With the advantages of zero emission and comfortable riding experience, battery-electric buses (BEBs) are widely adopted in public transit agencies as a green alternative to conventional diesel buses. Battery swapping technology is an efficient and promising charging technology to address the issues of battery range anxiety and long battery charging time. This study developed a two-stage optimization model to optimize the single-line battery-electric bus scheduling problem considering battery swapping. At the first stage, a bi-objective integer programming model is established to determine the minimum BEB fleet size, together with the BEB-to-trip assignment and battery swapping schedule. At the second stage, an integer linear programming model is formulated to determine the required minimum number of batteries. An e-constraint method is designed to investigate the trade-off between the required minimum fleet size and the number of back-up batteries. Finally, a real-world case study of a BEB line in Chengdu, China, is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimization model and solution method. Sensitivity analyses are further conducted to understand the impacts of some key parameters, including battery capacity, number of trips, cycle time, and battery swapping time. The results show that battery capacity and cycle time have significant influences on BEB-to-trip assignment results and battery swapping schedule. © 2023 IEEE.

Associating genes with diseases is a fundamental challenge in human health with applications of understanding disease properties and developing precision medicine. Over the past decades, biomedical articles increase explosively, which contain a great number of gene-disease associations (GDAs). Association extraction requires annotated corpus of high accuracy, but manual labeling is time consuming and labor intensive. This paper proposes a distant supervision-based method, to automatically label corpus for GDAs extraction. Compared with the manually annotated gold corpus, the automatic labeled corpus has much larger scale and better quality. It improves the performance of state-of-the-art extraction models, with AUC of 0.96, and F1 of 90%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of automatic labeling GDAs in the field of precision medicine. We extracted GDAs using new corpora from 115,261 PubMed abstracts about 29 lung cancers, and finally discovered 296 new genes/proteins related to lung cancers. These findings indicate new directions for drug design. © 2019 IEEE.

Accurate, fine-grained monitoring and estimation of traffic pollution are essential for preventing people from the health issues caused by air pollution. In this paper, we illustrated the concept of conducting fine-grained spatial interpolation of near-road traffic pollution distribution with mobile monitoring data. Different spatial interpolation techniques, including Kriging, Natural Neighbor Tessellation (NNT), and Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) were compared. Results show NNT outperforms others especially in the cases of sparse data. This conclusion contributes to the monitoring and estimation of traffic pollution in smart cities. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Fine-grained monitoring methods such as mobile sensing and grid-based network provide an effective approach to describe the traffic pollution distribution in urban areas. However, how to optimize the monitoring performance is still a problem to be solved. Based on the field data, adopting Kennard-Stone (KS) algorithm, Kriging, Natural Neighbor Tessellation (NNT), and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), this paper further studies the scientific mobile monitoring sampling frequency and monitoring network placement strategy applied to infer the surrounding traffic pollution. Experimental results illustrated that different pollutants are specific to mobile sampling frequency and estimation method. For PM2.5, NNT performs better than Kriging and IDW. The accurate distribution pattern of PM2.5 can be inferred when the mobile sampling frequency is every 60 m a sample (RMSPE = 9.98%). For CO2, IDW reaches higher inferring quality, which basically gets access to the surrounding distribution pattern at a sampling frequency of every 10.59 m a sample (RMSPE = 14.63%). Meanwhile, the monitoring network placement strategy for different pollutants is consistent. A spatially uniform distribution strategy can preferably infer the surrounding traffic pollution distribution as fewer detectors are planned to be deployed in the region. The conclusions of this paper may provide guidance for fine-grained traffic pollution monitoring and facilitating strategies in preventing and controlling traffic pollution in smart cities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The nickel cobalt manganese ternary (NCM) cathode material is one of the important parts of power lithium battery. The NCM cathode material production process including the Li2CO3 preparation, precursor preparation and synthesis process of cathode materials is resource-and energy-intensive, thus it leads to relatively severe environment pollution. In this article, life cycle assessment of NCM cathode material production using coprecipitation method in China was conducted based on ReCiPe method. The environmental impacts of the main processes were calculated. The main factors and sources causing environmental pressure were identified. The results indicated that the precursor production contributed the most to environmental impacts in the NCM cathode material production. The energy consumption of the precursor production was 612MJ, accounting for 94.6% of the total energy consumption of NCM production. The environmental impacts of the CoSO4 production and NiSO4 production were the main contributors to that of the precursor production. The primary cobalt and nickel resources in China with lower grade and difficult mining led to the high energy consumption of these two kinds of raw materials. Therefore, the development and utilization of the secondary cobalt and nickel metals will be a great potential to reduce environmental impacts of NCM production. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

This paper aims at investigating whether volatility spillover effects exist among sub-segments in heavy truck trucking market of Southwest China based on trading data from online freight exchange (OFEX) platform, in which the sub-segments are classified by truck length, roughly as short bed sub-segment and long bed sub-segment. Model conditional correlations were modeled via the Multivariate Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (MGARCH) model in the paper, followed by the analysis of volatility spillovers between sub-segments. Firstly, a Student's t distribution based BEKK (Baba, Engle, Kraft and Kroner) model is applied to analyzing the persistence effect as well as the volatility spillovers between sub-segments. Secondly, the change of interdependence degree between abovementioned markers is evaluated via the constant and dynamic conditional correlation models. We observed the constant long-term cross-volatility within the short bed sub-segment while multiple dynamic one-way volatility transmissions are observed, from the long bed sub-segment to the short bed sub-segment. In addition, an indication weight based on estimations of dynamic conditional correlation model is proposed to help marketing researchers to determine the weights of indices components when constructing trucking index in the future. © 2020 IEEE.

Links in most real networks often change over time. Such temporality of links encodes the ordering and causality of interactions between nodes and has a profound effect on network dynamics and *** evidence has shown that the temporal nature of links in many real-world networks is not ***, it is challenging to predict temporal link patterns while considering the entanglement between topological and temporal link patterns. Here, we propose an entropy-rate-based framework, based on combined topological–temporal regularities, for quantifying the predictability of any temporal network. We apply our framework on various model networks, demonstrating that it indeed captures the intrinsic topological–temporal regularities whereas previous methods considered only temporal aspects. We also apply our framework on 18 real networks of different types and determine their predictability. Interestingly,we find that, for most real temporal networks, despite the greater complexity of predictability brought by the increase in dimension, the combined topological–temporal predictability is higher than the temporal predictability. Our results demonstrate the necessity for incorporating both temporal and topological aspects of networks in order to improve predictions of dynamical processes.

Batch is an important pattern in data streams, which refers to a group of identical items that arrive closely. We find that some special batches that arrive periodically are of great value. In this paper, we formally define a new pattern, namely periodic batches. A group of periodic batches refers to several batches of the same item, where these batches arrive periodically. Studying periodic batches is important in many applications, such as caches, financial markets, online advertisements, networks, etc. We propose a one-pass sketching algorithm, namely the HyperCalm sketch, which takes two phases to detect periodic batches in real time. In phase 1, we propose a time-aware Bloom filter, namely HyperBloomFilter (HyperBF), to detect the start of batches. In phase 2, we propose an enhanced top-k algorithm, called Calm Space-Saving (CalmSS), to report top-k periodic batches. We theoretically derive the error bounds for HyperBF and CalmSS. Extensive experiments show HyperCalm outperforms the strawman solutions 4× in term of average relative error and 13.2× in term of speed. We also apply HyperCalm to a cache system and integrate HyperCalm into Apache Flink. All related codes are open-sourced. © 2023 IEEE.
