Deep convolutional autoencoder thermography for artwork defect detection

Infrared thermography is a cost-effective non-destructive evaluation technique that plays a critical role in extracting information about defects in cultural heritage such as works of art. However, in-depth studies on the internal structure of contemporary artworks using infrared thermography remain lacking, and therefore, a deep convolutional autoencoder thermography (DCAT) data analysis method is proposed for defect detection of contemporary artworks. In the proposed method, original data are enhanced by convolution to reduce the noise and inhomogeneous background in the original thermal images;subsequently, a deep autoencoder is used to extract nonlinear features from the enhanced thermographic data, and the results of the hidden layer are visualised. These visualised images highlight information regarding the internal structure and defects of the artwork. The case study on a handmade replica of Picasso’s ‘La Bouteille de Suze’, reproduced exactly as the original, has shown that DCAT significantly improved the accuracy of defect detection when compared with that of commonly used methods. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The absorption kinetic of CO2 into a novel non-aqueous mixture of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and piperazine was studied at atmospheric pressure. And the effects of AMP / PZ molar ratio, total concentration, absorption temperature, inlet flow rate were discussed, respectively. The results showed that the composite absorbent with AMP / PZ ratio of 6:4 had good effect on CO2 absorption at 293K. Unlike relevant reports at home and abroad, the solubility of CO2 into n-pentanol solution of AMP and PZ was calculated based on solution rule models and relevant data from Aspen Plus. The absorption kinetic of CO2 into non-aqueous composite absorbent was analyzed by a double stirred-cell absorber. It shows the enhancement factor increases with the increasing of total concentration but decrease with the increasing of absorption temperature. The absorption mechanism of CO2 in AMP-PZ-pentanol was determined to be the formation of carbamate by FT-IR, 13C NMR and XRD analysis. Based on the vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) theory, the reaction heat of CO2 into phase change absorbent was calculated to be 9.30 ***-1. The results show that the composite absorbent has a lower reaction heat than any single component in it. The desorption experiment of saturated solution shows that the composite absorbent can be completely regenerated in a short period of time, which meets the industrial requirements for CO2 absorbents and will provide a theoretical basis for the further industrial application of this type of absorbent. © 2024, The Authors. This study addresses linear attacks on remote state estimation within the context of a constrained alarm rate. Smart sensors, which are equipped with local Kalman filters, transmit innovations instead of raw measurements through a wireless communication network. This transmission is vulnerable to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. The aim of this research is to identify the optimal attack strategy that degrades the system performance while adhering to stealthiness constraints. A notable innovation of this paper is the direct association of the attack's stealthiness with the alarm rate, diverging from traditional approaches that rely on the covariance of the innovation or the Kullback-Leibler divergence, which are conventional metrics that have been extensively explored in previous studies. Our findings reveal that the optimal attack strategy exhibits some structural characteristics in systems of low dimensions. The performance of the proposed attack strategy is demonstrated through numerical examples. © 2024 IEEE.

GotFlow3D: Recurrent Graph Optimal Transport for Learning 3D Flow Motion in Particle Tracking

Flow visualization technologies such as particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) are broadly used in understanding the all-pervasiveness three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flow from nature and industrial processes. Despite the advances in 3D acquisition techniques, the developed motion estimation algorithms in particle tracking remain great challenges of large particle displacements, dense particle distributions and high computational cost. By introducing a novel deep neural network based on recurrent Graph Optimal Transport, called GotFlow3D, we present an end-to-end solution to learn the 3D fluid flow motion from double-frame particle sets. The proposed network constructs two graphs in the geometric and feature space and further enriches the original particle representations with the fused intrinsic and extrinsic features learnt from a graph neural network. The extracted deep features are subsequently utilized to make optimal transport plans indicating the correspondences of particle pairs, which are then iteratively and adaptively retrieved to guide the recurrent flow learning. Experimental evaluations, including assessments on numerical experiments and validations on real-world experiments, demonstrate that the proposed GotFlow3D achieves state-of-the-art performance against both recently-developed scene flow learners and particle tracking algorithms, with impressive accuracy, robustness and generalization ability, which can provide deeper insight into the complex dynamics of broad physical and biological systems. © 2022, CC BY.

Engineered probiotics can serve as therapeutics based on their ability of produce recombinant immune-stimulating *** this study,we built the recombinant Bacillus subtilis WB800 expressing antimicrobial peptide KR32(WB800-KR32)using genetic engineering methods and investigated its protective effects of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2(Nrf2)-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1(Keap1)pathway activation in intestinal oxidative disturbance induced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)K88 in weaned ***-eight weaned piglets were randomly distributed into four treatment groups with seven replicates fed with a basal *** feed of the control group(CON)was infused with normal sterilized saline;meanwhile,the ETEC,ETEC+WB800,and ETEC+WB800-KR32 groups were orally administered normal sterilized saline,5×10^(10)CFU(CFU:colony forming units)WB800,and 5×10^(10)CFU WB800-KR32,respectively,on Days 1-14 and all infused with ETEC K881×10^(10)CFU on Days *** results showed that pretreatment with WB800-KR32 attenuated ETEC-induced intestinal disturbance,improved the mucosal activity of antioxidant enzyme(catalase(CAT),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and glutathione peroxidase(GPx))and decreased the content of malondialdehyde(MDA).More importantly,WB800-KR32 downregulated genes involved in antioxidant defense(GPx and SOD1).Interestingly,WB800-KR32 upregulated the protein expression of Nrf2 and downregulated the protein expression of Keap1 in the ***800-KR32 markedly changed the richness estimators(Ace and Chao)of gut microbiota and increased the abundance of Eubacterium_rectale_ATCC_33656 in the *** results suggested that WB800-KR32 may alleviate ETEC-induced intestinal oxidative injury through the Nrf2-Keap1 pathway,providing a new perspective for WB800-KR32 as potential therapeutics to regulate intestinal oxidative disturbance in ETEC K88 infection.

The control objective of Pendubot is to stabilise the system in a vertically upward position by swinging up from a vertically downward position. Facing various physical constraints in practical applications, this paper proposes a swing-up stabil-isation control strategy based on a nonlinear model prediction method to accomplish the above control objective. On the basis of the system dynamics model, the forward Euler method is used to construct a nonlinear prediction model of the system. According to the control objectives and physical constraints of the system, the performance index function is designed, and then the control inputs of each sampling cycle are obtained through rolling optimisation and feedback correction, so that the system state gradually converges to the target trajectory, thus achieving the motion control objective. Based on the simulation results, it can be seen that the strategy proposed in this paper is efficient and robust under external disturbances. © 2023 IEEE.

The activated sludge method is widely used for the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater, which gives rise to the problem of toxic residual sludge accumulation. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a typical phytohormone, facilitates the microalgal resistance to toxic inhibition while promoting biomass accumulation. In this study, Chlorococcum humicola (C. humicola) was cultured in toxic sludge extract and different concentrations of IAA were used to regulate its physiological properties and enrichment of high value-added products. Ultimately, proteomics analysis was used to reveal the response mechanism of C. humicola to exogenous IAA. The results showed that the IAA concentration of 5 × 10−6 mol/L (M) was most beneficial for C. humicola to cope with the toxic stress in the sludge extract medium, to promote the activity of rubisco enzyme, to enhance the efficiency of photosynthesis, and, finally, to accumulate protein as a percentage of specific dry weight 1.57 times more than that of the control group. Exogenous IAA altered the relative abundance of various amino acids in C. humicola cells, and proteomic analyses showed that exogenous IAA stimulated the algal cells to produce more indole-3-glycerol phosphate (IGP), indole, and serine by up-regulating the enzymes. These precursors are converted to tryptophan under the regulation of tryptophan synthase (A0A383V983), and tryptophan can be metabolized to endogenous IAA to promote the growth of C. humicola. These findings have important implications for the treatment of toxic residual sludge while enriching for high-value amino acids. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

In the space environment, the heat dissipation of spacecraft primarily relies on thermal radiation. To reduce the weight of spacecraft, it is necessary to replace the existing copper radiators with aluminum ones. However, aluminum radiators have a lower emissivity, which results in suboptimal heat dissipation performance. Therefore, enhancing the emissivity of aluminum radiators is crucial for improving their heat dissipation performance. This study investigates the rapid (100 s) reduction of graphene oxide (GO) into low-defect reduced graphene oxide (mRGO) using Joule heating for 100 seconds, followed by non-covalent modification to further enhance its dispersion in water. By incorporating modified reduced graphene oxide (mRGO) as the primary filler in an aqueous epoxy resin emulsion and using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to enhance the adhesion between the coating and the aluminum substrate, a composite Graphene/Epoxy radiation heat dissipation coating (GERC) with high emissivity and strong adhesion was successfully prepared. Experimental results demonstrate that the coating containing 4 wt% mRGO filler exhibits the optimal heat dissipation efficiency (24.15%) and significantly enhances the infrared emissivity of the substrate (up to 0.93). This coating exhibits excellent thermal stability and strong adhesion, providing a novel approach for thermal management in space radiators. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.
