The introduction of intelligent interconnectivity between the physical and human worlds has attracted great attention for future sixth-generation (6G) networks, emphasizing massive capacity, ultra-low latency, and unparalleled reliability. Wireless distributed networks and multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), both of which have evolved from centralized paradigms, are two promising solutions for the great attention. Given their distinct capabilities, such as decentralization and collaborative mechanisms, integrating these two paradigms holds great promise for unleashing the full power of 6G, attracting significant research and development attention. This paper provides a comprehensive study on MARL-assisted wireless distributed networks for 6G. In particular, we introduce the basic mathematical background and evolution of wireless distributed networks and MARL, as well as demonstrate their interrelationships. Subsequently, we analyze different structures of wireless distributed networks from the perspectives of homogeneous and heterogeneous. Furthermore, we introduce the basic concepts of MARL and discuss two typical categories, including model-based and model-free. We then present critical challenges faced by MARL-assisted wireless distributed networks, providing important guidance and insights for actual implementation. We also explore an interplay between MARL-assisted wireless distributed networks and emerging techniques, such as information bottleneck and mirror learning, delivering in-depth analyses and application scenarios. Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, scienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

PANDA: Prompt Transfer Meets Knowledge Distillation for Efficient Model Adaptation

Prompt Transfer (PoT) is a recently-proposed approach to improve prompt-tuning, by initializing the target prompt with the existing prompt trained on similar source tasks. However, such a vanilla PoT approach usually achieves sub-optimal performance, as (i) the PoT is sensitive to the similarity of source-target pair and (ii) directly fine-tuning the prompt initialized with source prompt on target task might lead to forgetting of the useful general knowledge learned from source task. To tackle these issues, we propose a new metric to accurately predict the prompt transferability (regarding (i)), and a novel PoT approach (namely PANDA) that leverages the knowledge distillation technique to alleviate the knowledge forgetting effectively (regarding (ii)). Extensive and systematic experiments on 189 combinations of 21 source and 9 target datasets across 5 scales of PLMs demonstrate that: 1) our proposed metric works well to predict the prompt transferability;2) our PANDA consistently outperforms the vanilla PoT approach by 2.3% average score (up to 24.1%) among all tasks and model sizes;3) with our PANDA approach, prompt-tuning can achieve competitive and even better performance than model-tuning in various PLM scales scenarios. Two major fundus imaging types, conventional fundus (CF) imaging and ultrawidefield fundus (UF) imaging, are widely used in ophthalmology. In a typical clinical setting, both imaging methods are used simultaneously to diagnose diseases depending on the case. This study introduced an enhanced method of modality transformation to boost the diagnostic support capabilities of deep-learning models in ophthalmology. The method proposed in this study to translate UF images (UFIs) to CF images (CFIs) can replace the common clinical approach of both imaging methods, thereby reducing financial and temporal burdens on patients. This study learns and transforms the relationship between these modalities using UFI–CFI image pairs obtained from the same patient on the same day to minimize distorted information and accurately convert between different modalities. Our proposed model uses scale-aware registration and gradient-guided translation methods to align the UFI–CFI pairs, The generated CFIs not only enhance the quality of images and better represent the retinal area compared to existing methods but also effectively preserve the disease-related details in UFIs, aiding in the diagnosis. In addition, we optimize the image transformation performance, resulting in an 22% improvement in image quality assessment scales compared with previous methods. Furthermore, we acquired the observation that our results are nearly impossible to discern any differences between the real CFIs and the generated CFIs in the view of ophthalmologists. © 2024, The Authors. Internet of Things Driven Data Analytics (IoT-DA) has the potential to excel data-driven operationalisation of smart environments. However, limited research exists on how IoT-DA applications are designed, implemented, operationalised, and evolved in the context of software and system engineering life-cycle. This article empirically derives a framework that could be used to systematically investigate the role of software engineering (SE) processes and their underlying practices to engineer IoT-DA applications. First, using existing frameworks and taxonomies, we develop an evaluation framework to evaluate software processes, methods, and other artefacts of SE for IoT-DA. Secondly, we perform a systematic mapping study to qualitatively select 16 processes (from academic research and industrial solutions) of SE for IoT-DA. Thirdly, we apply our developed evaluation framework based on 17 distinct criterion (a.k.a. process activities) for fine-grained investigation of each of the 16 SE processes. Fourthly, we apply our proposed framework on a case study to demonstrate development of an IoT-DA healthcare application. Finally, we highlight key challenges, recommended practices, and the lessons learnt based on framework's support for process-centric software engineering of IoT-DA. Knowledge Graph is an important research field that involves the storage and management of knowledge, but the incompleteness and sparsity of Knowledge Graphs hinder their application in many fields. Knowledge Graph Reasoning aims to alleviate this problem by completing missing paths or identifying wrong paths between entities. Graph Convolution Network (GCN) based methods are one of the state-of-the-art approaches to this work. However, it is difficult to directly generalize to unknown nodes and utilizes valid information from the local neighborhood which results in poor flexibility and extensibility and will loss of important information. This paper presents EG-KGR, a plug-and-play knowledge reasoning model based on enhanced graph sampling and aggregate inductive learning algorithm to relieve the above problems and enhance existing GCN-based methods. Specifically, EG-KGR supports incremental characteristics, uses inductive learning to replace transductive learning, and designs random sampling and local information sampling optimization methods to improve the model's generalization ability, prediction accuracy, and running speed. Extensive experimental results show that our EG-KGR can achieve optimal results.

ImplantFormer: Vision Transformer based Implant Position Regression Using Dental CBCT Data

Implant prosthesis is the most appropriate treatment for dentition defect or dentition loss, which usually involves a surgical guide design process to decide the implant position. However, such design heavily relies on the subjective experiences of dentists. In this paper, a transformer-based Implant Position Regression Network, ImplantFormer, is proposed to automatically predict the implant position based on the oral CBCT data. We creatively propose to predict the implant position using the 2D axial view of the tooth crown area and fit a centerline of the implant to obtain the actual implant position at the tooth root. Convolutional stem and decoder are designed to coarsely extract image features before the operation of patch embedding and integrate multi-level feature maps for robust prediction, respectively. As both long-range relationship and local features are involved, our approach can better represent global information and achieves better location performance. Extensive experiments on a dental implant dataset through five-fold cross-validation demonstrated that the proposed ImplantFormer achieves superior performance than existing methods. QoS-aware based web service recommendation is one of the crucial solutions to help users find high-quality web services. To accurately predict the QoS values of candidate services, it is usually required to collect historical QoS data of users (QoS data for short). If these collected QoS data are improperly processed, QoS data privacy may be threatened. However, how to accurately predict the QoS values of candidate services while protecting QoS data privacy has not been well studied. In response to the situation, we propose a hybrid web service recommendation mechanism, which is divided into three parts. In the first part, the QoS data privacy preservation algorithm, which called DVO, is proposed based on keeping the cosine similarity of QoS data unchanged, that is, to realize the confusion of QoS data while ensuring the availability of QoS data remains unchanged. In the second part, a hybrid matrix factorization model based on location information and service features, which called LCLMF, is proposed to improve the accuracy of QoS values prediction. According to DVO and LCLMF, the DVO + LCLMF is designed in the third part, which can accurately predict QoS values while protecting QoS data privacy. The experimental results show that DVO + LCLMF can accurately predict the QoS values of candidate services on the basis of attaining QoS data privacy protection. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Finding the transient and steady state properties of open quantum systems is a central problem in various fields of quantum technologies. Here, we present a quantum-assisted algorithm to determine the steady states of open system dynamics. By reformulating the problem of finding the fixed point of Lindblad dynamics as a feasibility semidefinite program, we bypass several well-known issues with variational quantum approaches to solving for steady states. We demonstrate that our hybrid approach allows us to estimate the steady states of higher dimensional open quantum systems and discuss how our method can find multiple steady states for systems with symmetries.

The lightning talks at EduHPC provide an opportunity to share early results and insights on parallel and distributed computing (PDC) education and training efforts. The four lightning talks at EduHPC 2022 cover a range of topics in broadening PDC education: (i) curriculum development efforts for the European Masters in HPC program, (ii) bootcamps for CI professionals who support the running of AI workloads on HPC systems, (iii) a GPU programming course following the Carpentries model and (iv) peer-review assignments to help students write efficient parallel algorithms within sustainable software libraries.
