In the field of railway transportation, with the continuous improvement of train running speed and the continuous increase of operating mileage, it becomes particularly important to ensure the safety and integrity of small-Target infrastructure along the railway train. Although many small-Target detection methods have been proposed, the research on small-Target infrastructure detection along rail trains is very rare. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a small-Target infrastructure detection network with spatial tracking and multi-level feature extraction based on Yolov8n. The experimental results show that ST-YOLO has a 3.6% mAP improvement on the OSDaR23 dataset compared to the baseline Yolov8n, and shows significant advantages over other state-of-The-Art methods. © 2024 IEEE.

With the addition of UAVs, the perception and recognition of ground targets have also advanced significantly. UAV photography has gradually become an integral part of this field. Due to the flexibility and lightness of UAVs, they can freely adjust their height and angle. Moreover, multiple UAVs can perceive and recognize the same target from different directions, which has led to increased attention toward collaborative perception using multiple viewpoints of UAVs. Given the diverse image information captured by UAVs from various angles, heights, and environments, i.e., multi-scale conditions, this paper addresses the challenge of target detection by leveraging the Local Feature Matching with Transformer (LoFTR) approach. The paper also explains the process of coordinating transformations for different images captured by multiple UAVs to ensure data consistency and synergy. Finally, experimental validation using the VisDrone dataset demonstrates that the developed detection method can reliably and efficiently operate on targets at different angles and altitudes. © Beijing HIWING Scientific and Technological Information Institute 2024.

As a highly developed region, Guangdong province has substantial industrial emissions. Its subtropical monsoon climate, characterized by abundant hydrothermal conditions, contributes to a substantial biomass potential. The adoption of potential biomass-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, such as biochar, presents an opportunity to mitigate emissions and work towards carbon neutrality in the future. However, the current state of the land carbon balance and the CDR potential of biochar in Guangdong province remains unclear. We first calculated the land carbon balance based on inventory data. Then we estimated the CDR potential of biochar derived from agricultural residues, forestry residues, and bioenergy crops cultivated on marginal lands in Guangdong province using life cycle analysis (LCA). Results show that Guangdong province has not yet achieved carbon neutrality, with a net emission (carbon emissions remaining after offsetting by carbon sinks) of 925.63 Tg CO2e (CO2 equivalent, 1Tg = 106 t) in 2021. Emissions from energy consumption account for the highest proportion, contributing 83.8% of total emissions. In the highest biomass utilization scenario, the maximum CDR potential of biochar derived from all biomass types reaches 84.30 Tg CO2e yr-1, which could offset 9.11% of net carbon emissions in Guangdong province. Our findings provide crucial guidance for setting emission reduction targets and implementing effective mitigation strategies in Guangdong province under temperature warming. This paper studies the task assignment problem of a multi-robot system with complex constraints including the robot speed limit, the task execution time window constraints, the arrival time, the trip cost, and different priorities of the tasks. A new bidding function is then designed for each robot. Based on the k-means algorithm, a hierarchy-based extended consensus-based bundle algorithm (CBBA) is proposed to find the optimal solution for the task allocation problem. Finally, simulation examples are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed algorithm and comparisons with existing algorithms show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the task assignment time with guaranteed reward values. © 2022 IEEE.

Urban rail transit (URT) is vulnerable to natural disasters and social emergencies including fire, storm and epidemic (such as COVID-19), and real-time origin-destination (OD) flow prediction provides URT operators with important information to ensure the safety of URT system. However, hindered by the high dimensionality of OD flow and the lack of supportive information reflecting the real-time passenger flow changes, study in this area is at the beginning stage. A novel model consisting of two stages is proposed for OD flow prediction. The first stage predicts the inflows of all stations by Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) in real time, where the dimension is reduced compared with predicting OD flows directly. In the second stage, the notion of separation rate, namely, the proportion of inbound passengers bounding for another station, is estimated. Finally, The OD flow is predicted by multiplying the inflow and separation rate. Experiments based on Hangzhou Metro dataset show the proposed model outperforms the contrast model in weighted mean average error (WMAE) and weighted mean square error (WMSE). Results also suggest that the proposed prediction model performs better on weekdays than on weekends, and with greater accuracy on larger OD flows. © 2000-2011 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new variational Gaussian filtering approach for estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamic system. We first assume that the predictive distribution of the state is Gaussian and derive an iterative method for updating the state posterior in the natural parameter space through KullbackLeibler divergence minimization. The obtained update rule is the same as that of the conjugate-computation variational inference technique in Bayesian learning. The derivation here is simpler and more insightful. We then impose a Wishart prior on the inverse of the state prediction covariance to take into account the impact of approximating the state predictive distribution using a Gaussian density on the state posterior estimation. The prediction covariance is identified jointly with the state using variational inference and the established state posterior update rule to achieve the desired Gaussian filtering. Simulation study examines the performance of the proposed filtering framework in target tracking based on bearing and range measurements. © 2024 ISIF.

Directional Beamforming for High-Speed Railway Communications with Frequency Offset Precorrection

This paper considers a multi-antenna transmission strategy for high speed railway communications. In order to achieve better performance than conventional space-frequency block coding schemes, we propose a directional beamforming strategy for the High-speed railway (HSR) communication by exploiting some characteristic of the railway system including predetermined moving tracks and real-time positioning information. Moreover, for alleviating the effect of Doppler shift due to the moving train, a frequency offset precorrection method is also incorporated with direction beamforming. Theoretical Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the proposed beamforming scheme over traditional HSR communication schemes is also derived for illustrating the performance enhancement. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our proposed scheme even with some kind of imperfect position information available at the transmitter.

The quotient of two multivariate Gaussian densities can be written as an unnormalized Gaussian density, which has been applied in some recently developed multiple-model fixed-interval smoothing algorithms. However, this expression is invalid if instead of being positive definite, the covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density is indefinite (i.e., it has both positive and negative eigenvalues) or undefined (i.e., computing it requires inverting a singular matrix). This paper considers approximating the quotient of two Gaussian densities in this case using two different approaches to mitigate the caused numerical problems. The first approach directly replaces the indefinite covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density with a positive definite matrix nearest to it. The second approach computes the approximation through solving, using the natural gradient, an optimization problem with a Kullback-Leibler divergence-based cost function. This paper illustrates the application of the theoretical results by incorporating them into an existing smoothing method for jump Markov systems and utilizing the obtained smoothers to track a maneuvering target. © 2023 International Society of Information Fusion.

Inconel 718, a nickel-based superalloy, is widely used in the key parts of aero-engine owing to its high performance at elevated temperatures. Meanwhile, Inconel 718 is a typical difficult-to-cut material which is hard to obtain ideal surface integrity by conventional machining (CM). Laser-assisted machining (LAM) has a good potential to improve the machinability. In order to study the processing mechanism in the LAM of Inconel 718, the in-situ and ex-situ studies were presented in this paper. In the in-situ analysis, LAM and CM experiments were carried out based on in-situ observation and digital image correlation (DIC) technology. The Von Mises strain and equivalent plastic strain rate in the primary shear zone (PSZ) and cutting force were measured. According to the DIC results, under the experimental conditions of this paper, the average Von Mises strain and average equivalent plastic strain rate of PSZ in LAM increase by about 10% and 20% respectively due to the softening of Inconel 718 by laser heating, compared with CM. In-situ analysis shows that Inconel 718 in LAM is more prone to plastic flow, resulting in lower cutting forces. As for the ex-situ characterization, the surface roughness, residual stress and tool wear were measured. The measured results show that LAM can significantly reduce surface roughness and tool wear, and cause compressive residual stress on the machined surface. © 2022 The Authors.

Fire extinguisher testing is an important process to evaluate its quality prior to commercial use. Traditionally, human operators execute the testing process. However, long-term exposure to high temperatures might affect the physical health of the operators. Additionally, the light intensity of the heat source prevents the operators from getting close, which significantly reduces the testing efficiency. Therefore, automating fire extinguisher testing poses the demand for a dedicated mobile robot where the localization enabling path planning control exhibits the challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel kinematic model of a dedicated mobile robot using the three-Pixy2 sensor for tracking the predetermined path in automating the fire extinguisher testing process. These sensors are designed to detect the central point of a dark area that is distinct from the light background. The kinematic model is essential to employ the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to reduce the noisy data from the Pixy2 sensors. Consequently, the filtered data is then fed to the estimation algorithm to provide the position of the mobile robot. Finally, experiments were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model and estimation algorithm. The result proves that the EKF can smoothen the estimated position.
