Automatic Repeat Request Design in AoI-Aware Broadcast With Heterogeneous Direct and Relay-Assisted Users

This paper investigates the design of automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocols in age of information (AoI)-aware broadcast systems with heterogeneous users, including both direct and relay-assisted users. In this setup, a direct user receives status updates directly via a single-hop link, while a relay-assisted user can receive status updates through either a direct single-hop link or a two-hop relay-assisted link. While ARQ is commonly used to ensure reliable transmission in error-prone wireless networks, previous studies suggest that ARQ does not improve the average AoI in single-hop networks. However, its impact on AoI in systems with relays, particularly those involving heterogeneous users, remains unclear. We address this gap by analyzing the average AoI under different ARQ strategies, introducing a transmission limit k ≥ 0 at the relay. Here, k = 0, k = 1, and k > 1 correspond to non-relay, non-ARQ-at-relay, and truncated-ARQ-at-relay strategies, respectively. Utilizing a unified Markov chain framework that models the transmission processes for each user type, we derive the theoretical average AoI. Our results show that the direct user benefits most from non-relay and non-ARQ strategies, similar to single-hop systems. In contrast, the relay-assisted user achieves optimal performance with truncated-ARQ-at-relay, leveraging both direct and relay-assisted links. For the overall system, applying a non-ARQ-at-relay approach strikes a balance in AoI between the direct and relay-assisted users, leading to a more stable and lower system-wide average AoI. © 2014 IEEE.

A neural kernel framework for relation extraction

Relation extraction (RE) poses significant challenges due to the complexity of identifying semantic relationships between overlapping entity pairs within sentences. Traditional kernel-based methods effectively leverage instance-level similarities but heavily depend on manually designed kernel functions, requiring substantial domain expertise and limiting their flexibility. On the other hand, neural network approaches excel at automatically learning abstract feature representations but typically neglect critical instance-specific information, potentially missing valuable relational details during inference. These limitations motivate the exploration of a hybrid approach that effectively integrates the strengths of traditional kernels with the representational power of neural networks. In this paper, we propose a neural kernel framework designed to bridge this critical gap. The proposed framework employs neural kernels, whose parameters are initialized based on task-specific objectives and optimized through neural training procedures, enabling adaptive learning of similarity measures without relying on handcrafted kernel functions. By maintaining instance-level details through annotated training examples, neural kernels create discriminative, flexible decision boundaries tailored specifically to the relation extraction task. We further develop three complementary neural kernel components, instance kernel, description kernel, and cluster kernel, to show the advantages of kernel substitution. Extensive experiments on the ACE 2005, SemEval 2010, and CoNLL 2004 datasets demonstrate that our neural kernel framework significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving F1-scores of 88.11 %, 91.08 %, and 98.63 %, respectively. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Objective: Accurate decoding of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals has become more significant for the brain-computer interface (BCI). Specifically, motor imagery and motor execution (MI/ME) tasks enable the control of external devices by decoding EEG signals during imagined or real movements. However, accurately decoding MI/ME signals remains a challenge due to the limited utilization of temporal information and ineffective feature selection methods. Methods: This paper introduces DMSACNN, an end-to-end deep multiscale attention convolutional neural network for MI/ME-EEG decoding. DMSACNN incorporates a deep multiscale temporal feature extraction module to capture temporal features at various levels. These features are then processed by a spatial convolutional module to extract spatial features. Finally, a local and global feature fusion attention module is utilized to combine local and global information and extract the most discriminative spatiotemporal features. Main results: DMSACNN achieves impressive accuracies of 78.20%, 96.34% and 70.90% for hold-out analysis on the BCI-IV-2a, High Gamma and OpenBMI datasets, respectively, outperforming most of the state-of-the-art methods. Conclusion and significance: These results highlight the potential of DMSACNN in robust BCI applications. Our proposed method provides a valuable solution to improve the accuracy of the MI/ME-EEG decoding, which can pave the way for more efficient and reliable BCI systems. Research on the Effect of Surface Roughness of Molybdenum Shield on the Sapphire Crystal Growth

The temperature field determines the environment in which sapphire crystals are grown, and the molybdenum shield is one of the core components to maintain a stable temperature field. In production, it has been found that the appearance of the molybdenum shield surface changes as the use time increases. In this study, the surface roughness and reflectivity of old and new molybdenum shield samples were tested, and it was found that the surface roughness of the old molybdenum shield was larger and the reflectivity was lower, and the reflectivity of the molybdenum shield was negatively correlated with its surface roughness. Based on the test data, the sapphire crystal growth process was simulated numerically, and the crystal growth experiments were carried out using the old and new molybdenum shield respectively. The old molybdenum shield with low reflectivity would increase the power of the single crystal furnace, change the radial and axis temperature distribution of the temperature field, and make the crystal-melt growth interface too flat and the stress value too large, resulting in increasing the risk of cracking and bubbles in the crystal, leading to the degradation of crystal quality. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Fence Theorem: Towards Dual-Objective Semantic-Structure Isolation in Preprocessing Phase for 3D Anomaly Detection

3D anomaly detection (AD) is prominent but difficult due to lacking a unified theoretical foundation for preprocessing design. We establish the Fence Theorem, formalizing preprocessing as a dual-objective semantic isolator: (1) mitigating cross-semantic interference to the greatest extent feasible and (2) confining anomaly judgements to aligned semantic spaces wherever viable, thereby establishing intra-semantic comparability. Any preprocessing approach achieves this goal through a two-stage process of Semantic-Division and Spatial-Constraints stage. Through systematic deconstruction, we theoretically and experimentally subsume existing preprocessing methods under this theorem via tripartite evidence: qualitative analyses, quantitative studies, and mathematical proofs. Guided by the Fence Theorem, we implement Patch3D, consisting of Patch-Cutting and Patch-Matching modules, to segment semantic spaces and consolidate similar ones while independently modeling normal features within each space. Experiments on Anomaly-ShapeNet and Real3D-AD with different settings demonstrate that progressively finer-grained semantic alignment in preprocessing directly enhances point-level AD accuracy, providing inverse validation of the theorem’s causal logic. Fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) is a highly sensitive method for depicting the three-dimensional distribution of fluorescent targets within biological tissues. However, traditional FMT reconstruction can be affected by the severe photon scattering and the modeling errors of the photon propagation model, making it difficult to obtain accurate reconstruction results. Deep learning methods can directly learn the nonlinear mapping between the photon intensity on the surface and the internal light sources, providing a promising approach for addressing the inverse problem in FMT. Since the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700) fluorescence imaging has a higher tissue penetration depth and imaging contrast, this work constructs a deep learning model suitable for the fluorescence images in this spectrum. The model introduced in this study, akin to grasping the contextual nuances of word vectors in the domain of machine translation, endeavors to comprehend the process of photon transmission within biological tissues. Inspired by the transformer encoder, we proposed a network mainly consist of positional encoding, dual-head attention mechanism, residual connection, and fully connected layers. It has achieved significantly better results than comparative methods on the NIR-II dataset constructed by the Monte Carlo method. © 2025 SPIE.

Robust Indoor Person Re-Identification with Multimodal Training

Existing person re-identification (ReID) methods mainly rely on images and videos to match persons across cameras, yet visual data captured by cameras are vulnerable to environmental interferences (e.g. illumination and occlusion) or personal appearance changes, leading to performance degradation under such scenes. Meanwhile, the popularization of Wi-Fi networks has allowed probe requests to be captured for mobile sensing applications such as crowd counting and trajectory estimation. However, the MAC address randomization technique adopted by modern devices breaks the association of probe requests and adversely affects the functionality of these applications. In this paper, we propose MaRPA, the first multimodal training approach that incorporates both videos and Wi-Fi probe requests to simultaneously promote tasks of probe requests association and person ReID. MaRPA first distinguishes among pairwise probe request frames through a contrastive learning model. It then matches video and probe request sequences by exploring their similarities from the position and the vision aspects. Matched videos and probe requests provide complementary information and generate more robust features for both tasks. To evaluate MaRPA, we contribute a new dataset containing synchronous videos and probe requests data for probe requests association and person ReID. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. For probe requests association, it achieves > 85% discrimination accuracy and > 0.90 V-measure score;for person ReID, it achieves 75.8% mAP and 90.6% Rank-1, improving state-of-the-art video-based ReID methods by over 40% © 2014 IEEE.

Semi-Supervised Feature Selection With Multi-Scale Fuzzy Information Fusion: From Both Global and Local Perspectives

In reality, the laborious nature of label annotation leads to the widespread existence of limited labeled data. Moreover, multi-scale data have received widespread attention due to its rich knowledge representation. However, current research on multi-scale data primarily focuses on supervised learning environments, while semi-supervised feature selection for multi-scale data with limited labels remains inadequately explored. Meanwhile, existing studies on multi-scale data often emphasize selecting optimal scales and further conducting feature selection, but this strategy may result in losing potentially valuable information from other scales. To overcome these limitations, by adopting a multi-scale fuzzy information fusion mechanism, this article proposes two new semi-supervised feature selection approaches for multi-scale data with limited labels from both global and local perspectives. Initially, by fusing fuzzy information at various scales, a label learning method is proposed to convert the decision of missing labels into a fuzzy decision of label distribution. Subsequently, label-distributed multi-scale fuzzy global and local rough sets are constructed from global and local perspectives, respectively. Based on the two models, two semi-supervised feature selection algorithms are developed based on global and local multi-scale fuzzy information fusion. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to other advanced feature selection algorithms, the two proposed algorithms can effectively handle multi-scale data with limited labels and exhibit superior classification performance, computational efficiency and robustness. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

A weakly supervised pavement crack segmentation based on adversarial learning and transformers

While pixel-level crack segmentation has demonstrated significant potential in infrastructure inspections, its reliance on detailed annotations poses challenges for widespread adoption due to the time-consuming and expensive nature of such labeling. In response, weakly supervised crack segmentation has garnered attention as it eliminates the need for pixel-level annotations. However, existing methods, primarily based on class activation maps (CAM), involve complex training processes and suffer from poor performance due to misalignment between CAM-generated labels and the true target in the image. To address these challenges, we propose a weakly supervised approach for crack segmentation that simultaneously generates synthetic crack images and performs segmentation through adversarial learning. Unlike traditional methods that rely on coarse labels, our approach leverages synthetic crack images with corresponding labels, effectively eliminating issues of misalignment and noisy pseudo-labels. Our method introduces an encoder-decoder architecture for the segmentation model, incorporating a Transformer-based Feature Enhancement module (TFE) in the encoder. This module is specifically designed to capture long-range dependencies and efficiently integrate both high- and low-level features. Additionally, the model includes a Hilo block to extract both high- and low-frequency information from the images, along with a Progressive Shrinking Decoder (PSD) to aggregate and refine adjacent feature maps. Extensive experiments were conducted, and our model achieved an ODS of 67.12% on the CrackForest dataset, 60.11% on the Crack500 dataset, and 44.80% on the AEL dataset. These results demonstrate that our model outperforms several existing weakly supervised pavement segmentation methods across these datasets.

In recent years, research has illuminated the potency of implicit data processing in enhancing user preferences. Nevertheless, barriers remain in breaking through the constraints of implicit information. This study aims to bridge this gap by firstly constructing a triangular stable node network model, tailored to manage implicit information with precision. Recognizing the challenge of pinpointing novel structures within large-scale graphs, we propose SLTSNN-a triangular stable node network based on self-supervised learning for personalized prediction. SLTSNN innovates by maximizing mutual information between graph-level and patch-level representations, while augmenting graph representations through extended enhanced representations. Additionally, it incorporates triangular data associations and introduces a triangular allocation attention network, which emphasizes strongly correlated preference features among similar users. Furthermore, SLTSNN employs contrastive learning to maximize mutual information between graph vectors and hidden representations, distinguishing between high-order global and local representations. The model's effectiveness in enhancing user preferences and capturing new graph structures is evidenced by its performance on hit rate and normalized discounted cumulative gain metrics across three datasets. © 2025 IEEE.
