Efficient integration of renewable power such as wind energy in electricity markets is among the highest priorities. However, the deterministic market designs may not effectively adapt to the uncertainty of renewable power. In this paper, we investigate a joint energy and frequency regulation market clearing considering wind power uncertainty. By introducing the chance-constrained market design, we propose a joint market-clearing strategy for both conventionally deterministic units and uncertain wind farms. By the simulation based on real market data, we show that as the confidence level increases, system stability improves, but this comes at the expense of increased wind abandonment losses and higher operating costs in the market. Simultaneously, a higher penetration of wind power leads to lower market operating costs and energy shadow prices.

Weakly-supervised action localization aims to recognize and localize action instancese in untrimmed videos with only video-level labels. Most existing models rely on multiple instance learning(MIL), where the predictions of unlabeled instances are supervised by classifying labeled bags. The MIL-based methods are relatively well studied with cogent performance achieved on classification but not on localization. Generally, they locate temporal regions by the video-level classification but overlook the temporal variations of feature semantics. To address this problem, we propose a novel attention-based hierarchically-structured latent model to learn the temporal variations of feature semantics. Specifically, our model entails two components, the first is an unsupervised change-points detection module that detects change-points by learning the latent representations of video features in a temporal hierarchy based on their rates of change, and the second is an attention-based classification model that selects the change-points of the foreground as the boundaries. To evaluate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets, THUMOS-14 and ActivityNet-v1.3. The experiments show that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods, and even achieves comparable performance with fully-supervised methods.

The next phase of LHC Operations-High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which is aimed at ten-fold increase in the luminosity of proton-proton collisions at the energy of 14 TeV, is expected to start operation in 2027-2028 and will deliver an unprecedented scientific data volume of multi-exabyte scale. This amount of data has to be stored and the corresponding storage system should ensure fast and reliable data delivery for processing by scientific groups distributed all over the world. The present LHC computing and data processing model will not be able to provide the required infrastructure growth even taking into account the expected hardware technology evolution. To address this challenge the new state-of-The-Art computing infrastructure technologies are now being developed and are presented here. The possibilities of application of the HL-LHC distributed data handling technique for other particle and astro-particle physics experiments dealing with large-scale data volumes like DUNE, LSST, Belle-II, JUNO, SKAO etc. are also discussed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Metriplectic systems are learned from data in a way that scales quadratically in both the size of the state and the rank of the metriplectic data. Besides being provably energy conserving and entropy stable, the proposed approach comes with approximation results demonstrating its ability to accurately learn metriplectic dynamics from data as well as an error estimate indicating its potential for generalization to unseen timescales when approximation error is low. Examples are provided which illustrate performance in the presence of both full state information as well as when entropic variables are unknown, confirming that the proposed approach exhibits superior accuracy and scalability without compromising on model expressivity. A sparse semismooth Newton based proximal majorization-minimization algorithm for nonconvex square-root-loss regression problem

In this paper, we consider high-dimensional nonconvex square-root-loss regression problems and introduce a proximal majorization-minimization (PMM) algorithm for solving these problems. Our key idea for making the proposed PMM to be efficient is to develop a sparse semismooth Newton method to solve the corresponding subproblems. By using the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property exhibited in the underlining problems, we prove that the PMM algorithm converges to a d-stationary point. We also analyze the oracle property of the initial subproblem used in our algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed PMM algorithm.

The concept of Digital Earth(DE)was formalized by Al Gore in *** that time the technologies needed for its implementation were in an embryonic stage and the concept was quite *** then digital technologies have progressed significantly and their speed and pervasiveness have generated and are still causing the digital transformation of our *** creates new opportunities and challenges for the realization of DE.‘What is DE today?’,‘What could DE be in the future?’,and‘What is needed to make DE a reality?’.To answer these questions it is necessary to examine DE considering all the technological,scientific,social,and economic aspects,but also bearing in mind the principles that inspired its *** understanding the lessons learned from the past,it becomes possible to identify the remaining scientific and technological challenges,and the actions needed to achieve the ultimate goal of a‘Digital Earth for all’.This article reviews the evolution of the DE vision and its multiple definitions,illustrates what has been achieved so far,explains the impact of digital transformation,illustrates the new vision,and concludes with possible future scenarios and recommended actions to facilitate full DE implementation.

A hybrid machine learning method is proposed for wildfire susceptibility mapping. For modeling a geographical information system (GIS) database including 11 influencing factors and 262 fire locations from 2013 to 2018 is used for developing an integrated multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The cat swarm optimization (CSO) algorithm tunes the parameters of the MARS in order to generate accurate susceptibility maps. From the Pearson correlation results, it is observed that land use, temperature, and slope angle have strong correlation with the fire severity. The results demonstrate that the prediction capability of the MARS-CSO model outperforms model tree, reduced error pruning tree and MARS. The resulting wildfire risk map using MARS-CSO reveals that 20% of the study areas is categorized in the very low wildfire risk class, whereas 40% is under the very high class of fire hazard. © 2023 The Author(s). In July 2023,the Center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 *** report summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the *** workshop participants discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data,social media,and wastewater *** advancements were noted in the development of predictive models,with examples from various countries showcasing the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in detecting and monitoring disease *** role of open collaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advocating for the continuation of such partnerships beyond the pandemic.A major gap identified was the absence of a common international framework for data sharing,which is crucial for global pandemic ***,the workshop underscored the need for robust,adaptable modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sources and collaboration across sectors,as key elements in enhancing future pandemic response and preparedness.
