Severe temperature rise of mass concrete caused by cement hydration can lead to thermal cracks which further reduce the durability of concrete. In this study, three types of hydration heat controlling materials (HHCMs) respectively containing pure hydroxyl (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA), carboxyl (polyacrylic acid, PAA) and ester groups (maleic acid-ethylene glycol ester, P(MA-EG)) were synthesized and mixed with cement-based materials, and the hydration heat and setting time of cement pastes and the adiabatic temperature rise and strength of mortars were tested. The results showed that PAA and P(MA-EG) reduced the peak value of hydration heat release rate of cement paste by 77.45% and 62.28% respectively, and prolonged 54.14h and 15.56h respectively. The cumulative heat release within 72h decreased by 42.42% and 64.50% respectively, and the central temperatures of mortars containing PAA and P(MA-EG) decreased by 11.9 °C and 18.5 °C respectively. The mechanism of HHCMs was further revealed in terms of adsorption capacity, hydrodynamic radius, and conductivity and hydration products of cement pastes. The HHCMs containing carboxyl or hydroxyl groups, adsorbed on cement particles by Ca 2+ complexation, while the HHCMs containing ester groups, i.e. P(MA-EG), continuously hydrolyzed to carboxyl groups in alkaline cement pastes, which hydrolysis rate changed with the hydration temperature of cement-based materials to further regulate the hydration process. This study aims to provide technical feasibility and theoretical basis for exploring new avenues of synthesizing HHCMs with different functional groups. These novel HHCMs with great potentials can be as new admixtures to reduce thermal cracks in concrete. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this study, an advanced nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission model is developed for heavy-duty diesel trucks equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems. Traditional NOx emission models are limited by insufficient consideration of vehicle load and exhaust temperature parameters, leading to inaccuracies. This research addressed these gaps by incorporating exhaust temperature and vehicle dynamics into a sophisticated NOx conversion rate model alongside an exhaust temperature model that considers heat generation and dissipation relative to operational power. These combined models form a comprehensive NOx emission framework. Validated against traditional models, the proposed new approach significantly reduced NOx emission errors across various load states: no-load (5.4%), half-load (16.6%), and full-load (14.8%). This study also explored NOx emission characteristics under different load conditions, revealing key intersections and inverse correlations in emission factors at varying speeds. Overall, this study helps improve the accuracy of emission estimates and assists the development of improved environmental regulatory strategies. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Energy efficiency and driving factors of railway cold chain transportation in China

Due to the temperature control function, the unit energy consumption of cold chain transportation is more than that of ordinary transportation. Although rail transportation is known as an energy-efficient means, little attention has been given to the energy efficiency of railway cold chain transportation (RCCT). To address this gap, in this research, detailed waybill data for China’s railway cold-chain is applied. First, we investigate the RCCT market in China and provide an energy consumption calculation method for RCCT. Then, the provincial energy consumption and the efficiency of RCCT are compared based on a DEA-SBM model. Finally, the Tobit model is utilized to assess how various factors influence energy efficiency. The findings could provide support for energy-saving policy-making in the cold chain transportation sector at the national and regional level, which has been discussed in scenario analysis.

China is experiencing accelerated urbanisation,with a large number of people moving from rural to urban areas[1].It has resulted in large losses in the net primary production(NPP),biodiversity and carbon stocks and an increase in environmental pollution and CO_(2)emissions[2–4].In 2015,196 countries signed the Paris Agreement and committed to setting long-term goals to jointly manage climate change and reduce their individual emissions,aiming to control the increase in global average temperature from the pre-industrial level to below 2℃and to curtail the temperature rise within 1.5℃till the end of the 21st century[5].China is bolstering its efforts to achieve the climate change mitigation goals and has announced a plan for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060[6].The carbon neutrality goal poses a challenge to the current policies promoting rapid urbanisation across China.

Differences in single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors: considering temporal shifts and unobserved heterogeneity in prediction

Distraction and overspeed behaviors are acknowledged as two significant contributors to single-vehicle motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities resulting from which are severe and critical issues in Pakistan. To explore the temporal instability and differences in the factors determining the injury severities between single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors, this study estimated two groups of random parameter logit models with heterogeneity in means and variances. Single-vehicle motorcycle crash data in Rawalpindi city between 2017 and 2019 was used for model estimation, and a wide variety of explanatory variables relating to the rider, roadways, environments, and temporal attributes was simulated in the models. The current study considered three possible crash injury severity outcomes: minor injury, severe injury and fatal injury. Likelihood ratio tests were conducted to explore the temporal instability and non-transferability. Marginal effects were also calculated to further reveal temporal instability of the variables. Except for several variables, the most significant factors reported temporal instability and non-transferability, manifested as the effects varied from year to year and across different crashes. Moreover, out-of-sample prediction was also implemented to capture temporal instability and non-transferability between distraction and overspeed crash observations. The non-transferability between motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors provides insights into developing differentiated countermeasures and policies targeted at preventing and mitigating single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by the two risk-taking behaviors.

The Impact of Information on System Operations

The operating system is a complex system that includes supply and demand. Changes in external information have an impact on the operation of the system, especially on both supply and demand. This paper analyzes the supply and demand and establishes the nonlinear programming problem of system operation under the social optimal goal. With the increase of external information intervention, there will be more suitable travel fares for the demand side. However, the supply side's related operating indicators (for example, frequency, bus fleet, and vehicle capacity, etc.) have shown a trend of first increasing and then decreasing due to existing resource constraints. It can be seen that under the same information interference, there are differences in the law of change between the supply and demand sides. Besides, an example is used to verify the effectiveness of the model. Through the model and calculation examples, we can know that the supplier and the demander can meet their own needs under the social optimal goal. This provides certain theoretical support for future research information on system operation.
