A convolutional neural network-based diagnostic method using resting-state electroencephalograph signals for major depressive and bipolar disorders

Background: Early and accurate diagnosis of bipolar and major depressive disorders is important in clinical practice. However, no diagnostic biomarkers can discriminate bipolar from major depressive disorder with high accuracy at present. Methods: We propose a novel convolutional neural network architecture using multichannel raw resting-state electroencephalograph signals to differentiate bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder. This method has great potential in diagnosing mental disorders. In total, 101 patients with major depressive disorder, 82 patients with bipolar disorder, and 81 healthy controls were assessed. Clinical diagnosis was performed by psychiatrists based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition. Participants were instructed to fix their eyes on a cross on the monitor during the collection of resting-state electroencephalograph signals. Results: A classification mean accuracy of 96.88% was achieved using the resting-state electroencephalograph signals with the 10-fold cross-validation method. The results indicate that deep neural networks could learn efficient feature patterns automatically without manual feature selections. Both statistical analysis and feature visualization on different brain regions showed that the classification performance and the learned features of the proposed model were consistent with that obtained in neurobiological studies on bipolar and major depressive disorders. Conclusions: The combined use of deep neural networks and electroencephalograph signals is an effective approach for the computer-aided diagnosis of bipolar and major depressive disorders. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

A comprehensive comparison of the trends and drivers of global surface and canopy urban heat islands (termed Is and Ic trends, respectively) is critical for better designing urban heat mitigation strategies. However, such a global comparison remains largely absent. Using spatially continuous land surface temperatures and surface air temperatures (2003–2020), here we find that the magnitude of the global mean Is trend (0.19 ± 0.006°C/decade, mean ± SE) for 5,643 cities worldwide is nearly six-times the corresponding Ic trend (0.03 ± 0.002°C/decade) during the day, while the former (0.06 ± 0.004°C/decade) is double the latter (0.03 ± 0.002°C/decade) at night. Variable importance scores indicate that global daytime Is trend is slightly more controlled by surface property, while background climate plays a more dominant role in regulating global daytime Ic trend. At night, both global Is and Ic trends are mainly controlled by background climate. © 2023. The Authors.

With the support of Beidou terminal of short message service system, the space science satellite can transmit all-day data that are astronomical alert data such as gravitational waves and Gamma ray bursts and satellite telemetry parameters. Then Beidou message service system has become an important means for finding the space astronomical events quickly, planning the follow-up observation and monitoring the real-time health of satellite and payloads. Then the application fields of the Beidou system has expanded into space science observation and satellite emergency operation. The short message data receiving and processing in ground system has many features of near real-time and continuity which is different from the processing methods of satellite data transmitted by data channel and telemetry channel. And the multi-source satellite data of the telemetry parameters and the astronomical alert information from these three channels need to be integrated. So, the real-time processing system of satellite data based on Beidou short message transmission has great challenges. In this paper, we explored an organization method of Beidou short messages, and proposed a multi-source data fusion algorithm for the ground satellite data processing system. The data processing system with this method was designed and implemented. Applying to the ground system of the satellite named gravitational wave high-energy electromagnetic counterpart all-sky monitor, the performance analysis of improved system shows that the processing delay for important telemetry parameters and astronomical alert information is greatly shortened from average nine hours to several minutes. The Beidou short message service system shows great supports in real time observation of gamma ray bursts. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Resolving regional carbon budgets is critical for informing land-based mitigation policy. For nine regions covering nearly the whole globe, we collected inventory estimates of carbon-stock changes complemented by satellite estimates of biomass changes where inventory data are missing. The net land–atmospheric carbon exchange(NEE) was calculated by taking the sum of the carbon-stock change and lateral carbon fluxes from crop and wood trade, and riverine-carbon export to the ocean. Summing up NEE from all regions, we obtained a global ‘bottom-up’ NEE for net land anthropogenic CO2uptake of –2.2 ± 0.6 Pg C yr-1consistent with the independent top-down NEE from the global atmospheric carbon budget during 2000–2009. This estimate is so far the most comprehensive global bottom-up carbon budget accounting, which set up an important milestone for global carbon-cycle studies. By decomposing NEE into component fluxes, we found that global soil heterotrophic respiration amounts to a source of CO2of 39 Pg C yr-1with an interquartile of 33–46 Pg C yr-1—a much smaller portion of net primary productivity than previously reported.

Biofilms mediate crucial biochemical processes in aquatic ecosystems. It was hypothesized that eutrophication may promote the growth of biofilms, resulting in larger numbers of functional genes. However, the metabolic activity and the roles of biofilms in N cycling will be affected by ambient inorganic nitrogen availability, not by the abundance of functional genes. Biofilms were cultured either with replete inorganic nitrogen(N-rep) or without exogenous inorganic nitrogen supply(N-def) in a flow incubator, and the N-cycling gene abundances(nifH, N_2 fixation; amoA, ammonia oxidation, archaea and bacteria; nirS and nirK, denitrification) and enzyme activities(nitrogenase and nitrate reductase) were analyzed. The results showed that, comparing the N-def and N-rep biofilms, the former contained lower nifH gene abundance, but higher nitrogenase activity(NA), while the latter contained higher nifH gene abundance, but lower NA. Different patterns of NA diel variations corresponded to the dynamic microbial community composition and different stages of biofilm colonization. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria(AOB), detected only in N-def biofilms, were responsible for nitrification in biofilms. N-rep biofilms contained high nirS and nirK gene abundance and high denitrification enzyme activity, but N-def biofilms contained significantly lower denitrification gene abundance and activity. In general,the strong N_2 fixation in N-def biofilms and strong denitrification in N-rep biofilms assured the balance of aquatic ecosystems. The results suggested that evaluation of the functional processes of N cycling should not only focus on genetic potential, but also on the physiological activity of biofilms.

The transformation of mercury(Hg) in the environment plays a vital role in the cycling of Hg and its risk to the ecosystem and human health. Of particular importance are Hg oxidation/reduction and methylation/demethylation processes driven or mediated by the dynamics of light, microorganisms, and organic carbon, among others. Advances in understanding those Hg transformation processes determine our capacity of projecting and mitigating Hg risk. Here, we provide a critical analysis of major knowledge gaps in our understanding of Hg transformation in nature, with perspectives on approaches moving forward. Our analysis focuses on Hg transformation processes in the environment, as well as emerging methodology in exploring these processes. Future avenues for improving the understanding of Hg transformation processes to protect ecosystem and human health are also explored.

We propose a hardware/software co-design framework, which leverages hardware-aware quantization and a reconfigurable processor to improve the computational efficiency of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on tiny IoT devices based on reconfigurable platforms. Firstly, we proposed a multi-objective optimization value function that can weigh accuracy, the size of CNN models, and computational delay, to improve the efficiency of the mixed- precision quantization algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning. Secondly, we propose a reconfigurable CNN processor that can adapt to the computing characteristics of various quantized CNN models, as well as a reconfigurable computing array and an on-chip elastic buffer, to improve the performance and computing efficiency on edge equipment. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed co-design method through an extensive evaluation of the Ultra96-V2 platform. With respect to the well-known CNNs—VGG-16, ResNet-50, and MobileNet-V2, the experimental result shows that the throughput of 216.6 GOPS, 214.0 GOPS, and 53.6 GOPS, the computing efficiency of 0.63GOPS/DSP, 0.64GOPS/DSP, and 0.24 GOPS/DSP, respectively. In addition, achieving a better optimized trade-off between the computing efficiency and accuracy compared with the recently proposed CNN processor with fixed bit-width and mixed-precision.

Although rice cultivation is one of the most important agricultural sources of methane (CH4) and contributes ∼8% of total global anthropogenic emissions, large discrepancies remain among estimates of global CH4 emissions from rice cultivation (ranging from 18 to 115 Tg CH4 yr−1) due to a lack of observational constraints. The spatial distribution of paddy-rice emissions has been assessed at regional-to-global scales by bottom-up inventories and land surface models over coarse spatial resolution (e.g., > 0.5°) or spatial units (e.g., agro-ecological zones). However, high-resolution CH4 flux estimates capable of capturing the effects of local climate and management practices on emissions, as well as replicating in situ data, remain challenging to produce because of the scarcity of high-resolution maps of paddy-rice and insufficient understanding of CH4 predictors. Here, we combine paddy-rice methane-flux data from 23 global eddy covariance sites and MODIS remote sensing data with machine learning to 1) evaluate data-driven model performance and variable importance for predicting rice CH4 fluxes;and 2) produce gridded up-scaling estimates of rice CH4 emissions at 5000-m resolution across Monsoon Asia, where ∼87% of global rice area is cultivated and ∼ 90% of global rice production occurs. Our random-forest model achieved Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency values of 0.59 and 0.69 for 8-day CH4 fluxes and site mean CH4 fluxes respectively, with land surface temperature, biomass and water-availability-related indices as the most important predictors. We estimate the average annual (winter fallow season excluded) paddy rice CH4 emissions throughout Monsoon Asia to be 20.6 ± 1.1 Tg yr−1 for 2001–2015, which is at the lower range of previous inventory-based estimates (20–32 CH4 Tg yr−1). Our estimates also suggest that CH4 emissions from paddy rice in this region have been declining from 2007 through 2015 following declines in both paddy-rice growing area and emission rates per unit

Due to profound impact on climate and human health,air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil *** key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tackle the complex air quality problem is to characterize it in a comprehensive manner with a long-term ***,we describe a continuous and comprehensive observation station and its accompanying state-ofthe-art instrumentation that was established to investigate the complex urban atmospheric environment in a rapidly developing Chinese *** station,located in downtown Beijing,aims to study air quality by identifying the major atmospheric pollutants and key processes determining their formation and loss mechanisms.A few hundreds of parameters are continuously measured with the state-of-the-art instruments,including trace gas concentrations,aerosol particle size distributions,and mass concentrations,covering aerosol particle chemical composition from molecules to micrometer-sized aerosol *** produced long-term,comprehensive big data with around 1�10^(11)bytes per *** this paper,we provide an overview on the facilities of the station,the instrumentation used,the workflow of continuous observations and examples of results from 2018 to 2019 and a basis for establishing a modern long-term,comprehensive atmospheric urban observation station in other megacities.
