Sentence semantic matching is one of the fundamental tasks in natural language processing, which requires an agent to determine the semantic relation among input sentences. Recently, deep neural networks have achieved impressive performance in this area, especially BERT. Despite their effectiveness, most of these models treat output labels as meaningless one-hot vectors, underestimating the semantic information and guidance of relations that these labels reveal, especially for tasks with a small number of labels. To address this problem, we propose a Relation of Relation Learning Network (R2-Net) for sentence semantic matching. Specifically, we first employ BERT to encode the input sentences from a global perspective. Then a CNN-based encoder is designed to capture keywords and phrase information from a local perspective. To fully leverage labels for better relation information extraction, we introduce a self-supervised relation of relation classification task for guiding R2-Net to consider more about relations. Meanwhile, a triplet loss is employed to distinguish the intra-class and inter-class relations in a finer granularity. Empirical experiments on two sentence semantic matching tasks demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model. Introduction: To develop and validate a machine learning model based on dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for predicting cervical lymph node metastases (CLNM) in patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: This prospective single-center study enrolled patients with NPC and the study assessment included both DECT and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT). Radiomics features were extracted from each region of interest (ROI) for cervical lymph nodes using arterial and venous phase images at 100 keV and 150 keV, either individually as non-fusion models or combined as fusion models on the DECT images. The performance of the random forest (RF) models, combined with radiomics features, was evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis. DeLong's test was employed to compare model performances, while decision curve analysis (DCA) assessed the clinical utility of the predictive models. Results: Sixty-six patients with NPC were included for analysis, which was divided into a training set (n = 42) and a validation set (n = 22). A total of 13 radiomic models were constructed (4 non-fusion models and 9 fusion models). In the non-fusion models, when the threshold value exceeded 0.4, the venous phase at 100 keV (V100) (AUC, 0.9667;95 % confidence interval [95 % CI], 0.9363–0.9901) model exhibited a higher net benefit than other non-fusion models. The V100 + V150 fusion model achieved the best performance, with an AUC of 0.9697 (95 % CI, 0.9393–0.9907). Conclusion: DECT-based radiomics effectively diagnosed CLNM in patients with NPC and may potentially be a valuable tool for clinical decision-making. Implications for practice: This study improved pre-operative evaluation, treatment strategy selection, and prognostic evaluation for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma by combining DECT and radiomics to predict cervical lymph node status prior to treatment. © 2025 The Co

Model-assisted inference for covariate-specific treatment effects with high-dimensional data

Covariate-specific treatment effects (CSTEs) represent heterogeneous treatment effects across subpopulations defined by certain selected covariates. In this article, we consider marginal structural models where CSTEs are linearly represented using a set of basis functions of the selected covariates. We develop a new approach in high-dimensional settings to obtain not only doubly robust point estimators of CSTEs, but also model-assisted confidence intervals, which are valid when a propensity score model is correctly specified but an outcome regression model may be misspecified. With a linear outcome model and subpopulations defined by discrete covariates, both point estimators and confidence intervals are doubly robust for CSTEs. In contrast, confidence intervals from existing high-dimensional methods are valid only when both the propensity score and outcome models are correctly specified. We establish asymptotic properties of the proposed point estimators and the associated confidence intervals. A new characterization of balanced rotation symmetric（n, m）-functions is presented. Based on the characterization, the nonexistence of balanced rotation symmetric（pr, m）-functions is determined, where p is an odd prime and m ≥ 2. And there exist balanced rotation symmetric（2r, m）-functions for 2 ≤ m ≤ 2r-r. With the help of these results, we also prove that there exist rotation symmetric resilient（2r, m）-functions for 2 ≤ m ≤ 2r-r-1.

Personalizing search results using hierarchical RNN with query-aware attention

Search results personalization has become an effective way to improve the quality of search engines. Previous studies extracted information such as past clicks, user topical interests, query click entropy and so on to tailor the original ranking. However, few studies have taken into account the sequential information underlying previous queries and sessions. Intuitively, the order of issued queries is important in inferring the real user interests. And more recent sessions should provide more reliable personal signals than older sessions. In addition, the previous search history and user behaviors should influence the personalization of the current query depending on their relatedness. To implement these intuitions, in this paper we employ a hierarchical recurrent neural network to exploit such sequential information and automatically generate user profile from historical data. We propose a query-aware attention model to generate a dynamic user profile based on the input query. Significant improvement is observed in the experiment with data from a commercial search engine when compared with several traditional personalization models. Our analysis reveals that the attention model is able to attribute higher weights to more related past sessions after fine training. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Detecting suspected epidemic cases using trajectory big data

Emerging infectious diseases are existential threats to human health and global stability. The recent outbreaks of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 have rapidly formed a global pandemic, causing hundreds of thousands of infections and huge economic loss. The WHO declares that more precise measures to track, detect and isolate infected people are among the most effective means to quickly contain the outbreak. Based on trajectory provided by the big data and the mean field theory, we establish an aggregated risk mean field that contains information of all risk-spreading particles by proposing a spatio-temporal model named HiRES risk map. It has dynamic fine spatial resolution and high computation efficiency enabling fast update. We then propose an objective individual epidemic risk scoring model named HiRES-p based on HiRES risk maps, and use it to develop statistical inference and machine learning methods for detecting suspected epidemic-infected individuals. We conduct numerical experiments by applying the proposed methods to study the early outbreak of COVID-19 in China. Results show that the HiRES risk map has strong ability in capturing global trend and local variability of the epidemic risk, thus can be applied to monitor epidemic risk at country, province, city and community levels, as well as at specific high-risk locations such as hospital and station. HiRES-p score seems to be an effective measurement of personal epidemic risk. The accuracy of both detecting methods are above 90% when the population infection rate is under 20%, which indicates great application potential in epidemic risk prevention and control practice. Stencil is a basic building block widely used in many HPC areas and applications. It generally dominates the time cost and is critical to the overall performance. Given that heterogeneous many-core is frequently adopted to build super computers, porting and optimizing stencil codes on modern accelerator-based architectures is important. Porting is non-trivial, and optimization is more difficult as it requires better understanding of the underlying architecture. As a result, auto tuning targeting on accelerators such as GPU becomes a hot research topic. In this paper, we focus on tuning stencil automatically on SW26010, which is a heterogeneous many-core CPU equipped in Sunway TaihuLight SuperComputer, and mainly work on 2D stencil variants code in ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System). The code generator can generate codes running on slave cores for 50+ different FORTRAN stencil-alike loops in ROMS in seconds, and optimization methods are integrated into the generator as well. The performance is better than the directive based method (OpenACC) and the hand-drafted code by a junior programmer, and it is comparable compared with the code written by a senior programmer with several years of programming experience. © 2019 IEEE.

Multi-criteria group sorting (MCGS) that considers linguistic preferences involves multiple individuals evaluating alternatives and assigning them to pre-determined ordered categories based on specific criteria. Nevertheless, due to the limited availability of class information and the constrained cognitive capacity of decision-makers (DMs), it becomes challenging for DMs to furnish explicit preference information to reach consensus. Besides, decision parameters such as consensus threshold and class thresholds are also too hard to be assumed in advance. Therefore, this paper studies the preference disaggregation problem in MCGS, in which DMs are allowed to provide their pairwise comparisons in flexible linguistic expressions (FLEs) as preference information. To more fully utilize the preferences, semantic granulation is introduced. First, an individual consistency recognition model is proposed to identify inconsistent preferences and provide modification directions to the corresponding individuals. Next, semantic granulation and maximum entropy are combined into a granulation-driven information transformation model to convert the preference information based on FLEs into triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). Subsequently, in the consensus-driven preference disaggregation model, decision parameters and sorting results can be obtained at the premise of consensus by adjusting weights. Ultimately, to substantiate the effectiveness of the proposal, two numerical applications concerning the sorting of government venture capitals and information system suppliers are presented, along with comparative analysis, sensitivity analysis, and simulation analysis. © 2025 The Authors

Restricted by their energy storage mechanism,current energy storage devices have certain drawbacks,such as low power density for batteries and low energy density for ***,the nearest ion capacitors,such as lithium-ion and sodium-ion capacitors containing battery-type and capacitor-type electrodes,may allow achieving both high energy and power *** the inspiration,a new zinc-ion capacitor(ZIC)has been designed and realized by assembling the free-standing manganese dioxide-carbon nanotubes(MnO2-CNTs)battery-type cathode and MXene(Ti3C2Tx)capacitortype anode in an aqueous *** ZIC can avoid the insecurity issues that frequently occurred in lithium-ion and sodium-ion capacitors in organic *** expected,the ZIC in an aqueous liquid electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical performance(based on the total weight of cathode and anode),such as a high specific capacitance of 115.1 F g?1(1 mV s?1),high energy density of 98.6 Wh kg?1(77.5 W kg?1),high power density of 2480.6 W kg?1(29.7 Wh kg?1),and high capacitance retention of^83.6%of its initial capacitance(15,000 cycles).Even in an aqueous gel electrolyte,the ZIC also exhibits excellent *** work provides an essential strategy for designing next-generation high-performance energy storage devices.

In July 2023,the Center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 *** report summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the *** workshop participants discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data,social media,and wastewater *** advancements were noted in the development of predictive models,with examples from various countries showcasing the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in detecting and monitoring disease *** role of open collaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advocating for the continuation of such partnerships beyond the pandemic.A major gap identified was the absence of a common international framework for data sharing,which is crucial for global pandemic ***,the workshop underscored the need for robust,adaptable modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sources and collaboration across sectors,as key elements in enhancing future pandemic response and preparedness.
