Nowadays, many simulation environments not only can not reuse existing simulation models and tools, but also depend on operating systems and hardware platforms, and even more they lack the capability to execute over the Internet and the Web. The paper addresses these disadvantages by putting forward a prototype of a distributed simulation environment based on the Web (DSEW). It introduces both the technology of software components and the technology of integration with Java and CORBA, which enables portability, scalability, reusability, interoperability and visualization of the simulation application, and can also shorten the development period and communicate efficiently. © 2000 IEEE.

The Streamline Texture Synthesis (STS) method uses a different 1D texture to texture map each streamline and streamline textures are synthesized. The Enhanced STS (ESTS) adjusts the width of a streamline based on the critical point and maps several 1D textures to a streamline in order to accelerate computing. ESTS can also simulate animations and visualize 2D unsteady or 3D surface flows. The analyzed result proves that ESTS produces substantially better visual results and ESTS is fast enough to visualize vector field interactively. © 2000 IEEE.

In the process of developing distributed applications, system reliability, availability, openness, resource sharing and reusability, etc. are very complex and difficult to solve. Recent research into agent theory has demonstrated that agent-oriented technology may be effective in handling these problems. The paper first discusses the relationships of distributed systems from an agent viewpoint, then presents an agent framework based on distributed objects which could be used to construct enterprise distributed applications. To enhance the openness and resource sharing in distributed systems, an agent communication language-KQML is introduced and implemented in the framework.

LinuxDirector is a software tool that directs network connections to multiple servers that share their workload, which can be used to build highly scalable and highly available services. LinuxDirector extends the TCP/IP stack of the Linux kernel to support three IP load balancing techniques, which can make parallel services of different kinds of server clusters to appear as a service on a single IP address. Four scheduling algorithms have been implemented to assign connections to different servers, and a simple distributed lock manager is provided for applications on different servers to access shared data consistently. Scalability is achieved by transparently adding or removing a node in the cluster and high availability is provided by detecting node or daemon failures and reconfiguring the system appropriately. This paper describes the design and implementation of LinuxDirector and presents several of its features including scalability, high availability, connection affinity and icmp handling.

Recently Tao Guo (1999) proposed a stochastic search algorithm in his PhD thesis for solving function optimization problems. He combined the subspace search method (a general multi-parent recombination strategy) with the population hill-climbing method. The former keeps a global search for the overall situation, and the latter maintains the convergence of the algorithm. Guo's algorithm has many advantages, such as the simplicity of its structure, the high accuracy of its results, the wide range of its applications, and the robustness of its use. In this paper a preliminary theoretical analysis of the algorithm is given and some numerical experiments are performed using Guo's algorithm to demonstrate the theoretical results. Three asynchronous parallel algorithms with different granularities for MIMD machines are designed by parallelizing Guo's algorithm.

This paper describes an approach to the evolutionary modeling problem of ordinary differential equations including systems of ordinary differential equations and higher-order differential equations. Hybrid evolutionary modeling algorithms are presented to implement the automatic modeling of one- and multi-dimensional dynamic systems respectively. The main idea of the method is to embed a genetic algorithm in genetic programming where the latter is employed to discover and optimize the structure of a model, while the former is employed to optimize its parameters. A number of practical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. Experimental results show that the algorithm has some advantages over most available modeling methods.

Welcome to Zhangjiajie for the 3rd International Conference on Computer Network and Mobile Computing (ICCNMC 2005). We are currently witnessing a proliferation in mobile/wireless technologies and applications. However, these new technologies have ushered in unprecedented challenges for the research community across the range of networking, mobile computing, network security and wireless web applications, and optical network topics. ICCNMC 2005 was sponsored by the China Computer Federation, in cooperation with the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. The objective of this conference was to address and capture highly innovative and stateof-the-art research and work in the networks and mobile computing industries. ICCNMC 2005 allowed sharing of the underlying theories and applications, and the establishment of new and long-term collaborative channels aimed at developing innovative concepts and solutions geared to future markets. The highly positive response to ICCNMC 2001 and ICCNMC 2003, held in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively, encouraged us to continue this international event. In its third year, ICCNMC 2005 continued to provide a forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners from around the world to report on new advances in computer network and mobile computing, as well as to identify issues and directions for research and development in the new era of evolving technologies.
