euclidean data, we embedded each network into an image and use dimensional reduction, rasterization, and convolutional neural networks to complete the classification problem. The method can effectively accomplish classification tasks in not only artificial networks but also real networks. Besides, RNC wins greatly in terms of robustness on real networks, showing the robustness of RNC against the incomplete structure of the network. © 2019 IEEE.

Path planning is the core of autonomous robot navigation, which helps the robot to find a collision-free path to the destination based on the environment information. Most current path planning methods only consider the path length, but the optimal path may deviate from the shortest when considering other environmental factors such as uneven terrain or regions with varying traversal costs. Similarly, in scenarios prioritizing energy efficiency, a sole focus on path length may lead to suboptimal solutions. In this paper, an improved Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition (MOEA/D) with adaptive weight vector, external archive, and constrained update strategy namely the MOEA/D-EAWA is proposed. This algorithm not only considers the path length but also four additional objectives such as smoothness, traveling time, terrain (elevation), and speed limit (expected delay). In addition, MOEA/D-EAWA is better suited for such many-objective path planning problem which has an irregular, discrete, and sparse Pareto front. The simulation results from 90 map instances demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) have demonstrated promising optimization performance in addressing expensive dynamic optimization problems or expensive multimodal optimization problems. However, none of existing SAEAs are designed specifically for tackling expensive dynamic multimodal optimization problems (EDMMOPs). Therefore, in this paper, a first SAEA for tackling EDMMOPs is proposed. First, a nearest density clustering is designed to divide the population into a number of subpopulations, enhancing the diversity of the population. Then, a surrogate-assisted evolutionary optimizer is developed to construct surrogate models for each subpopulation and evolve all solutions in subpopulations by means of the built surrogate models, accelerating the population's converge towards several optimal solutions rapidly. Finally, a transfer learning-based prediction is devised to generate initial samples for next environment by leveraging the stored training samples in the previous environments. To assess the performance of our proposed algorithm, a set of complex benchmark problems is adopted, and the experimental results confirm its superior performance over several competitive algorithms on most test cases. © 2024 IEEE.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have emerged as highly effective strategies in the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases. mRNA design, a key to the success of mRNA vaccines, in-volves finding optimal codons and increasing secondary structure stability to lengthen mRNA half-life, ultimately enhancing protein expression. Despite receiving widespread attention, most methods primarily rely on manual design, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. While optimization approaches can alleviate this issue, existing methods still exhibit critical limitations caused by conflicts between codon usage and mRNA structural stability, compounded by the vast design space of mRNA resulting from the presence of synonymous codons. In this paper, a novel multi-objective evolutionary optimization-based mRNA design method is proposed. We first formulate the mRNA design problem as a multi-objective optimization problem and then develop an Elite Archive-Assisted Multi-Objective Evolutionary algorithm for mRNA Design, namely EAA-MOED, by incorporating a novel elite archive-assisted method into a weighted optimization framework to improve search efficiency. Experimental studies, involving two state-of-the-art mRNA design methods and five well-known MOEAs, show the competitiveness of the proposed EAA-MOED in mRNA design. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents our Facial Action Units (AUs) detection submission to the fifth Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild Competition (ABAW). Our approach consists of three main modules: (i) a pre-trained facial representation encoder which produce a strong facial representation from each input face image in the input sequence;(ii) an AU-specific feature generator that specifically learns a set of AU features from each facial representation;and (iii) a spatio-temporal graph learning module that constructs a spatio-temporal graph representation. This graph representation describes AUs contained in all frames and predicts the occurrence of each AU based on both the modeled spatial information within the corresponding face and the learned temporal dynamics among frames. The experimental results show that our approach outperformed the baseline and the spatio-temporal graph representation learning allows our model to generate the best results among all ablated systems. Our model ranks at the 4th place in the AU recognition track at the 5th ABAW Competition. Our code is publicly available at https://***/wzh125/ABAW-5. © 2023 IEEE.
