The memory wall problem makes researches on memory hierarchy more and more important. And in these researches, software simulation plays a significant role. To model the real runtime environment, full system simulators have been widely used. However, researchers are often perplexed by the precise problem when they run a parallel program on a full system multi-core simulator, especially in multiple configurations. Because the influence arising from operating system and the relative execution speed of parallel threads often make the performance of target programs uncertain. To solve the precise problem, this paper proposes a single execution multi-configuration simulation framework (SEMCS). Then we design and implement a Simics module, called trans-multicast using the SEMCS framework. Finally, we test a benchmark from SPEComp2001 on a four core processor in three memory hierarchy configurations. And the result has verified the effectiveness of the SEMCS framework.

Building application level multicast (ALM) for media streaming, we had better keep the invariability of source to-end delay (S2EDelay) of any node on the tree, so as to avoid delay jitter problem. In this paper, we proposed an aggregation-based ALM architecture, which aggregates the unstable nodes within a local area into a relative stable aggregation node Anode, and then builds tree by Anodes. Anode shields node's dynamicity inside and behaves as a stable one outside. To build the architecture, we first proposed an Anode structure by n-dimension anti-cube, and proposed a distributed algorithm to bind the logic view and physical view of an Anode dynamically by the differentiation and assimilation operations, which maintain the integrality of the logic view while the physical view changes dynamically. Experiment results indicate that our algorithm can keep the S2EDelay invariability of the built ALM tree effectively.

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) based on feedback control mechanism. Besides handling a periodic tasks, our algorithm significantly reduces the energy consumption of periodic tasks and consequently the energy consumption of the whole task set. The results show that, comparing to on-line dynamic voltage scaling (the best algorithm to our knowledge), our approach improves the energy savings by 10% on most task sets tested and by 5% on average.

Multi-core architectures can deliver high processing power if the multiple levels of parallelism they expose are exploited. However, it is non-trivial to orchestrate the computational and memory resources allocation. Furthermore, when dealing with distributed memory architectures, data distribution adds another level of complexity. This paper presents a model-driven technique for mapping multi-task parallel programs onto multi-core platforms. The resource allocation configurations are expressed within a three-dimensional optimization space which affects task-level and data-level parallelism, and communication. Then, the performance of any valid parallelization scheme is estimated statically, taking into account both computation and communication costs. We prototyped our approach on the Cell BE with an image processing application. Experiments show that our model can correctly predict the overall performance and highlight the most efficient parallelization schemes.

The modeling and simulation on evacuation has recently become a topic of great interest. We present an agent-based model to construct crowd evacuations for emergency response from an area under an explosion. Various types of agents are designed as well as the interactions of them are concerned in contrast to traditional models in which the total populations are considered to be consisted of identical individuals and the interactions between them are omitted. Different cases are taken into account to test the effect of our model by iterative simulations. At last, plenty simulation results suggest several effective ways to minimize the harmful consequences of such life-threaten events.

A Hohlraum-like configuration is proposed for realizing a simple compact source for neutrons. A laser pulse enters a tiny thin-shelled hollow-sphere target through a small opening and is self-consistently trapped in the cavity. The electrons in the inner shell-wall region are expelled by the light pressure. The resulting space-charge field compresses the local ions into a thin layer that becomes strongly heated. An inward expansion of ions into the shell cavity then occurs, resulting in the formation at the cavity center of a hot spot of ions at high density and temperature, similar to that in inertial electrostatic confinement.

In CNFETs, the Drain Induced Barrier Lowing (DIBL) effect is still a primitive problem and open for further study. Based on a numerical model developed with the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) approach in real space, this paper studied the DIBL effect in Carbon Nanotube-FETs (CNFETs). Some interesting phenomena of the impact of DIBL on the energy band have been noticed. For example, the relationship between the degree of barrier lowing and the drain-source voltage is not linear but of a step-like quantization, and the energy band shape (gradient or aclinic) is closely related to Fermi-level. For the first time, a detailed explanation of the underlying physical mechanism of the observed DIBL effect is presented according to the electronic structure, the effective capacitance model and the quantum capacitance model of CNFETs. Then the correlation between DIBL effect and the insulator thickness, insulator dielectric constant, CNT diameter and channel length is studied. At the end, a conclusion is made by summarizing the differences between the DIBL effect in CNFETs and that in short channel MOSFETs, and several approaches is presented to reduce the leakage current resulting from the DIBL effect.

Several regular parallel trees have been proposed over the years to optimize logic depth, area, fan-out and interconnect count for logic circuits. In this paper, we propose a comparative study of different parallel prefix trees used in the design of a new end-around carry (EAC) adder targeting FPGA technology. This new adder is based on the fast 128-bit binary floating-point EAC adder which has been implemented in the IBM POWER6 microprocessor's fused multiply-add unit. The parallel prefix tree implemented on the IBM's EAC adder is a Kogge-Stone tree which has been chosen for its high performance and its low power consumption. Our comparative study highlights the main performance differences among fourteen different architecture configurations when targeting an FPGA EAC adder design. We focus on the area requirements and the critical path delay of these designs. Our experimental results show that there is one architecture configuration with the lower area requirement and the higher performance.

To conduct a systemic analysis of biological networks function distribution and function modules, we present a semiautomatic method to achieve independent and intact GO slim (InitGO) based on graph operations and GO hierarchy structure. Our method is packed into a user-friendly Cytoscape plugin named InitGO. The application of InitGO to yeast transcriptional factors regulatory network shows that the network has function modularity, offering evidence that our method is effective for defining function modules. InitGO plugin and source codes are available on request from the authors.

It has been reported that function implementations in biological systems, including transcriptional regulatory networks (TRN), show modular architecture. Analyzing functional modularity of biological networks can describe characteristics of function implementation and their "position" in biology systems from the systems perspective. Defining functional modules naturally, we bring up a novel measurement, cohesive degree (CD), to characterize the modularity. From this character, we know that not all of the corresponding modules of function annotations take on good modularity. Considering the ratio of the non-cohesive (zero-CD value) modules, TRN's functional modularity is also weaker than that of other biological network and integral ones. And, this is not caused by data integrity, but by the topology of itself. In fact, the modularity implementation of biological systems is mainly accomplished through the cooperation of several types of networks, not by TRN alonely.
