Energy saving with node sleep and power control mechanisms for wireless sensor networks

Energy efficiency sleep scheduling in wireless sensor networks is one of the most crucial technologies. In this paper, we propose a simple and feasible synchronous node sleeping and waking mechanisms for small scale wireless sensor networks. Sensor nodes are divided into forwarding nodes and listening nodes. Beacon frame containing sleep command from the coordinator can be forwarded to listening nodes via forwarding nodes. All the nodes in the network can enter sleep at about the same time. Through such network synchronization mechanisms, we can realize synchronous sleep and wake of the entire network. Furthermore, a new power control scheme based on routing protocol （PCBRP） in the medium access control （MAC） layer is proposed. It operates with the help of routing protocol and calculates optimal transmission power according to the distance between neighbor nodes. A mapping table including optimal transmission power and node address is established during the route building procedure. The transmission power can be obtained by searching the table with the address of next-hop neighbor in subsequent data transmissions. The proposed mechanisms are implemented in sensor nodes and are evaluated in a test-bed. The analysis and evaluation based on the experimental results confirm that the proposed energy-saving mechanisms are feasible and effective.

A secure mapping solution in LISP networks

The Locator/ID Separation Protocol (LISP) has been widely recognized as a feasible solution to address routing scalability issues and to support host mobility. In the LISP network, when an Egress Tunnel Router (ETR) receives LISP-encapsulated packets from an Ingress Tunnel Router (ITR), it acquires new source identifier-to-locator mappings and stores them in its cache table. However, such a gleaning scheme introduces a security threat that malicious users can insert an amount of fake mappings to the cache, so the ETR has to send Map-Request messages to mapping servers (MSs), which adds excess signaling overhead and transmission delay. To address this issue, this paper proposes a secure mapping solution in LISP networks (LISP-SMS). The ETR can validate the source identifier-to-locator mapping using the MSs' public/private key without sending a Map-Request to the MSs. To evaluate the efficiency of LISP-SMS, we implement the modules of ITRs, ETRs and MSs. The evaluation results show that LISP-SMS can reduce the transmission delay. © 2012 Binary Information Press.

Further explore on performance of various traffic combination based on network calculus

The end-to-end transport principle has been one of the building blocks since the internet born. However, with the explosion of internet scale and various services, all of these pound on the poor scalability and strictness of the end-to-end model. With the internet switch from host-center network to services/information/content centric network. In this paper, we investigate the two traditional end-to-end transport protocols thoroughly as a guidance for designing an appropriate substitute transport principle for the new architecture. In detail, our work explores various network traffic combination performance from the perspective of the transport layer. Firstly, we model the end-to- end transport process and analyze the delivery possibility against the transmission attempts. Then, we deduce the servicecurve of the composite TCP and UDP traffic. Further, we simulate the topology taken from our campus network to evaluate the performance of two cases: 1. different traffic amount with the same traffic combination;2. various traffic combinations under the same traffic flow amount. The simulation results show that UDP take 30%-75% of the network traffic could benefit the throughput performance, which offers an indicator for adjusting the node traffic combination in order to improve the network performance. Moreover, we consider delay, packet drop rate and resource utilization efficiency. Based on all these, the composite traffic combination could be modified to ensure the quality of service more comprehensively. © 2013 engineering and Technology Publishing.

Content-centric networking: Effect of content caching on mitigating DoS attack

Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is a novel networking paradigm making named data the first class entity rather than IP address. That is, it cares about which data to fetch rather than which host to reach. One key feature of CCN is the content caching that CCN routers are caching named contents instead of IP addresses, which makes the effect of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack different from in TCP/IP networking. In this paper, we propose a DoS attack model for CCN. Comparing with TCP/IP networking, we use the model evaluations and NS2 simulations to show the effectiveness of CCN's content caching on limiting DoS attack. In addition, we analyze how the content caching Time-To-Live (TTL) in CCN affects DoS attack. Both the results show CCN has better survivability and resilience than TCP/IP networking when suffering DoS attack and larger content caching TTL brings in better DoS limiting effect. © 2012 International Journal of Computer Science Issues.

A Novel Location Management Scheme based on DNS in Proxy Mobile IPv6

Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) is designed to provide a network-based localized mobility management protocol, but it does not handle the global mobility of hosts. In this paper, we propose a location management scheme based on Domain Name System (DNS) for PMIPv6 which can support global mobility by using DNS as a location manager. In addition, to support large numbers of mobile terminals and enhance network scalability a paging extension scheme is introduced to PMIPv6. To evaluate the proposed location management scheme, we establish an analytical model, formulate the location update cost and the paging cost, and analyze the influence of the different factors on the total signaling cost. The performance results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the basic PMIPv6 under various parameters in terms of reducing the signaling overhead and the proposed scheme reduces signaling overhead compared to the basic PMIPv6.

Existing internet network infrastructure could dynamically select a path from the originating source to its ultimate destination without guarantees of quality of service,. Because the network infrastructure could not dynamically provide and adjust the necessary network resources according to the type of service, a service-aware routing network model is presented in this paper. This paper provides theoretical foundation and key technologies for the dynamic matching between service demand and network resource. The 2LPN-FI includes two layers, the logical service layer and physical network layer which both use a Petri net. This layer provides the mutual perception and mapping mechanism between service and network.

With the development of Mobile IPv6 and multicast technology, mobile multicast becomes a research hotspot. Based on two basic mobile multicast methods, the Bi-directional Tunnel (BT) method and the Remote Subscription (RS) method, some mobile multicast schemes have been proposed. However, most of them evaluate the performance by means of analysis and simulation, but lack of testing the performance in a real test-bed. So in this paper, we implemented several mobile multicast schemes and evaluated their performance in our test-bed. The experimental results show that (1) the mobility management protocols have an important impact on the BT-based methods;(2) the distribution of multicast delivery tree affects the performance of RS-based methods. © 2009 IEEE.

A novel data-oriented name service

The internet has evolved from its original design. (1)The user cares about what they are looking for, not which machine provides the data or the service. The host-to-host internet tends to become a data-oriented network. (2) In the pressures of commerce and security, the middleboxes, such as network address translators (NATs), firewalls and caching servers, become commonplace in current internet. They improve the performance of the applications and security, but also violate the internet layering and are difficult to maintain and configure. To adapt these changes, we proposed the novel Data-Oriented Name Service (DONS), which gives a clean-slate redesign of internet naming and name resolution. It achieves (1) permanence, getting the resource using the persistent name;(2) semantic-free, improving the flexibility and functionality of the network;(3) middlebox integration, allowing and facilitating the deployment of middleboxes;(4) self-certifying, authenticating the source. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

The new manufacturing production model puts forward the demand for the integration of industrial IT networks and OT networks. The proposal of TSN and DetNet standards makes it possible to converge IT and OT. In the future, TSN and DetNet will combine to become a new industrial network paradigm, making industrial heterogeneous networks a converged and interconnected IP-supporting network. Therefore, it is necessary to perform unified addressing on industrial heterogeneous networks to support indiscriminate addressing and communication between devices. Since DHCP is not suitable for industrial network scenarios, this paper proposes an IPv6 address assignment and management mechanism, which assigns specific IPv6 addresses to industrial network devices based on their characteristic information, and uses the NETCONF protocol to uniformly manage the configuration information during the address assignment process. The mechanism proposed in this paper assigns IPv6 addresses for industrial IP networks and non-IP networks uniformly, achieving IPv6-based undifferentiated addressing and laying a foundation for the seamless integration and fusion of industrial networks and the internet. © 2021 IEEE.
