Sketches have risen as promising solutions for frequency estimation, which is one of the most fundamental tasks in approximate data stream processing. In many scenarios, users have a strong demand to apply sketches under the expected error constraints. In this paper, we explore how to configure sketch parameters to satisfy user-defined error constraints. We propose SketchConf, an automatic sketch configuration framework, which efficiently generates memory-optimal configurations for the first time. We show that SketchConf can be applied to order-independent sketches, including CM, Count, Tower, and Nitro sketches. We further discuss how to deal with the unknown and changeable workloads when applying SketchConf to the real scenarios of streaming data processing. Experimental results show that SketchConf can be up to 715.51 times faster than the baseline algorithm, and the outputted configurations save up to 99.99% memory and achieve up to 27.44 times throughput, compared with the theory-based configurations. The code is open sourced at Github. © 2023 IEEE.

In the process of walking, pedestrians usually have a certain destination. However, the current velocity of the pedestrian is not constantly consistent with the destination. Thus the pedestrian needs to adjust the current velocity by changing lanes. In this study, based on different velocities of reaching the destination, the deviation coefficient is introduced to represent the deviation of the pedestrian's current velocity from the destination;It is also proposed that the pedestrian has inertia for adjustments of the current velocity and would tolerate a certain degree of deviation out of walking comfort. Thus the pedestrian's lane-changing action is transformed into a dynamic balance between maintaining the current velocity and adjusting the velocity for the destination. In the end, a velocity-based pedestrian lane-changing simulation model is proposed, and a single pedestrian walking scene is simulated to obtain the smooth walking trajectory, in which the phenomenon of hysteresis for lane-changing can be clearly observed. © 2023 SPIE.

The paper investigates the longitudinal control problem of a connected automated vehicle (CAV) platoon operating under the multiple-predecessor following (MPF) topology, while considering unreliable communication circumstances characterized by random packet loss and heterogeneous time-varying delay. To model random packet loss, a Bernoulli probabilistic distribution is employed, where the packet loss rate is influenced by the communication distance. A linear feedback controller is then developed to handle such packet loss and delay. The sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of the platoon controller are derived using linear matrix inequalities and a Lyapunov-based approach. The delay margin condition is obtained, which is associated with the packet loss rate and the number of consecutive packet losses. The string stability of the platoon with delay and packet loss is also analyzed by the transfer function. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed method approach effectively maintains the stability of the platoon in the presence of delay and packet loss.

To improve the lateral stability and accuracy of path tracking control for connected automated vehicle (CAV) at handling limit conditions, the paper develops a model predictive control (MPC) method ultizing a lateral stability envelope. Specifically, the lateral stability envelope for vehicle state variables (i.e., sideslip angle and yaw rate) is derived by analyzing dynamic changes in the limit slip angle of the front wheel. This envelope varies with the steering angle and is incorporated into the proposed MPC controller as a constraint, which can guarantee lateral stability at handling limits. To further enhance the tracking accuracy, a reference for the yaw rate is derived by backstepping control considering the lateral displacement error. This reference is formulated as the objective for the MPC controller to regulate tracking errors. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed controller can decrease the yaw rate and steering angle fluctuations in path tracking with low road adhesion compared with the nominal controller.

With the vigorous development of the integrated transportation network, the choice of passenger travel route is becoming more and more diversified. Therefore, it is important to build the integrated transportation network by establishing the cost function of valid travel route to measure the route that passengers may choose. Based on passenger travel demand, an optimization model of valid route selection for integrated transportation network was established based on generalized travel cost. According to the characteristics of the model, an improved BFS algorithm based on dynamic updating generalized cost function and determining valid travel route by key nodes was designed to solve the valid route. In the last decades, free-floating car sharing (FFCS) has become a fast-growing mode of mobility service and promoted in many cities across the world. While lots of researchers have paid increasing attention to FFCS in recent years, little is known regarding the characterization and evolution of FFCS in Chinese cities, where car sharing services are gaining more and more popularity. In this work, we focus on two Chinese cities: Chengdu and Changchun, both of which have witnessed the shutdown of FFCS service and its replacement with station-based car sharing (SBCS). We rebuild 743,796 trips using public data from the smartphone application of a car sharing service, then explore the characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of FFCS usage, and identify the differences compared to those in Europe and North America. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis of the service coverage, demand spatiotemporal distribution and usage patterns of car sharing services before and after the shutdown of FFCS. Results show that, the shutdown of FFCS did not cause a severe disruption to the car sharing service. Instead, the introduction of SBCS effectively inherited and accommodated the travel demand. This work underscores the importance of considering the unique characteristics of China’s FFCS services when develop operation strategies and demonstrates that a well-designed SBCS could emerge as a viable alternative. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The applications of mobile communication and automatic driving-related technologies in transportation have made a revolution for us in traffic information perception, vehicle cooperative control, and traffic management. Besides, the emergence and development of connected vehicles (CV) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) have gradually changed the traditional traffic flow into a mixed one. In order to investigate their influences and characteristics of mixed traffic flows, this paper constructs an analysis model to derive the linear stability condition of the mixed traffic flow with CV and CAV based on the simplified desired safety margin (SDSM) model. Several numerical experiments are conducted to analyze the string stability of homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic flow, respectively. The results reveal that the presence of CAV could contribute to improving the string stability as well as reducing rear-end crashes. The higher the penetration rate of CAV, the more stable the string. And the time delay in drivers and communications is not conducive to the string stability. Besides, it is also found that controllable vehicles show great potential in preventing shockwave formation and propagation, suggesting a new way in traffic flow management. © ASCE.

The rapid development of multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) has positioned visual storytelling as a crucial area in content creation. However, existing models often struggle to maintain temporal, spatial, and narrative coherence across image sequences and frequently lack the depth and engagement of human-authored stories. To address these challenges, we propose Story with Large Language and Vision Assistant (StoryLLaVA), a novel framework for enhancing visual storytelling. Our approach introduces a Topic-Driven Narrative Optimizer (TDNO) that improves both the training data and MLLM models by integrating image descriptions, topic generation, and GPT-4-based refinements. Furthermore, we employ a preference-based ranked story sampling method that aligns model outputs with human storytelling preferences through positive-negative pairing. These two phases of the framework differ in their training methods: the former uses supervised fine-tuning, while the latter incorporates reinforcement learning with positive and negative sample pairs. Experimental results demonstrate that StoryLLaVA outperforms current models in visual relevance, coherence, and fluency, with LLM-based evaluations confirming the generation of richer and more engaging narratives. Photon counting imaging detector based on microchannel plate (MCP) and position-sensitive anode readout has the ability to detect single photon, and has been widely used in space detection, high-energy physics and bioluminescence imaging. Traditionally, the detector consists of photocathode, electron multiplication part and position decoding part, in which position decoding is accomplished by position sensitive anode. The delay line anode not only has high spatial resolution and large detection area, but also has high count rate. Based on the principle of delay line decoding, an induction readout cross delay line anode (XDL) is designed and fabricated. And the performance of the detector is tested by using the experimental system. The results show that the width of XDL anode output pulse (FWHM) is about 4ns, the spatial resolution of the detector is better than 100μm, and the dark count rate is 2s). © 2025 SPIE.
